A new study suggests an individual's personality type could influence their preferred type of exercise.
Researchers believe this link could help those struggling to make lasting changes find something they enjoy.
The study involved experts from University College London (UCL) giving 132 volunteers either an eight-week cycling and strength training plan or telling them to rest.
Prior to the research, strength levels were evaluated using exercises like press-ups and cycling tests, with stress levels measured on a one to 10 scale.
Researchers used the Big 5 personality test to assess dominant personality traits using five distinct groups.
These are extroversion, or how energetic and outgoing a person is, agreeableness, which includes attributes related to trust and compassion, conscientiousness, which reflects traits like orderliness and and reliability.
The other two traits are neuroticism, which measures emotional stability and the tendency for anxiety or mood swings, and openness, which describes a person's willingness to try new experiences.
Dr Flaminia Ronca, of UCL's Surgery and Interventional Science and the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health (ISEH), said the team found 'some clear links between personality traits and the type of exercise the participants enjoyed most, which I think is important because we could potentially use this knowledge to tailor physical activity recommendations to the individual – and hopefully help them to become and remain more active.'
Of the group, some 86 people completed the programme.
Researchers found extroverts tended to enjoy high-intensity workouts, such as high intensity interval training (HIIT).
Elsewhere, those with strong neuroticism traits preferred bursts of activity over prolonged intensity.
They also preferred not being monitored or recording their heart rate during the study, which researchers suggest could indicate they prefer being given space and independence while exercising.
'We know that the global population is becoming increasingly sedentary,' Dr Ronca said.
'You often hear about people trying to become more active, but struggling to make lasting changes.
'In this study, we wanted to understand how personality can influence this to support the development of effective interventions for changes in health behaviour.'
Professor Paul Burgess, from the UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, said, 'people who scored more highly in the neuroticism personality trait showed a particularly strong reduction in stress when they undertook the fitness training recommended in the study.
'This suggests that there may be particular benefits in stress reduction for those with this trait.'

"A large number of medications interact with grapefruit and grapefruit juice," Dr. Jared L. Ross, DO, a board-certified emergency physician and assistant professor at the University of Missouri, tells Parade. "Furanocoumarins are a substance that occurs in certain plants and fruits, including Seville oranges, pomelos, limes and even fresh parsley." However, he says, the highest concentrations are in grapefruit, specifically grapefruit juice. "Furanocoumarins inhibit cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4), an important enzyme found in the liver and small intestine. Many medications are either metabolically activated (from an inactive form) or inactivated by CYP3A4. This can make the medication ineffective or, more seriously, can prevent the body from breaking it down, leading to toxic effects." Instead of getting a regular dose, your body is getting a higher dose than intended." Doctors we spoke with pointed to the following drugs as having negative interactions with grapefruit: Statins, which are prescribed to lower cholesterol levels (simvastatin, lovastatin and atorvastatin) Calcium channel blockers for blood pressure management (like felodipine and nifedipine) Cyclosporine, an immunosuppressant Amiodarone, a medication to treat heart arrhythmias Some benzodiazepine medications used to treat anxiety and insomnia Certain antihistamines Related: According to Dr. Downey and Dr. Ross, eating grapefruit while on statins may pose the most serious side effects, including muscle breakdown, very low blood pressure and irregular heart rhythms. OK, but what if you really like grapefruit? Don't worry, you may have options! "The American Heart Association recommends against drinking grapefruit juice if you are taking a statin medication," Dr. Ross tells us. "However, it may still be okay to have half a grapefruit a few days a week in the morning if you're taking a statin medication in the evening. "If you frequently consume grapefruit, consider asking your doctor about alternative medications," Dr. Ross adds. "If you are on a statin medication for high cholesterol, atorvastatin may have less of an interaction with furanocoumarins than other similar medications. For most other conditions, there are other medications that you can consider with your doctor." Related: Dr. Downey notes that in terms of statins, "Pravastatin and rosuvastatin are safer options for cholesterol management if grapefruit is non-negotiable." If you accidentally consume grapefruit or drink a small amount of grapefruit juice while on statins or other medications it interacts with, don't panic, but also don't ignore what your body may be telling you. "If you accidentally eat grapefruit or drink a small amount of grapefruit juice, it is unlikely to have any significant effects on you. However, monitor to make sure you are not experiencing muscle pain, being overly sedated or having a low heart rate and low blood pressure," Dr. Ross advises. "If you experience symptoms, seek medical attention." Dr. Downey concurs, explaining, "If someone accidentally eats grapefruit while on one of these meds they should call their pharmacist or doctor, especially if they are feeling unwell. A child has reportedly died in Liverpool after contracting measles, prompting renewed calls for parents to vaccinate their children. The Sunday Times reported that the child was ill with measles and other health problems and was receiving treatment at Alder Hey Children's Hospital. The hospital released a statement voicing concerns about a growing number of children and young people contracting measles, which is highly contagious and can cause serious health issues. While it said it will not comment on individual cases, the Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust said: 'We are concerned about the increasing number of children and young people who are contracting measles. Measles is a highly contagious viral illness which can cause children to be seriously unwell, requiring hospital treatment, and in rare cases, death. 'The number of children being treated at Alder Hey for effects and complications of measles is increasing (we have treated 17 since June)." It added: 'We can prevent people, including children, from contracting measles through vaccination. Please protect yourself and vulnerable children and young people by ensuring you are fully vaccinated.' Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander also encouraged parents to take up any offer of the MMR vaccine in order to prevent children from contracting measles. