Tampa Bay Rays In Exclusive Talks To Sell Club To Group Led By Florida Home Builder

More Getty Images) The Tampa Bay Rays have announced that they are in advanced talks to sell to a group led by Patrick Zalupski, the founder, chairman, and CEO of Dream Finders Homes, a Florida-based homebuilder. The Rays released a statement saying, 'The team has recently commenced exclusive discussions with a group led by Zalupski, Bill Cosgrove, Ken Babby, and prominent Tampa Bay investors concerning a possible sale of the team.' Sportico reported that the deal has a team value of $1.7 billion. The most recent Forbes valuation ranks the Rays 29th out of 30 with a value of $1.25 billion. Forbes shows Zalupski's real-time net worth as $1.4 billion. Stu Sternberg purchased the Rays for $200 million ($340,354,685 inflation-adjusted) in 2004. A potential sale has been somewhat expected. The Rays have struggled to build a new ballpark to replace Tropicana Field, and that issue was compounded when Hurricane Milton shredded the roof off The Trop. The Rays have been playing at Steinbrenner Field, the Yankees' Spring Training home, while awaiting repairs to be made. While the St. Petersburg City Council voted 7-1 to approve $22.5 million for repairs, the Rays announced in March that they were backing out of a deal with the city and Pinellas County for a new $1.3 billion ballpark, citing increased costs. That raised the ire of MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred and several owners, given that a new ballpark for the Rays is the last impediment to league expansion. The Athletic reported in March that Sternberg was being pressured to sell the club. Should the sale transpire, new ownership would face the new ballpark issue front and center. While the price tag was $1.3 billion, it's unclear whether changes to the economy, with the additions to tariffs and inflation, would increase the price tag, and whether Zalupski and his partners would be able to engage with the City of St. Petersburg to get a ballpark built near where Tropicana Field sits. Under Sternberg, the Rays had committed to contributing $700 million to the new ballpark.

Ex-Phillies GM Ruben Amaro: Nick Castellanos Disrespected Rob Thomson ‘A Whole Lot'
Phillies' Nick Castellanos benched for 'inappropriate comment' . (AP Photo/Laurence Kesterson) Former Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro said it was 'the right thing to do' for Philadelphia manager Rob Thomson to bench outfielder Nick Castellanos for Tuesday's game against the Marlins after Castellanos made an "inappropriate comment" to the manager a night earlier. On the Phillies Show podcast that dropped on Wednesday, Amaro said, 'I bet whatever [Castellanos] said to him that Rob Thomson wanted to beat his ass. I'm sure he wanted to fight him… Rob Thomson doesn't make those moves unless it was disrespectful.' Thomson said Castellanos made the comment after he was removed from Monday's game in the eighth inning for defensive purposes. He was replaced by Johan Rojas, who played center field while Max Kepler shifted from center to take over for Castellanos in right. Amaro, who is also part of the Phillies broadcast team, said on the podcast that he has no information on the comment that provoked Castellanos' benching. 'He probably had to disrespect [Thomson] a whole lot to get pulled out of that game because Thomson is not a knee-jerk guy. He is a very level-headed man. But at some point you have a breaking point and you can't be embarrassed by your players," Amaro said. Amaro also agreed with Thomson's decision to pull Castellanos for defensive purposes. 'I have to say that the move that Rob Thomson made was perfect,' Amaro said. 'Get the best defensive players there and go. That's what you do as a manager. You put the best defensive team out there. No disrespect to Castellanos.' Castellanos said of the incident, "I wasn't happy about it, spoke my mind. He said that I crossed a line. So, my punishment is I'm not playing." Castellanos' consecutive games streak ended at 236. The last game he missed for the Phillies was on Sept. 30, 2023. Thomson downplayed over the drama before Monday's game. "One of the many things about Nick that I love is that he's very emotional," the manager said. "He loves to play, and he loves to play every inning of every game. I just thought last night he made an inappropriate comment after he came out, and so today, he's not going to play. And I'm going to leave it at that." Castellanos, in his fourth season with the Phillies after signing a five-year $100 million contract in 2022, is hitting .278 with seven home runs and 36 RBIs this season.

Tampa Bay Rays say they are in talks for potential team sale amid ballpark uncertainty
The Tampa Bay Rays say they are in "exclusive discussions" with a Florida investment group for a potential sale of the team. The Rays are valued at $1.25 billion, according to Forbes magazine. Stuart Sternberg bought the Major League Baseball club for $200 million in 2004. "The Tampa Bay Rays announced that the team has recently commenced exclusive discussions with a group led by Patrick Zalupski, Bill Cosgrove, Ken Babby and prominent Tampa Bay investors concerning a possible sale of the team," the club said Wednesday while declining further comment. The potential sale comes at a precarious time for the Rays and their home ballpark. They are playing this season at the spring training home of the New York Yankees in Tampa after the roof of Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg was heavily damaged during Hurricane Milton last October. Before the hurricane, the Rays and the city had agreed on a plan for a $1.3 billion stadium development project next to Tropicana Field. In March, Sternberg said the club was withdrawing from that agreement. St. Petersburg is spending about $55 million to repair Tropicana Field with a plan for the Rays to return there in 2026. The city and the club have a three-year agreement to play there. Beyond that, the club's future in the Tampa Bay area is uncertain. When the Rays withdrew from the project, the city noted that it was possible the club would have new owners. "If in the coming months a new owner, who demonstrates a commitment to honoring their agreements and our community priorities emerges, we will consider a partnership to keep baseball in St. Pete," Mayor Ken Welch said in March. "But we will not put our city's progress on hold as we await a collaborative and community-focused baseball partner."
