Minnesota seeks to rally from Leagues Cup letdown, host Rapids
Minnesota United will try to rebound from a disappointing end to their Leagues Cup campaign on Sunday when they host a Colorado Rapids side moving on from one of its best players.
Minnesota (12-5-8, 44 points) lost 2-0 to Atletico San Luis on the final day of the first phase of the tournament Wednesday, when a multiple-goal victory might have kept the Loons alive.
The Matchday 3 defeat came after MNUFC gave back the lead three times in a 3-3 draw with Club America on Matchday 2.
Now Loons manager Eric Ramsay faces the challenge of learning from those uneven performances while keeping confidence high within a team that currently sits third in the Western Conference.
'What I don't want to happen is any bad feeling to seep into how we feel about MLS, how we feel about Open Cup,' Ramsay said after the San Luis match. 'We have to really look at ourselves hard around some of the themes across the three games. But ultimately I want to preserve that feeling of this being a group that is moving in the right direction.'
Tani Oluwaseyi and Bongi Hlongwane each scored twice in the tournament, while Oluwaseyi and Kelin Yeboah each have nine league goals.
Colorado (8-11-6, 30 points) has two players on nine MLS goals. But one is Djordje Mihailovic, who was dealt to Toronto FC this week for a cash trade worth up to a $9 million fee.
The other is Rafael Navarro, who scored three more times in Leagues Cup play, including once in Thursday's 2-2 draw against reigning Concacaf Champions Cup winners Cruz Azul.
While Mihailovic will clearly be missed, manager Chris Armas will be looking to make up for his absence collectively. And he took encouragement from the draw with Cruz Azul, in which he fielded a significantly rotated squad against arguably the best team on the continent.
'A really good example of what a real team looks like,' Armas said afterward. 'A team that doesn't really break, but we bend and take some blows along the way.'

Late goals lift Orlando past KC after long delay
(Photo credit: Kim Klement Neitzel-Imagn Images) Late goals from substitutes Ramiro Enrique and Nicolas Rodriguez gave Orlando City SC a 3-1 win over visiting Sporting Kansas City on Saturday in a game delayed by more than three hours because of weather. A 1-1 deadlock was broken by Enrique in the 76th minute, just five minutes after the striker entered the match. Enrique received a pass from Martin Ojeda in the box, then created space amidst three Kansas City players before his left-footed shot found the back of the net. Enrique's eighth goal of the season was quickly followed by the first MLS goal of Rodriguez's career. Rodriguez's 83rd-minute tally came six minutes after the 21-year-old striker took the field. The Lions (13-6-8, 47 points) are 6-0-1 in their last seven matches in all competitions, including a four-match winning streak in regular-season action. Tyrese Spicer also scored for Orlando City, who moved up to a tie for fourth place in the Eastern Conference with Saturday's win. Ojeda earned his 14th assist of the season on Enrique's goal. Ojeda has at least one goal or assist in each of his last 12 regular-season matches, tying him for the second-longest goal contribution streak in MLS history. Dejan Joveljic had the only goal for Sporting Kansas City (6-14-6, 24 points), who are 0-4-1 in their last five matches. The winless drought has dropped SKC eight points under the Western Conference playoff line. Orlando City came out firing after the long wait with Spicer's one-touch goal in the second minute. Saturday marked Spicer's first start and second overall match with the Lions since being acquired from Toronto FC in a trade on Aug. 1. After the early concession, Kansas City responded with about 25 minutes of sustained attack. Mason Toye was the driver of the offense, including a near-miss in the 20th minute and a hard shot that required a Pedro Gallese save in the 23rd. Toye's efforts paid off with the equalizer in the 25th minute, as the forward maneuvered around Gallese and fired the ball towards the open net. Just before the ball crossed the line, Joveljic tapped it over for something of a vulture goal, and the striker's team-leading 14th tally of the season.

Rafael Navarro brace leads Rapids to victory over Atlanta United
(Photo credit: Matt Krohn-Imagn Images) Rafael Navarro scored his team-leading 10th and 11th goals and assisted on another to lift the Colorado Rapids to a 3-1 victory over Atlanta United on Saturday night in Commerce City, Colo. Darren Yapi added his seventh goal -- and his fourth in his last four games -- as the Rapids (10-11-6, 36 points) earned consecutive MLS wins for the first time since May 17 and 24. The Rapids have now scored 12 goals in their last five MLS games, their highest-scoring stretch this season, while moving up one spot to seventh in the Western Conference. Alexey Miranchuk scored his sixth goal of the season for Atlanta (4-12-10, 22 points), which saw its winless run stretch to 10 matches and remained winless on the road. Atlanta goalkeeper Brad Guzan got a hand on both Navarro goals -- and probably should have stopped the second -- while Miranchuk unintentionally blocked a near-certain second Atlanta goal by Tristan Muyumba later in the second half. Navarro had been tied with Djordje Mihailovic with nine goals before the latter was dealt to Toronto FC in a cash trade earlier this month. But after Yapi and Miranchuk traded first-half tallies, Navarro reached double digits after earning his own penalty kick opportunity after the break. Navarro dribbled into the area in the 62nd minute, defended by Juan Berrocal. As Berrocal made a challenge, Navarro changed direction. The defender caught Navarro's leg instead of the ball, and referee Victor Rivas had no choice but to point to the spot. Navarro's ensuing 64th-minute penalty overpowered Guzan, who had correctly guessed to his left. Navarro added his second from open play seven minutes later. After an attack down the right, Calvin Harris lost the ball at the edge of the penalty area under the weight of an Atlanta challenge. As other Rapids players appealed for another penalty, Navarro reached the loose ball and hammered a powerful low shot at Guzan, who was in position to make the save but spilled the ball over the line. Muyumba thought he had pulled a goal back for Atlanta in the 75th minute when he received a low cross on the back post with Colorado goalkeeper Zack Steffen stranded. But his first-time effort clattered into the legs of Miranchuk with the goal otherwise open and then over the line for a goal kick.

Lionel Messi has goal and assist in return from injury
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Lionel Messi returned from injury for Inter Miami to chants of 'Messi! Messi! Messi!' in a 3-1 win over the the LA Galaxy on Saturday. It was the magic defender Maximiliano Falcón said the team has come to expect. 'We're used to this. You saw what he did, got the ball with a clear look at goal and scored,' Falcón said in Spanish. Even after a two game absence it was no surprise that Messi, MLS' top goal scorer, led Inter Miami to victory. He had been training with the team since midweek and coach Javier Mascherano confirmed he would be available for the weekend match. The Argentine superstar put in a 45 minute shift and his countryman Rodrigo de Paul assisted him as they beat the worst team in MLS. The two world champions did not participate in pregame warmups, but they did warm up before they entered the game at halftime to the raucous cheers of Miami fans. Messi injured his hamstring on Aug. 2 against Necaxa in a Leagues Cup match. Inter Miami reached the Leagues Cup quarterfinals without him, but were defeated by instate rivals Orlando City 4-1 in MLS action. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Besides his ability, it's Messi's competitive attitude that transcends this Miami squad according to Mascherano. 'He wants to play every single game. He wanted to play in Orlando also. You have to understand why Leo is Leo, because he always wants to be on the pitch,' Mascherano said after the win over Galaxy. Messi's return comes at an important time, before his squad takes on eight-time Mexican champions Tigres UANL in South Florida on Wednesday. LA Galaxy, the reigning 2024 MLS Cup Champions, also looked at this Saturday's game as a chance to rotate their squad ahead of their Leagues Cup quarterfinal match against C.F. Pachuca. ___ AP soccer:
