Israeli airstrike on Gaza apartment block kills at least 23 Palestinians
The Israeli military claimed that it had targeted terror operatives while accusing Hamas of using civilian infrastructure to carry out attacks.
'The death toll from the Shujaiya massacre has risen to 23 martyrs, including eight children and eight women,' Gaza 's civil defence agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP, adding that more than 60 people were wounded.
'There are still people trapped under the rubble.'
Ayub Salim, 26, a Shujaiya resident, told the French news agency that he witnessed the attack on the four-storey block. He said the area, 'overcrowded with tents, displaced people and homes', was hit with 'multiple missiles'.
'Shrapnel flew in all directions,' he said and described a 'terrifying and indescribable scene'. 'Dust and massive destruction filled the entire place, we couldn't see anything, just the screams and panic of the people.' He said that people were 'torn to pieces'.
'Even now, emergency crews are still transporting the dead and the injured,' he said. 'It is truly a horrific massacre.'
Israel ended a nearly two-month ceasefire with Hamas on 2 March, completely halting the flow of food, fuel and medicines into the besieged Palestinian territory and resuming massive airstrikes two weeks later.
The renewed Israeli bombardment has displaced nearly 400,000 Palestinians, the United Nations said.
The health ministry, run by Hamas, reported on Wednesday that the latest wave of Israelis had killed at least 1,482 people, bringing the total number of deaths since the war began in October 2023 to 50,846.
The Israeli military claimed that it had targeted a senior Hamas operative allegedly responsible for attacks originating from the Shujaiya area, though it did not identify the individual or share additional information.
Hamas condemned the strike on Wednesday as one of the 'most heinous acts of genocide'.
'The terrorist Zionist occupation army has committed a bloody massacre by bombing a densely populated residential area filled with civilians and displaced people,' the group said in a statement. 'These ongoing massacres against our defenceless people – with full support from the American administration which is complicit in the aggression – represent a stain on the conscience of the international community.'
Meanwhile, French president Emmanuel Macron said France aimed to move towards recognising a Palestinian state in the coming months, with the goal of doing so by June.
In an interview aired on France-5 on Wednesday, Mr Macron said the timeline aligned with an international conference on implementing a two-state solution, which France and Saudi Arabia were set to co-host.
Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited Washington this week to meet US president Donald Trump. While they both expressed concern for the Israeli hostages still held by Hamas, they offered few details on any potential deal to pause the fighting.
Mr Trump reiterated his desire to end the fighting but proposed a controversial postwar plan for Gaza involving population transfer, by force or voluntarily, an idea welcomed by Israel but rejected by Washington's Middle East allies.
Mr Netanyahu, meanwhile, was under mounting pressure from his domestic political allies to continue the war in Gaza until Hamas was fully defeated.

But now a new statement has been issued revealing that the medical team at a Bangkok Hospital had "detected a severe infection in the bloodstream, leading them to administer antibiotics and medication to stimulate blood pressure in order to maintain stable levels." The statement added: "The doctors have reported that the Princess' lungs and kidneys have been functioning with support from medical devices and medication." Back in December 2022, the princess was reportedly out running with her dogs in the Khao Yai national park when she collapsed. At the time, it was unclear exactly how serious her condition was. Princess Bajrakitiyabha is the Thai public's royal sweetheart, with her previously having been expected to take over from King Vajiralongkorn. She is his eldest child and daughter of his first wife, Princess Soamsawali. The princess is a senior officer of her dad's personal guard and has been a part of his inner circle since his succession in 2016. She is the most successful of the inner group, with several degrees, including Master's degrees from leading US university, Cornell. She also worked for the United Nations and did a stint as Thailand's ambassador to Austria. King Vajiralongkorn, 71, has married four times and has seven children, but he has not named an official heir. His fourth marriage to Queen Suthida was announced just days before his coronation in 2019. The King took the crown following the death of his father, King Bhumibol Adulyadej in 2016. The monarchy has long been considered a pillar of Thai society, and criticism of it has been taboo. Conservative Thais, especially in the military and courts, still consider it untouchable. However, public debate on the topic has recently grown louder, particularly among young people.

