Man sets himself on fire on Amsterdam's central Dam Square

Telegraph03-04-2025

A man set himself and his car on fire on Amsterdam 's Dam Square on Thursday, police said.
Images posted by local media and online show a small red car pulling up to the National Monument located near the square's south-eastern corner.
A small explosion followed shortly afterwards, with flames shooting out of the vehicle.
'Camera images show that the fire on the Dam was sparked after an explosion in a car,' Amsterdam police confirmed on X.
'At that moment, there were a lot of people close to the vehicle, but as far as we know, no bystanders were injured,' police added.
Passers-by can be seen scattering, with several police vehicles quickly surrounding the burning car.
The fire was believed to have been deliberately started by the car's driver 'who was injured in the process', police said.
The driver stumbled from the car with his clothes on fire, quickly extinguished by police.
The injured man was taken to hospital and was under police arrest.
He was later identified as a 50-year-old Dutch national from the North Netherlands province. Police did not release his name.
'Detectives are keeping all scenarios open, but have strong suspicions that the man wanted to take his own life. He is suspected of arson,' the police said.
An AFP reporter on the scene saw police and explosives officers probing the burnt-out vehicle, while the square in the heart of the city remained largely cordoned off.
A witness told the local AT5 television station she heard a 'small pop, not even a real explosion' on the square and saw people running away.
'Then suddenly there was a loud bang and lots of black smoke.'
'After that I saw the man. Suddenly he was on fire. It was unreal,' she said.
The latest incident came days after a Ukrainian man last week stabbed five people at random in the streets around the square, located in the heart of the Dutch capital.
Dutch prosecutors said on Tuesday the man 'acted with terrorist' intent.

Cops are understood to have found clothes and animal bones during the extensive search through an area known as Brueckner's "rat run". The search took place around an area of scrubland which is located close to where the British toddler was staying with her parents back in 2007. It was reported that animal bones and adult clothing were the only things unearthed - but no traces could be linked to Madeleine. Wife 'decapitated husband then chopped off his genitals and fed them to dogs'

A 48-year-old woman is accused of chopping off her husband's genitals, strangling him with her bare hands and decapitating him A 48-year-old woman is alleged to have pounced on her husband after a night shift, decapitating him and feeding his genitals to their dogs after years of domestic abuse. The shocking incident is said to have occurred when Maria, a Ukrainian woman, found her husband Oleksandr returning in the early hours after work on August 23, 2019. She is accused of strangling him with her bare hands. Maria was reportedly "covered in blood" according to eyewitnesses. ‌ Police said the incident came after a long period of physical abuse from her husband. Officers said she told them she "was suffering domestic violence for ages and murdered her husband to put an end to it and that it was the only way out". ‌ Maria is alleged to have first strangled her husband before decapitating him by cutting his head of with an axe. She is the alleged to have grabbed a knife from the kitchen, cut off his genitals and fed them to her pet dogs. Maria is then accused of trying to chop the victim's body into pieces but did not succeed and ran out into the street covered in blood. Speaking to local media, Nadezhda Opanasiuk, a neighbor who spotted the accused on the street, said she could not believe what Maria was telling her until she saw the gruesome scene and she admitted to having her husband's head in a sack. Opanasiuk said: "Her hands, feet and clothes were in blood. She said, 'I am in trouble. I've killed my husband.' I did not believe her. I thought they had a quarrel and she might have hit him. I went to see if he needed medical help. When I walked into the room, I saw his mutilated body. The bedsheets were soaked with blood. I asked her, 'Where's his head?', and she replied, 'there, in the sack.'" Opanasiuk alerted the neighbors about it who then called the police. Officers arrived at the scene and took Maria into custody after she confessed to the crime. Confirming the incident, police spokesman Vadim Artiukhovich said, "The suspect confessed in full at the scene. She was charged with murder and taken into custody." He added: "The woman said that she was constantly suffering physical and emotional abuse and did not see any other option to end her misery. "Neighbors say they, in fact, saw the husband beating her up and chasing her with an axe a lot of times. However, the woman has never reported the incidents." However, Maria's son Viktor Fesianov cannot forgive her for what she did. "I know she is my mother. But I do not want to see her any more," he told local media. Maria faces up to 15 years in prison if found guilty. The investigation was ongoing in 2019.
