Royston pays tribute to much-loved ice cream man who died
Tributes have been paid to a much-loved ice cream man who has died. The family of Gerry the Ice Cream Man, who worked across Royston, Hertfordshire, since the 1980s, said he "truly was an amazing man". They said the husband, dad, grandfather and friend "will be greatly missed by so many". Royston In Blue, who organise an annual charity 5k fun run and walk in the town, said it was "deeply saddened" by the news as Gerry had donated to it for many years.
It said it would celebrate his life at this year's event on Sunday: "Gerry has supported Royston In Blue for many years and always given a donation from his takings on the day."We have decided as the event is heavily supported by children, instead of having a minutes silence we will celebrate his life by clapping and celebrate his involvement in the community on the day."Luke Haugh, the town's mayor, said: "He has spent many years supporting local events, charities, as well as bringing joy to the residents. "He was a good man, friendly and helpful, and our thoughts are with his friends and family in this hard time."
'A symbol of joy'
More than 600 people commented on his social media page. David Archibald, from the town, said Gerry was "an icon of Royston". Another tribute said he "wasn't just someone who sold ice creams, he was a symbol of joy, consistency, and our community", who "brought magic to our Royston streets". Others described him as "the closest thing to royalty we had in Royston" and "a Royston treasure" who was "a huge loss to the town".

'He has delivered great audiences and the first ever Bafta for Breakfast. 'He can be brash and opinionated but works so hard for his team and allows people to flourish.' Another said: 'Yes, he is old-school and can rub people up the wrong way but it's always in the pursuit of great television. 'It's the best-rating breakfast show in the country - it's not supposed to be a walk in the park. 'Some - Naga included - need to understand this. It feels like it's a case of presenter power turfing out a brilliant journalist.' LEGENDARY actress Anita Dobson has revealed that she's landed a major new Channel 5 role. The actress, best known for portraying Angie Watts in EastEnders, confirmed to The Sun that she had landed a part in Channel 5 's a Play for Today. 3 3 Anita, 76, revealed all on her new acting role on the red carpet of the TRIC Awards. Speaking to The Sun, Anita said: "I'm doing a Play for Today for Channel 5 and that starts next week. "I am very scared! "I just want to get it right - I care about it a lot!" Her brand new role comes after she surprised fans earlier this year with a shock EastEnders return. She took on the role of Angie one last time as part of the programme's 40th anniversary special week. The last time she had been seen on-screen was in 1988 before she was later killed off off-screen. She recently admitted to The Sun at the British Soap Awards that her EastEnders return took a lot of persuasion. Anita told us last month: "It took a lot of talking because I wanted it to be right and I didn't want to do it if it wasn't going to actually work.
