Man sets himself on fire on Amsterdam's central Dam Square
A man set himself and his car on fire on Amsterdam's Dam Square on Thursday, police said. Images posted by local media and online show a small red car pulling up to the National Monument located near the square's south-eastern corner. A small explosion followed shortly afterwards, with flames shooting out of the vehicle. 'Camera images show that the fire on the Dam was sparked after an explosion in a car,' Amsterdam police confirmed on X. 'At that moment, there were a lot of people close to the vehicle, but as far as we know, no bystanders were injured,' police added. Passers-by can be seen scattering, with several police vehicles quickly surrounding the burning car. The fire was believed to have been deliberately started by the car's driver 'who was injured in the process', police said. The driver stumbled from the car with his clothes on fire, quickly extinguished by police. The injured man was taken to hospital and was under police arrest. He was later identified as a 50-year-old Dutch national from the North Netherlands province. Police did not release his name. 'Detectives are keeping all scenarios open, but have strong suspicions that the man wanted to take his own life. He is suspected of arson,' the police said. An AFP reporter on the scene saw police and explosives officers probing the burnt-out vehicle, while the square in the heart of the city remained largely cordoned off. A witness told the local AT5 television station she heard a 'small pop, not even a real explosion' on the square and saw people running away. 'Then suddenly there was a loud bang and lots of black smoke.' 'After that, I saw the man. Suddenly he was on fire. It was unreal,' she said. The latest incident came days after a Ukrainian man last week stabbed five people at random in the streets around the square, located in the heart of the Dutch capital. Dutch prosecutors said on Tuesday the man 'acted with terrorist' intent. Broaden your horizons with award-winning British journalism. Amsterdam knife attacker was Ukrainian from Donetsk, say police
The man suspected of stabbing five people in the centre of Amsterdam is a 30-year-old Ukrainian national from the eastern Donetsk region largely controlled by Russia, Dutch police say. Officers said they were still unclear about the motive for the attack, near the busy Dam Square on Thursday afternoon. The suspect, who reportedly used multiple knives, was named as Roman D by Dutch media, which had earlier said he was from Eastern Europe. He had false identity papers on him with multiple names when he was arrested, which made it difficult for police to establish who he was. It is unclear whether he is from the Russian-occupied part of Donetsk. Femke Halsema, the mayor of Amsterdam, said: 'The police investigation is in full swing and has full priority at the moment. We hope to get more clarity soon about the background of this horrible stabbing'. The Ukrainian, who police said had checked into an Amsterdam hotel on Wednesday, will be brought before a judge on April 1 to decide on his further detention. Investigations are continuing. He is under strict guard at a prison hospital after suffering injuries to his leg when he was tackled by bystanders, including an unnamed British tourist. He was not questioned immediately after the attack because of his injuries. Footage of the Briton, who has asked not to be named, chasing the suspect was widely shared online. He pinned the suspect down just off Dam Square, kneeling on top of him as he waited for police to arrive. On Friday, Ms Halsema thanked the man for his actions and awarded him the city's heldenspeld – which means hero's badge – for bravery at her official residence. 'He is a very modest British man,' she told the Amsterdam news channel AT5. 'He has no desire to become famous. He is now mainly concerned with the victims, he feels responsible for them.' The victims were a 26-year-old man from Poland, a 73-year-old Belgian woman, a 19-year-old woman from Amsterdam, and two American nationals: a 67-year-old woman and a 69-year-old man. The Polish man had been released from hospital by Friday, while the other victims remained in hospital but in a stable condition, police said. Suspect in Amsterdam stabbing rampage was Ukrainian, police say
The man suspected of stabbing five people in central Amsterdam on Thursday is a 30-year old Ukrainian national from the eastern Donetsk region, local police said on Saturday. The man is suspected of having wounded five random people, using multiple knives, during a stabbing rampage near the busy Dam Square on Thursday afternoon. He was arrested quickly after the incident with the help of bystanders, sustaining an injury to his leg. The man, who police said had checked in to an Amsterdam hotel on Wednesday, will be brought before a judge on April 1 to decide on his further detention. Police on Saturday were still unclear about the motive for the stabbing and said investigations were ongoing. The victims were a 26-year-old man from Poland, a 73-year-old Belgian woman, a 19-year-old woman from Amsterdam and a 67-year-old woman and a 69-year-old man, both American nationals. The Polish man had been released from hospital by Friday, while the other victims were still in hospital but in a stable condition, police said. Meanwhile The Mayor of Amsterdam has given a 'hero's medal' to an English tourist who chased a knifeman through busy alleys and pinned him to the ground, bringing an end to his rampage. Footage shows a man, in casual clothes, kneeling on top of the suspect and threatening to punch him as he waits for police while shoppers file past him near the central Dam's Square on Thursday. In a message on Instagram, Mayor Femke Halsema thanked him for his heroic actions. He received a hero's badge in her official residence, she told reporters. "He is a very modest British man," Halsema told Amsterdam news channel AT5. "He has no desire to become famous. He is now mainly concerned with the victims, he feels responsible for them." She said the man made a decision in 'a split second for which there should be a lot of appreciation'.