Four more foods could require allergy warning labels after deaths
Researchers say four foods, including goat's milk and pine nuts, may need allergy warning labels. The recommendation follows a recent study that highlighted eight foods currently not included on the list for mandatory allergy labelling but which are regularly involved in cases of anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction that can happen very quickly. Experts in France analysed food-induced anaphylaxis cases reported to the Allergy Vigilance Network from 2002–2023 and found that in almost 3,000 cases, some 413 were caused by eight emerging allergens without mandatory labelling, including two deaths. 'We therefore believe it is time to review the list of the 14 foods with mandatory labelling to include at least the most severe of these emerging food allergens,' study author Dominique Sabouraud-Leclerc said. Writing in the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Allergy, researchers suggest four of these foods – goat and sheep milk, buckwheat, peas and lentils, and pine nuts – should be included on allergen listings due to their 'frequency, severity, recurrence, and potential for hidden exposure'. The recurrence rate – which means the same allergen caused a number of reactions in the same patient – ranged from 7.3 per cent for peas and lentils to 56 per cent for goat and sheep milk. Researchers also warned that other ingredients to be wary of include kiwi, apple, beehive products like pollen, and alpha-gal, which can be found in red meat. In the UK and EU, food businesses are required to highlight 14 major allergens on packaging, including: Anaphylaxis symptoms usually start within minutes of coming into contact with an allergen and can include swelling of the throat and tongue, trouble breathing and fainting.

Listeria outbreak linked to cheese sold worldwide as two dead and dozens ill
There are now fears that the infection could have spread to the UK. Two people have died following a listeria outbreak with health officials recalling potentially fatal soft cheese. In France, where the two victims also passed away, a further 21 people also became seriously ill from eating bacteria-contaminated dairy between December 2024 and August 13 of this year. As reported by the Mirror, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands and Norway have all also confirmed four cases of listeriosis between April 14 and July 9. There are now fears that the infection could have spread to the UK, although, at the time of writing, no related cases have been reported. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) believe that pasteurised soft cow's and goat's milk cheeses produced by French manufacturer Chavegrand is potentially linked to the cases. The company has since recalled all batches of cheese produced before June 23, 2025. The products are all soft cheeses made from pasteurized cow's milk or goat's milk. They were marketed until August 9 in France as well as other countries, under different commercial brand names. They are identified by the health mark FR 23.117.001 - and anyone who has bought this particular cheese has been warned not to eat it. A spokesperson for the company said: 'We have increased the number of tests on products and equipment by a factor of 100 to ensure there were no contaminants All our employees, who have been working very hard since June, are stunned by this news." French health officials added: 'Anyone who has consumed [these cheeses] and experiences a fever, whether isolated or accompanied by headaches and body aches, should consult their doctor and inform them of their use." Listeriosis symptoms can begin up to eight weeks after eating contaminated food. Listeriosis symptoms Listeriosis is an infection caused by a bacteria called Listeria monocytogenes. It can cause the following symptoms, which generally last a few days for the majority of people. However, if they persist for for longer, you're advised to ask for an urgent GP appointment or call NHS 111. High temperature Aches and pains Chills Feeling or being sick Diarrhoea If you're pregnant, you may also have a stomach ache or notice your baby moving less than usual. Babies with listeriosis may also be irritable and feed less than usual. Older people are at higher risk of getting seriously ill from listeriosis and the risk increases with age. In the most recent cases in France, those affected were between 34 and 95 - 11 of them were women. While in the four other countries with reported cases, the patients were between of 35 and 70. Despite the potential seriousness of listeria, the ECDC assured the public that contamination of pasteurized soft cheese is rare.
