GB's Tarvet, ranked 719, reaches Wimbledon main draw

BBC News5 hours ago

Britain's world number 719 Oliver Tarvet has reached the Wimbledon singles main draw - which will contain the highest number of home players for 41 years.Tarvet upset Belgian world number 144 Alexander Blockx 6-3 3-6 6-2 6-1 in the final round of qualifying on Thursday. It was the 21-year-old's first time playing a best-of-five match.Tarvet's victory means there will be 23 British players - 11 men and 12 women - in the singles draw when Wimbledon begins on 30 June. That is the most since 1984, when there were nine men and 14 women.
The Englishman, who is from St Albans, competes on the US collegiate circuit and has one year left on his studies at the University of San Diego. Most college sports in America are strictly amateur, so Tarvet will be unable to claim the vast majority of his £66,000 prize money for reaching the Wimbledon first round."There's a lot of emotions, but the the main one is just happiness," Tavert said."Ever since I was a little kid, it's been my dream."Tavert previously defeated top-250 players Terence Atmane of France and Canadian Alexis Galarneau in the first two rounds of qualifying.Earlier on Thursday, British world number 550 Hamish Stewart fell 6-3 4-6 6-3 6-4 to Swiss Leandro Riedi.Emily Appleton also missed out on a main-draw spot, losing 6-2 2-6 6-0 to Veronika Erjavec of Slovenia.
'I might be flying my coach home by private jet'
Tarvet's prize money situation is not unheard of.Last year, Australian Maya Joint forfeited more than $200,000 in prize money, external after reaching the second round of the US Open while still an amateur at the University of Texas.Student-athletes are allowed to claim up to $10,000 per year from any prize money, which goes towards expenses and entrance fees."It's a little bit awkward because I've got to find a lot of expenses and I really want to come back to University of San Diego to complete my fourth year," Tavert said."What they've done for me is just incredible and I'm so grateful. I want to spend my fourth year there and really leave my mark on US history."I can claim up to $10,000 so I might be flying my coach on a private jet at home."
Tavert 'unlikely to change his plans'
Analysis by BBC tennis correspondent Russell Fuller
Qualifying for the main draw of Wimbledon is unlikely to change Tarvet's plans for the year ahead. He is said to be keen to complete his degree and play a final year on the phenomenally competitive US college circuit. He was ranked in the top 5 division one singles players in this year's NCAA Championships, having won 23 of his 25 matches.Tarvet has only played two professional tournaments this year, but won one of them - a $15,000 ITF World Tour event which took place in San Diego. The world number 719 has already accumulated five titles in his very short career - all of which have been on the lowest rung of the professional ladder.$25,000 is the largest prize fund he has ever competed for. The total prize pot at Wimbledon is $73.52 million (£53.5 million).

Wimbledon holder Barbora Krejcikova an injury doubt

The world number 17, who defeated Jasmine Paolini in the women's singles final at SW19 last year, was due to face France's Varvara Gracheva in the quarter-finals at Devonshire Park. Barbora Krejcikova is an injury doubt ahead of her Wimbledon title defence after withdrawing from the Eastbourne Open due to a thigh problem. Czech player Krejcikova initially felt the issue on Wednesday during her second-round victory over Britain's Jodie Burrage. The injury worsened overnight and, with her opening match at Wimbledon scheduled for Tuesday, the 29-year-old is awaiting the outcome of a scan. 'I'm very sorry to have to withdraw from my quarter-final today in Eastbourne as I'm having some soreness in my right thigh,' said Krejcikova. 'Overnight it just didn't get any better; it actually got worse. I think it's better with Wimbledon in the next couple of days just to rest it and to see what's going on and to resolve that.' Krejcikova played two gruelling, three-set singles matches on the south coast. Having saved two match points en route to defeating British number four Harriet Dart in two hours and 40 minutes in round one, the second seed saved three more in her tie-break triumph over Burrage, which lasted two hours and 24 minutes. British singles interest in the tournament ended with quarter-final defeats for Billy Harris and Dan Evans in the men's draw. Read more: Harris was beaten 7-6 (4) 6-1 by French world number 20 Ugo Humbert. Evans, who registered a standout second-round win over world number 13 Tommy Paul on Wednesday, later lost 6-2 6-3 to American lucky loser Jenson Brooksby, who will take on Humbert in the last four. 'It was really difficult conditions; Jenson played a good match, he was probably better than me today,' said Evans. 'It was a very quick turnaround. It was not easy but that's tennis, you have to recover and get back out there. 'I'm not sure what time he finished yesterday but I think it was a lot earlier than me and it just felt all very quick today.' Defending men's champion Taylor Fritz – the American world number five and a three-time Eastbourne winner – overcame compatriot Marcos Giron 7-5 4-6 7-5 in Thursday's final match. The top seed will face sixth-seeded Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who beat 19-year-old world number 17 Jakub Mensik 6-4 7-5, in the last four. Australian 19-year-old Maya Joint backed up her second-round victory over British number one Emma Raducanu by reaching the semi-finals with a 6-4 7-5 success over Russian Anna Blinkova. Former French Open finalist Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova awaits Joint after she beat fellow Russian Kamilla Rakhimova 6-2 2-6 6-0, while 20-year-old Filipino Alexandra Eala will take on Gracheva in the other semi-final following her 6-1 6-2 win over Dayana Yastremska.

Newcastle look to sign ex-Man Utd star as part of stunning £140m triple transfer – but rule out move for Marcus Rashford

NEWCASTLE are ready to launch a fresh raid for Anthony Elanga — as part of a £140million triple swoop. Eddie Howe is ready to pull the trigger on offers for Nottingham Forest winger Elanga, Brighton forward Joao Pedro and Burnley keeper James Trafford. 4 4 SunSport understands the Magpies are ready to bid £50m for Elanga after seeing a £45m offer rejected earlier this week. And they will battle Chelsea for £60m-rated Pedro, while wrapping up £30m Trafford, after June 30. That is when a new window begins for Profit and Sustainability rules — in which Toon may be able to include around £100m in Champions League revenue. Elanga is Howe's top target on the right wing although the club are also exploring other targets in case they fail to land the Swede. Aston Villa 's Jacob Ramsey and Bournemouth 's Antoine Semenyo are also on the radar. Howe is a huge admirer of Pedro and missed out on him three years ago when he was at Watford before eventually landing Alexander Isak, who he now wants the Samba star to help support in attack. Brighton are willing to cash in after he was axed for the last two games of the season by Fabian Hurzeler following a training-ground bust-up with team-mate Jan Paul van Hecke. Newcastle 's players are due to report back for pre-season training on July 7 and Howe, who also ideally wants a new centre-half too, hopes to have at least two new signings on board by then. CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS 4 Newcastle have been linked with a move for Manchester United outcast Marcus Rashford but he is not on the club's list of targets. As for goalkeeper Trafford, the Magpies have got the green light to press ahead and finally get a deal over the line. Christian Norgaard to Arsenal LATEST | Transfers Exposed Burnley announced the £4.3m arrival of German U20 international Max Weiss from Karlsruher on Wednesday, paving the way for Trafford to leave. The 22-year-old was set to move to Tyneside last summer. But that scuppered when Nottingham Forest insisted on Greek goalie Odysseas Vlachodimos going to Newcastle as part of the PSR-pleasing transfer that also saw Elliot Anderson head to the City Ground. Burnley have been quoting a £40m asking price for the 22-year-old, though SunSport understands Toon chiefs are confident a £30m agreement will get it over the line. 4
