New Fire Station construction, Public Safety Annex renovations underway at Town Madison

MADISON, Ala. (WHNT) — There was another groundbreaking in Madison Monday morning, this time with an eye on public safety in the Town Madison development.
Dirt was moved on the lot that will hold a 38,000-square-foot substation for the Madison Police Department and Fire & Rescue. This is a new project city leaders say will add to first responding capabilities.

'Which in turn helps our insurance rates stay low and our safety and our time frames to help get to our citizens low,' said Mayor Paul Finley. 'And it helps our police to be able to make sure in this area that's grown so dramatically that we have a proper police presence.'
More than $500,000 in state and federal funds were used to complete this project.
The Public Safety Annex on Business Park Boulevard will include a new Fire Station 4 and renovations to house specialized departments from MPD currently in City Hall. The new fire station will accommodate the Fire Marshalls Office, the City Emergency Manager and Fire Inspectors. Deputy Chief Brandy Williams noted the adequate space for training, a struggle at current locations.

'This building allows us to not only spread out with training but allows us to spread out some of our administrative personnel so they're not sharing offices anymore. The training part of it allows us multiple training rooms whereas we're limited to one training room right this minute,' Williams said.Mayor Finley told News 19 that one benefit to having a fire station is a drop in insurance rates for those living in and around Town Madison.
'One of the things when it comes to your insurance rates is response time. This fire station in this location helps us make sure that we continue to keep Madison resident's insurance rates as low as we can,' Finley said.
While renovations on the existing office space at the annex are expected to be complete this summer, the construction of Fire Station 4 is predicted to last until the spring of 2026.

Trump set to give TikTok 90 more days to avoid a US ban

TikTok now has until September to find a new owner as President Donald Trump plans to delay a ban. The company is legally required to separate from its parent, ByteDance. Trump has granted the company multiple extensions after it failed to comply with the law. TikTok lives to fight another day. President Donald Trump is set to issue an executive order this week giving the company 90 more days before he enforces a law requiring its owner, ByteDance, to divest from its US app, a White House spokesperson confirmed to Business Insider. It's the company's third extension. TikTok missed its original January 19 deadline to separate from its Chinese owner, and briefly went dark in the US before coming back online after Trump's assurances that he wouldn't immediately enforce the law. The president issued an executive order giving the company until April 5 to find a new owner, and later extended that timeline to June 19. Now, he's set to offer TikTok until mid-September to bargain. "As he has said many times, President Trump does not want TikTok to go dark," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. "This extension will last 90 days, which the Administration will spend working to ensure this deal is closed so that the American people can continue to use TikTok with the assurance that their data is safe and secure." All of these postponements fall outside the guidelines of the original law, which dictated that the president could grant a one-time, 90-day extension before the original January 19 deadline. Over the past five months, a wave of bidders has emerged for TikTok's US business, including Perplexity AI, AppLovin, and, according to the New York Times, Amazon. TikTok could also sell to a consortium of existing investors, which would allow ByteDance to maintain a minority stake. Trump tasked his vice president, JD Vance, to oversee deal negotiations. The push to sell TikTok and other apps owned by ByteDance kicked off in 2020, when Trump signed an executive order attempting to ban the company from app stores. While that effort was blocked by a federal judge, other state and federal politicians later raised concerns that TikTok could be used as a propaganda tool or data collection platform for the Chinese Communist Party. On April 24, 2024, President Joe Biden signed the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act into law, giving ByteDance 270 days to separate from its US app. A few months later, Trump began to warm up to TikTok, pledging on the campaign trail that he would try to rescue it from a ban (a change from his 2020 position). In May, Trump told NBC's "Meet the Press" host Kristen Welker that he had a "warm spot in his heart" for TikTok.

Chicago Fire unveil detailed look of proposed stadium for South Loop

The Chicago Fire unveiled detailed renderings of their proposed privately funded $650 million open-air soccer stadium Monday, a state-of-the-art facility at The 78 in the South Loop meant to look like it has been part of the city's sports landscape for a century. Situated along the Chicago River, the intimate 22,000-seat, red brick stadium features a natural grass pitch, a steel roof and a plethora of premium options to go with traditional supporter sections and general admission seating. Designed by architectural firm Gensler, the stadium is seeking to provide the Fire with a 'world-class home' and catalyze a Wrigleyville-like development at the mostly vacant 62-acre site south of Roosevelt Road. It purposely evokes a similar vintage to the Cubs longtime home. 'We've been involved in design since January, really trying to come up with a vision that aligned with what the team was hoping to do: establish a timelessness in that design that made it feel like a building that had been there a long time, that will be there a long time,' said Kirk Funkhouser, who oversees sports facility design and development out of Gensler's Austin office. The new stadium is scheduled to break ground as early as this fall, pending approval from the city, with a target completion date ahead of the 2028 MLS regular season. The Fire currently play at a rarely filled Soldier Field on a newly signed three-year lease extension. Fans at Soldier Field doubleheader see Fire and Stars' potential new homes having an impact on Chicago soccerRelated Midwest, which is developing The 78, acquired the former rail yard bordered by Roosevelt Road, Clark Street and a half-mile stretch of riverfront south of downtown Chicago, in 2016. The ambitious plan from the outset was to create a sprawling residential, retail and commercial development that would become the city's 78th neighborhood. Last year, the White Sox proposed a new publicly funded ballpark at The 78, but Springfield lawmakers balked at the idea of contributing a reported $1 billion to build it. The team has not given up on moving in, but building the Fire's new stadium is now job one for the developer, the soccer team and the city. Gensler, which is designing the master plan for The 78, also had a hand in the conceptual White Sox ballpark. The firm has previously designed MLS stadiums in Austin and Los Angeles. The Fire stadium would be built on nine acres at the north end of the site, with riverfront access for game and event days. There will be about 2,000 parking spots available at The 78. Fans also can ride the CTA to the stadium; there's a nearby 'L' station and multiple bus lines. Taking a water taxi is a possibility as well. Dave Baldwin, the Fire's president of business operations, said the stadium would be busy throughout the year, with about 20 Fire soccer matches and a dozen major events each year, including concerts In addition to admission revenues, the Fire intends to sell stadium naming rights, which Baldwin said should fetch in the ballpark of $10 million per year. 'We've already received outreach from several Fortune 500 companies that have called to inquire,' Baldwin said. 'So we'll be very selective who we partner with, but we're excited for that opportunity.'
