The WGA West and East also are giving special honors to several folks tonight. David Lynch, who died in January, has been named the recipient of the WGA West's 2025 Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement. Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul creator Vince Gilligan is set for the WGAW's Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award for Television Writing Achievement, and Nickel Boys screenwriters RaMell Ross and Joslyn Barnes will receive its 2025 Paul Selvin Award.
WGAE will honor Scott Frank with the Ian McLellan Hunter Award for Career Achievement, Bill Lawrence (Herb Sargent Award for Comedy Excellence) and Kathy McGee (Richard B. Jablow Award).

The WGA Awards often exclude several top films due to eligibility rules. If a film is produced outside the WGA collective bargaining agreement or written by a non-union member, it is not eligible for the guild's awards.
This holds true again this year, which means such awards-season favorites as Golden Globe winner Conclave, Emilia Pérez, I'm Still Here, Inside Out 2, The Room Next Door, Sing Sing and The Wild Robot are out of the Adapted race. Among those ineligible for Original Screenplay are All We Imagine as Light, The Brutalist, Hard Truths, Gotham Awards winner His Three Daughters, I Saw the TV Glow, The Seed of the Sacred Fig, September 5 and The Substance.
Joel Kim Booster is hosting the Los Angeles ceremony from the Beverly Hilton, and Roy Wood Jr. is emceeing the New York show at Edison Ballroom in Manhattan.
Here are the winners so far at the 2025 Writers Guild Awards:

TIFF 50th Edition Kicking Off With Colin Hanks & Ryan Reynolds' New Documentary ‘John Candy: I Like Me'

The Toronto International Film Festival is opening its 50th edition on Sept. 4 with a look back at one of the Great White North's own: legendary SCTV comedic actor-turned-comedy superstar, John Candy in the Colin Hanks directed, Ryan Reynolds produced new documentary, John Candy: I Like Me. That second part of the title, of course, is a nod to Candy's famous line in John Hughes' Planes, Trains and Automobiles, when his goofy character Del Griffith stands up to the cynical Neal Page and exclaims, 'I like me.' One of Candy's big breakout movies stateside was 1984's Splash in which he co-starred with Hanks' father, Tom Hanks. TIFF will run from Sept. 4-14. 'Comedy fans all over the world grew up on John Candy's humor,' said Cameron Bailey, CEO of TIFF. 'We love that John's global career started in Toronto, and we can't wait to share John Candy: I Like Me with everyone at this year's Opening Night Gala premiere. Colin Hanks has made a hugely entertaining film packed with some of Hollywood's biggest stars, but like John, this movie is all heart. For us, it's the perfect way to kick off TIFF's 50th edition.''When you hear the name John Candy, your face lights up. He wasn't just a great actor; he was an even better person. People loved his everyman qualities, but they didn't know how relatable John really was. He went through the same struggles we all do, except now we talk about them. We are incredibly honored to have gotten to know the man better through this process and to bring the real John Candy to audiences starting with his hometown of Toronto,' said Hanks and Reynolds in a statement. John Candy: I Like Me, an Amazon MGM title, will debut on Prime Video this fall. Amazon MGM Studios also fired up SXSW with the Paul Feig directed movie, Another Simple Favor. 'The Gilded Age' season 3 trailer teases wedding drama, divorce and fabulous Carrie Coon outfits

"The Gilded Age" season 3 trailer has dropped, and it's clear the stakes are higher than ever in the HBO period drama, which returns June 22. It's been nearly two years that we last caught up with the Russells, the Van Rhijns, the Astors and all the other moneyed families that make up the New York society of "The Gilded Age," which stars Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Cynthia Nixon and Christine Baranski, among others. Back in December 2023, season 2 left off with Bertha Russell (Coon) officially winning the "opera war" against Mrs. Astor (Donna Murphy); Marian Brooke (Louisa Jacobson) breaking off her engagement to Dashiell Montgomery (David Furr); Ada Forte (Nixon) inheriting a surprising amount of money after the death of her new husband Luke (Robert Sean Leonard); and Peggy Scott (Denée Benton) leaving the newspaper after things got complicated with her editor. The new two-minute trailer sees both parental and marital discord hitting the Russell residence, with Bertha and George (Spector) disagreeing on whether their daughter Gladys (Tessa Farmiga) should marry for romantic love or financial security. During a February 2025 interview with Deadline, HBO Executive Vice President Francesca Orsi teased that season three of the series would explore a new era, when "divorce came to the forefront in United States relationships." "I think that there's a conversation to be had about arranged marriages, and if it doesn't necessarily work, what divorce looks like in that time, and what that bodes for society," Orsi told the outlet. "And then whether you're accepted in society or not, based on a divorce.' Does that signal major troubles ahead for the Russells? Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Romance-wise, things look like they're going far more smoothly for Marian Brook and Bertha's son, Larry Russell (Harry Richardson), as well as Peggy, who sees a new love interest in one Dr. William Kirkland (played by Jordan Donica), a handsome doctor from Newport. The official season 3 logline reads: 'Following the Opera War, the old guard is weakened and the Russells stand poised to take their place at the head of society. Bertha sets her sights on a prize that would elevate the family to unimaginable heights while George risks everything on a gambit that could revolutionize the railroad industry — if it doesn't ruin him first." "Across the street, the Brook household is thrown into chaos as Agnes refuses to accept Ada's new position as lady of the house," continues the synopsis. "Peggy meets a handsome doctor from Newport whose family is less than enthusiastic about her career. As all of New York hastens toward the future, their ambition may come at the cost of what they truly hold dear.' Tom's Guide will keep you updated on all things related to "The Gilded Age" season 3, including new teaser clips, plot points, character details, casting announcements and more.
