South Sudan parties adjourn talks in Kenya
There are three priority areas of critical importance necessary to ending the perpetual transition in South Sudan, Sumbeiywo said. The unification of forces and security sector reforms, the permanent constitution-making process, and the holding of free, fair, credible and transparent elections are the three key points that could help end conflict in the country, he said.
"Given the acute human insecurity and humanitarian crisis in South Sudan, the mediation believes that actions must be taken for there to be effective mechanisms of implementation," Sumbeiywo said in a communique issued in Nairobi. Dubbed Tumaini, meaning hope in Swahili, the peace talks between South Sudan's transitional government and opposition groups have been ongoing in Nairobi since last year but have sometimes been postponed to allow for further consultations among the parties involved.
During the latest round of talks, Sumbeiywo said, the root causes of the conflict were extensively deliberated through a joint technical committee. The committee summarized the root causes as political, governance and leadership crises; power struggle; structural and institutional weaknesses; and economic crisis and resource mismanagement, he said. Other root causes include insecurity and militarization of society; lack of social cohesion and historical factors; and external and geopolitical influences.

Xi added that 'all countries should unite and firmly oppose unilateralism and protectionism', Xinhua reported—a thinly veiled reference to US tariffs. A statement by the Brazilian presidency said the phone call lasted about an hour, during which time Lula and Xi discussed a range of topics including the war in Ukraine and combating climate change. 'Both agreed on the role of the G20 and BRICS in defending multilateralism', the statement said, referring to the Group of Twenty major economies and a bloc of emerging powers. The leaders also 'committed to expanding the scope of cooperation in sectors such as health, oil and gas, digital economy and satellites', the statement added. Beijing has worked in recent years to court Latin America as a way of countering Washington—historically the most influential major power in the region. China has surpassed the United States as Brazil's largest trading partner, and two-thirds of Latin American countries have signed up to Xi's Belt and Road infrastructure drive. Brazil exports large quantities of soybeans to China, which—as the world's largest consumer of the ingredient—relies heavily on imports for its supply. But Trump is seeking to encourage a shift in how China sources the commodity, used for livestock feed and to make cooking oil. The US President said in a social media post Sunday that he hoped China will 'quickly quadruple its soybean orders', adding this would be a way to balance trade with the United States. Putin bans foreign-made clothing for Russian army from 2026
MOSCOW, Aug 12, (Xinhua): Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on Monday banning the procurement of foreign-made clothing and related gear for the country's armed forces starting in 2026. According to the decree, from Jan 1, 2026, all uniforms and other clothing items for the Russian Armed Forces must be produced by Russian companies whose manufacturing facilities are located within the country. By 2027, the requirement will extend to fabrics and knitted materials used in production, which must be domestically manufactured. The measure aims to entirely exclude the purchase of foreign-made clothing and materials for the needs of the military, the decree said. Military clothing and gear include uniforms, insignia, underwear, bedding, special clothing, footwear, equipment, and sanitary items. Such supplies are procured through the Russian state defense order system.

8 killed, 3 injured in Ecuador shooting
QUITO, Aug 11, (Xinhua): Eight people were killed and three others injured Sunday when a group of armed gunmen opened fire on a crowd outside a nightclub in Santa Lucia, a city in Ecuador's western province of Guayas, local media reported. The armed gunmen arrived at the nightclub early Sunday in two cars and opened fire on those present, according to a media report. Police said one of those killed, Jorge Urquizo, was the brother of the city's mayor, Ubaldo Urquizo. The province of Guayas has seen a sharp rise in violent crime, driven largely by gang activity. On Aug 6, Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa declared a state of emergency for 60 days in four provinces, including Guayas and Manabi, citing serious internal unrest.
