Greenland dream of int'l recognition
The goalposts at Greenland's national soccer stadium in Nuuk are barely visible, buried in 1.5 metres of snow.
The Arctic island's team, embodying national pride and a beacon of hope for international recognition, has relocated to an indoor sports arena for training.
"It's actually quite fun to play football in the snow," says national team captain Karsten Moller Andersen, reminiscing about his childhood in southern Greenland.
With 20 artificial pitches spread across the expansive island, the roughly 5,500 active players can only play outdoors for four months of the year due to the harsh climate.
The national team, comprising students and amateurs with day jobs, gathers every summer in Nuuk for training. They play friendlies against second or third-tier teams from Denmark and last year played a friendly match versus Turkmenistan."We can be quite aggressive when we play; we have this hunger," Andersen explained. "Then outside the pitch, we just have fun and laugh."
Greenland's football association (KAK) has battled funding challenges for years, complicating its efforts to join major soccer organisations like UEFA and FIFA.
The FA is seeking membership of CONCACAF as an alternative path to international competition.
"It would mean a lot to Greenland, because the national pride we have in Greenland is - without it getting too political - something we have a hard time expressing," said FA chief Kenneth Kleist, referring to Greenland's status as part of Denmark.
The FA is endeavouring to secure funding to build airdomes, which would allow year-round soccer.
"My biggest dream is that one day Greenland will finally make it to the international stage, like play a qualification for the World Cup and maybe even qualify for the World Cup," said Patrick Frederiksen, Greenland's co-captain.
This week Greenland are playing a futsal tournament that also includes Iran, Afghanistan and Brazil.
"Now finally we're kind of achieving those dreams, playing against Brazil. This is a huge moment for us," says Frederiksen, wearing their light blue away shirt inspired by Greenland's Ice Sheet. REUTERS

Carlo Ancelotti's debut as coach of Brazil ended in a goalless draw in Ecuador in South American World Cup qualifying on Thursday. But the home side were dealt a blow just before kick-off when goalkeeper Hernan Galindez suffered a muscle strain in the warm-up and replacement Gonzalo Valle was hurriedly sent out to make his debut. If Valle had any nerves they eased when he did well to parry a shot from inside the box from Vinicius Jr. who had been set up by Gerson following a turnover. Chances were limited in a contest where neither side was able to get control of midfield. The pattern continued after the break with Ecuador, missing their injured striker and talisman Enner Valencia, struggling to pose a threat. Real Madrid star Vinicius was quiet for much of the game and with Rodrygo absent, Brazil also lacked potency in attack. The best opening came in the 75th minute when Vinicius broke down the left and cut back to Casemiro.

South Africa name squad for Zimbabwe Test
South Africa have unveiled their squad for the upcoming two-Test series against Zimbabwe, set to begin later this month in Bulawayo. The squad features five uncapped players, with 19-year-old batting sensation Lhuan-dre Pretorius headlining the selection following his breakout performances in domestic cricket. Joining Pretorius in line for a potential Test debut are Dewald Brevis, Lesego Senokwane, Codi Yusuf, and Prenelan Subrayen. The series does not fall under the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27, as Zimbabwe are not part of the current cycle. It will instead serve as a developmental opportunity for head coach Shukri Conrad to test new talent and build squad depth ahead of the 20252027 WTC cycle. With the future in mind, senior players such as Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada have been rested. He finished second in the run charts of the first-class season with 573 runs in 12 innings at an average of 47.75, including two centuries and two half-centuries. Brevis initially rose to prominence as the leading run-scorer in the 2022 ICC Under-19 World Cup. Kwena Maphaka, who made his debut earlier this year against Pakistan, will lead the pace attack alongside Lungi Ngidi. "Nandre has been cleared to play T20s. We'll reintroduce him gradually, starting with the shortest format, before "Nandre has been given the all-clear by the medical team to play T20s. The plan is to ease him back into the game, starting with the shortest format, and then slowly work him up to the longer formats," Conrad said. New Zealand name Walter as new coach in all formats
South African Rob Walter was appointed New Zealand coach in all formats on Friday in the wake of Gary Stead's decision to stand down after seven years in charge. Stead announced on Wednesday that he would be leaving the job of test coach at the end of the month, having already relinquished the short format roles in April. Walter, 49, was most recently coach of South Africa's One-day international and Twenty20 teams but knows New Zealand cricket well after stints in charge of provincial teams as well as his time overseeing a Black Caps "A" tour of India in 2022. "The Black Caps have been a successful and highly-regarded team on the world scene for some time now and it's a real privilege to be given the chance to add to that," Walter said in a New Zealand Cricket statement. "It's an amazing opportunity to work with such a talented group of players and support staff through a period of time in which so many global events, as well as massive bilateral series, will be contested." Walter, who led South Africa to the semi-finals of the 2023 World Cup and final of last year's Twenty20 World Cup, is contracted through to the end of the 2028 World Cup, which New Zealand is co-hosting with Australia. "Rob is a world-class coach with an outstanding pedigree," said NZC chief executive Scott Weenink. "His success in New Zealand's domestic game, combined with his recent achievements on the global stage with South Africa, makes him the ideal candidate to lead the Black Caps." New Zealand's next international matches come in July at the start of their tour of Zimbabwe, where they will play two tests and a Twenty20 tri-series also involving South Africa.