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), measles is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus. It spreads easily when an infected person breathes, coughs or sneezes and can affect anyone, but is most common in children. It can cause serious problems in some people, and even death. Measles infects the respiratory tract and then spreads throughout the body. According to the NHS website, it usually starts with cold-like symptoms, followed by a rash a few days later. Initial symptoms include: a high temperature; a runny or blocked nose; sneezing; a cough and red, sore, watery eyes. Some people might also get small white spots inside the cheeks and on the back of the lips. A rash usually appears a few days later, starting on the face and behind the ears before spreading to the rest of the body. The WHO said rash begins about seven to 18 days after exposure, usually on the face and upper neck, spreafing over about three days, eventually to the hands and feet, and usually lasting five to six days before fading. The spots of the measles rash are sometimes raised and join together to form blotchy patches, the NHS says, and are not usually itchy. NHS advice is to make and urgent GP appointment or call 111 if you think you have measles. It adds to call your GP surgery before you go in as measles can spread easily and they may suggest talking over the phone. People are also advised to stay off nursery, school or work for at least four days from when the rash first appears, and to try to avoid close contact with babies and anyone who is pregnant or has a weakened immune system. The NHS says symptoms usually start to get better in about a week, and while there is no specific antiviral treatment, there are things you can do to help ease the symptoms and reduce the risk of spreading the infection. These include: resting and drinking plenty of fluids; taking paracetamol or ibuprofen for a high temperature; and using cotton wool soaked in warm water to gently remove any crusts from eyes. Measles can lead to complications if it spreads to other parts of the body such as the lungs or brain, the NHS advises. Complications - which are rare but can be more of a risk for people such as babies and those with weakened immune systems - can include: pneumonia, meningitis, blindness or seizures. If someone gets measles when they are pregnant, it can also harm their baby and potentially cause miscarriage or stillbirth, premature birth or a baby having a low birthweight. Alder Hey's statement comes amid an ongoing debate around vaccination, with a Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) report earlier this month saying that uptake of vaccines in the UK has stalled over the last decade, and is declining in many cases. The report said that no routine childhood vaccination had met the target for 95% coverage since 2021, putting children at risk of catching illnesses such as measles, meningitis and whooping cough. Experts have also voiced concerns around vaccine take-up, with Professor Helen Bedford, professor of children's health at UCL (University College London), telling PA Media: 'It is hugely concerning but not at all surprising that we are continuing to see outbreaks of measles, with very sadly news that a child in Merseyside has died from the infection. 'To stop outbreaks of this highly infectious disease we need to have sustained 95% uptake of two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine, but uptake has been lower than this for some years. 'In England only 84% of five-year-old children have had the two doses and in some parts of the country, including Liverpool and parts of London, uptake is much lower.' Dr David Elliman, honorary senior associate professor at the same university, said uptake of MMR vaccine had been falling around the world and in the USA there had been three deaths in the current outbreak. According to the WHO, in 2023 74% of children received both doses of the measles vaccine, and about 83% of the world's children received one dose of measles vaccine by their first birthday. Two doses of the vaccine are recommended to ensure immunity and prevent outbreaks. It said around 22 million infants missed at least one dose of measles vaccine through routine vaccination in 2023. It's never too late to start exercising, according to a new study that found people who transition from inactive to active lifestyles in adulthood can reduce their mortality risks by 22 per cent. Health experts, scientists, and medical organisations agree that physical activity benefits both the body and the mind. What has been less clear is exactly how much exercise helps, which patterns of activity are most effective, and at which stages of life they are most important. The new study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine (BJSM) aimed to answer those questions by identifying how physical activity during adulthood can influence the risk of dying from heart disease, cancer, and other health issues. Researchers analysed data from 85 studies of varying size. The number of participants per study ranged from 357 to over 6.5 million participants. Overall, the analysis found that exercising in adulthood can yield significant health benefits, reducing the risk of mortality by 20 per cent to 40 per cent. Specifically, adults who are regularly active can curb these risks by up to 30 per cent to 40 per cent. And even those who transition from an inactive to an active lifestyle can reduce their risk of death from any cause by approximately 22 per cent. Exercise does not appear to reduce all health risks equally. For example, it was tied to a 30 per cent to 40 per cent lower risk of death from heart disease, but the links to cancer mortality were less clear. Interestingly, not all types of exercise had the same effect on adults' health. The paper suggests that adults who work out in their spare time can reduce their health risks more than people who are active by happenstance at work or home. Some experts argue that the relationship between fitness and mortality risk is a little more nuanced than the latest study suggests. 'Based on these types of studies, we cannot very confidently say to what extent this lower mortality risk is due to the differences in activity or other factors that differ,' Marcel Ballin, who researches physical activity and health at Uppsala University in Sweden, told Euronews Next. That could include genetics and environmental exposures that influence people's health and well-being. For example, a study published in the European Journal of Epidemiology earlier this year found that genetics plays a significant role in mortality risk. While physical activity was relevant, longevity reflects people's overall health, not just that one factor, the study found. Ballin suggested the latest findings should be taken with a grain of salt. 'What we can say is that if you are belonging to a group that is more active than the average, and you're consistently being active or increasing your activity over time, it seems to be good for your mortality risk,' he said. 'But, we need to be more careful when attributing the lower mortality to the activity itself,' he added.
