WGA Awards: ‘Anora' Wins For Original Screenplay
The guild's nominations honoring the year's best in film, TV, new media, news, radio and promotional writing were revealed January 15 after being postponed twice due to the L.A. wildfires.

At last year's strike-delayed WGA Awards, the top film prizes for Original Screenplay and Adapted Screenplay to The Holdovers and American Fiction, respectively. The latter already had won the Academy Award for Cord Jefferson, but Justine Triet and Arthur Harari's Anatomy of a Fall beat Alexander Payne's Holdovers for the Original Screenplay Oscar. The Writers Guild top TV winners in 2024 were Succession, The Bear Beef and The Last of Us.

The WGA West and East also are giving special honors to several folks tonight. David Lynch, who died in January, has been named the recipient of the WGA West's 2025 Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement. Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul creator Vince Gilligan is set for the WGAW's Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award for Television Writing Achievement, and Nickel Boys screenwriters RaMell Ross and Joslyn Barnes will receive its 2025 Paul Selvin Award.
WGAE will honor Scott Frank with the Ian McLellan Hunter Award for Career Achievement, Bill Lawrence (Herb Sargent Award for Comedy Excellence) and Kathy McGee (Richard B. Jablow Award).

The WGA Awards often exclude several top films due to eligibility rules. If a film is produced outside the WGA collective bargaining agreement or written by a non-union member, it is not eligible for the guild's awards.
This holds true again this year, which means such awards-season favorites as Golden Globe winner Conclave, Emilia Pérez, I'm Still Here, Inside Out 2, The Room Next Door, Sing Sing and The Wild Robot are out of the Adapted race. Among those ineligible for Original Screenplay are All We Imagine as Light, The Brutalist, Hard Truths, Gotham Awards winner His Three Daughters, I Saw the TV Glow, The Seed of the Sacred Fig, September 5 and The Substance.
Joel Kim Booster is hosting the Los Angeles ceremony from the Beverly Hilton, and Roy Wood Jr. is emceeing the New York show at Edison Ballroom in Manhattan.

Hall and Faris starred in the first four "Scary Movie" films, but only the first two were written and directed by the Wayans Bros. With the family creative group getting involved again, they are bringing back two of the most fan-favorite characters in the franchise. According to Deadline, the film is set to shoot in October and is slated for a June 12, 2026, release date. Considering Cindy and Brenda are returning, it would be believed that Sean's Ray Wilkins and Marlon's Shorty would also be making a return, though that has not yet been confirmed. The original two "Scary Movie" films were a massive hit with audiences, with the first film releasing in 2000 and pulling in $278 million worldwide on a budget of $19 million. The second chapter in the "Scary Movie" universe followed shortly after in 2001, bringing in $141 million on a $45 million budget. The entire franchise has gone on to earn over $897 million through five films, making its return not at all shocking. Despite the big return, the Wayans Brothers have not been involved in the creativity of the franchise since "Scary Movie 2." The original films parodied "Scream," "I Know What You Did Last Summer," "The Exorcist," "The Shining," and so much more. Given the current state of horror, expect there to be a lot of films that are made fun of, such as "The Conjuring" films, though this is just speculation. The actress, 29, and Harington, 38, played onscreen siblings Sansa Stark and Jon Snow on Game of Thrones and now portray lovers in The Dreadful. Turner discussed the film on Late Night with Seth Meyers Thursday. When 'Americana' Will Be Available to Stream and How to Watch
A lot of summer blockbusters have been released lately, like Superman, Jurassic World Rebirth, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. But if you're looking for something a little smaller and a little less CGI, you might want to check out the Western-thriller-heist film Americana. The debut feature from director Tony Tost is about a group of people in South Dakota, who are all trying to get their hands on a valuable Lakota ghost shirt said to be worth a million dollars. The cast includes Sydney Sweeney, Halsey, Paul Walter Hauser, Zahn McClarnon, and Simon Rex. Curious to see pop singer Halsey in an acting role? Intrigued by the idea of Sweeney playing a diner waitress/wannabe country singer? Read on to find out when and where you can check out Americana. Americana will be in theaters starting Friday, August 15. As is usually the case with theatrical releases, early showings will start in many cinemas the day before. But while Americana is hitting theaters now, it's actually a 2023 movie. It premiered at South by Southwest two years ago. According to Deadline, the delay may have been due to financial issues involving one of the film's production companies. If you want to watch Americana at your local theater—woohoo, popcorn! woohoo, helping movie theaters stay in business!—simply look up the showtimes and get going. You can buy tickets from your theater's website, on Fandango, or in person. You will be able to watch Americana at home, it's just a question of when. Americana is distributed by Lionsgate. The John Wick spinoff Ballerina, which was also distributed by Lionsgate, was made available on Video-on-Demand (meaning, you can pay to rent it on a platform like Amazon Prime Video) about a month after its theatrical release. You can expect something similar for Americana. As for streaming, Lionsgate movies tend to go to Starz first, followed by Peacock. To again use Ballerina as a reference point, it premiered in theaters June 6 and is not streaming on either of those platforms as of mid-August. So, it could be a few months if you're looking to stream Americana. How badly do you want to find out what goes down with that ghost shirt?
