Trillions of cells from dozens of key coral species on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) - collected each year during mass spawning - offer the chance to regenerate damaged and diminished corals now and into the future.
"Essentially, a pause button has been pressed on their biological clocks," said Justine O'Brien, manager of conservation science at Taronga Conservation Society Australia.
"I hope our collective efforts can help to retain the reef's beautiful diversity," she said.
Since the coral programme began in 2011, Taronga's CryoDiversity Bank has been intruding annually on the GBR's spawning, when corals send eggs and sperm into the waters for breeding.
Scientists collect the sperm and mix it with cryoprotectants, which remove water as the samples freeze, and protect internal cell structures.
Eggs contain too much water and fat to be frozen without damage using current techniques, so for now cannot be similarly banked, but other cells are also harvested and frozen for research.
The samples are placed into liquid nitrogen and stored at -196 degrees Celsius. Strict measures ensure the temperature never changes.
"We can keep them alive indefinitely," O'Brien said.
"You could thaw them out a few years from now, a few decades from now or hundreds of years from now and they will have retained the same fertilising potential that existed when they were initially collected and frozen."
So far the bank has 34 species of the approximately 400 kinds of hard corals on the GBR, prioritising those most essential to reef structure and function, with plans to expand.
In addition to reproduction, the samples can be used for research and record-keeping, helping track the effects of warming seas, overfishing and pollution that threaten coral reefs globally.
Scientists forecast that at 1.5 Celsius of warming, some 70 to 90 percent of the world's coral reefs could disappear - a disastrous prospect for people and the planet.
Coral reefs support not just marine life but hundreds of millions of people living in coastal communities by providing food, protection from storms and livelihoods through fishing and tourism.
Warming oceans cause coral to expel the algae that provides not just their characteristic colour but also their food. Once bleached, they are exposed to disease and death by starvation.
A global coral bleaching event has been unfolding since 2023, spreading to 84 percent of the world's reefs, across the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic oceans.
Live coral cover has halved since the 1950s due to climate change and environmental damage, the International Coral Reef Initiative, a global conservation partnership, said this year.
Next week, nations will meet in France for a UN oceans summit where they will be under pressure to deliver action and much-needed funds to better protect the world's overexploited and polluted seas.
But the third UN Ocean Conference may struggle to find global consensus and raise money given ongoing disagreements over deep-sea mining, plastic trash and overfishing.
O'Brien warns the GBR is under pressure, despite the resilience it has already shown.
"We know the frequency and severity of impacts that are now occurring are not giving the reef enough recovery time," she said.
The cryobank, one of just a handful around the world, offers a glimmer of hope.
Last year, Taronga and Australian Institute of Marine Science researchers successfully thawed frozen coral sperm to fertilise fresh eggs, producing viable coral larvae that were placed back onto the reef.
It was a world-first for the GBR and preliminary surveys show the transplants have grown well.
These efforts - part of a broader programme looking at everything from shading corals to transplanting more heat-tolerant varieties - are a "small part of the solution to the global coral reef crisis," said WWF-Australia's head of oceans Richard Leck.
But he warned that more needs to be done to ensure the long-term survival of coral.
"Reefs are incredibly resilient and they do bounce back remarkably quickly after major disturbances," he said.
"There is certainly a window to get reefs through climate change, but it is clear that that window is closing." | AFP

LONDON - The UK experienced its warmest spring on record -- and its driest in more than 50 years. Temperatures for the season have been frequently elevated this century, according to the data from the Met Office, which said: "Eight of the 10 warmest UK springs have occurred since the year 2000." The data "clearly shows that recent decades have been warmer, sunnier, and often drier than the 20th century average," said Met Office scientist Emily Carlisle. The Met Office said provisional temperatures registered between March and May this year averaged 9.51 degrees Celsius (49.1 degrees Fahrenheit). That beat the last record, set in last year's spring, when the average was 9.37 degrees. The next warmest springs were in 2011, 2014 and 2007, according to the Met Office which has been recording temperature data since 1884. "England was particularly dry, experiencing its driest spring in more than 100 years, beaten only by 1893," it added. The Met Office's Carlisle said: "The UK's climate continues to change. What's particularly notable about spring 2025 is the combination of record warmth and sunshine, alongside very low rainfall." "This spring shows some of the changes we're seeing in our weather patterns, with more extreme conditions, including prolonged dry, sunny weather, becoming more frequent," she said. The recent weather's dominant feature had been the persistent high-pressure systems, often coming from the Azores or mainland Europe. These had lingered over the UK since late February and blocked the usual flow of Atlantic weather fronts, allowing high pressure to dominate, the Met Office said.

PARIS - Oceans have absorbed the vast majority of the warming caused by burning fossil fuels and shielded societies from the full impact of greenhouse gas emissions. But this crucial ally has developed alarming symptoms of stress -- heatwaves, loss of marine life, rising sea levels, falling oxygen levels and acidification caused by the uptake of excess carbon dioxide. These effects risk not just the health of the ocean but the entire planet. - Heating up - By absorbing more than 90 percent of the excess heat trapped in the atmosphere by greenhouse gases, "oceans are warming faster and faster", said Angelique Melet, an oceanographer at the European Mercator Ocean monitor. The UN's IPCC climate expert panel has said the rate of ocean warming -- and therefore its heat uptake -- has more than doubled since 1993. Average sea surface temperatures reached new records in 2023 and 2024. Warmer seas can make storms more violent, feeding them with heat and evaporated water. The heating water can also be devastating for species, especially corals and seagrass beds, which are unable to migrate. For corals, between 70 percent and 90 percent are expected to be lost this century if the world reaches 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) of warming compared to pre-industrial levels. Scientists expect that threshold -- the more ambitious goal of the Paris climate deal -- to be breached in the early 2030s or even before. - Relentless rise - When a liquid or gas warms up, it expands and takes up more space. In the case of the oceans, this thermal expansion combines with the slow but irreversible melting of the world's ice caps and mountain glaciers to lift the world's seas. The pace at which global oceans are rising has doubled in three decades and if current trends continue, it will double again by 2100 to about one centimetre per year, according to recent research. Around 230 million people worldwide live less than a metre above sea level, vulnerable to increasing threats from floods and storms. "Ocean warming, like sea-level rise, has become an inescapable process on the scale of our lives, but also over several centuries," said Melet. "But if we reduce greenhouse gas emissions, we will reduce the rate and magnitude of the damage, and gain time for adaptation". - More acidity, less oxygen - The ocean not only stores heat, it has also taken up 20 to 30 percent of all humans' carbon dioxide emissions since the 1980s, according to the IPCC, causing the waters to become more acidic. Acidification weakens corals and makes it harder for shellfish and the skeletons of crustaceans and certain plankton to calcify. "Another key indicator is oxygen concentration, which is obviously important for marine life," said Melet.
