SNL Is Stuck in a Creative Rut in Its 50th Season — Can It Be Fixed?
As TVLine's resident Saturday Night Live correspondent, I cover the show each week and keep a running tally of the season's best sketches. But with just three episodes left in the show's landmark 50th season, I'm finding that my list of memorable sketches is shorter than usual.
SNL went all out to celebrate its 50th anniversary with a live three-hour special in February that featured lots of fun cameos and sketches — but the season surrounding that special has been a letdown by comparison. It's almost as if the 50th anniversary has overshadowed the show itself, with the current cast getting pushed aside each week for buzzy cameos from former cast members. And it's not just the cameos: With uninspired writing and a lack of breakout stars, Season 50 has been making more headlines for viral moments like musical guest Morgan Wallen's abrupt exit than for funny sketches.

There's still plenty of talent in the main cast, with Chloe Fineman and Heidi Gardner in particular shining on a regular basis. I like Sarah Sherman's unique brand of weirdness, and Michael Longfellow has a dry wit that isn't utilized enough. But it does feel like SNL is missing a heavy hitter right now, a true breakout star. Bowen Yang and Marcello Hernandez seem to be getting the most screen time this season, but the results have been decidedly mixed. (Hernandez's seductive Domingo is one of the few recurring characters SNL is still attempting.) I usually enjoy Please Don't Destroy's video contributions, too, but they feel sealed off from the rest of the show. SNL's current cast just feels like a grab bag of different comedic styles that aren't meshing together well.
Then there's the Donald Trump problem. SNL trots out James Austin Johnson as Trump nearly every week without fail, but the political sketches feel obligatory at this point, and like preaching to the choir. Johnson's impression is spot-on, to be fair, but the writing just rehashes the same notes over and over. No matter where you fall on the political spectrum, it's boring to watch SNL beat a dead horse each week, and it eats up valuable real estate that could be dedicated to actually innovative sketch comedy.
Now of course, people have been declaring SNL dead almost as long as it's been on the air, and it always manages to find a way to bounce back, so I'm not counting it out entirely. But I can also clearly see that it's flailing right now, and Lorne Michaels isn't getting any younger. Could a fresh voice like Tina Fey (please?) come in and take the reins and guide SNL into a new golden era? I could see it… and I'm rooting for it. SNL's 50th anniversary special reminded us how essential this show has been to American comedy over the past half-century. But it also highlighted how far off the path the show is right now.

‘Devastated' Rod Stewart, 80, cancels more upcoming concerts due to illness
Rod Stewart has canceled several more upcoming concerts for health reasons. The legendary rocker, 80, announced Saturday that he's canceling four shows and postponing two in Nevada and California on his One Last Time Tour this month after being diagnosed with the flu. 'I have to cancel and reschedule my next six concerts in June as I continue to recover from the flu,' Stewart wrote on Instagram. 'So sorry, my friends,' he continued. 'I'm devastated and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience to my fans. I'll be back on stage and will see you soon.' Stewart canceled his planned shows on June 7, 8 and 10 at The Colosseum Theater at Caesars Palace and June 14 at Lake Tahoe Amphitheatre at Caesars Republic in Stateline, Nevada. He rescheduled his concerts on June 12 in Rancho Mirage, Calif. to Sept. 20 and June 15 in Paso Robles, Calif. to Sept. 21. The 'Maggie May' singer already canceled his June 5 show at The Colosseum at Caesar's Palace due to health concerns. 'I'm awfully sorry to have to cancel my show June 5th at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace,' Stewart shared online. 'My doctor ordered a bit more rest while I recover from the flu. Thanks for your love and understanding.' Stewart also bailed on his June 1 scheduled show in Las Vegas hours before he was set to take the stage. 'I am sorry to inform you that I'm not feeling well and my show tonight at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace is being rescheduled to June 10,' he wrote. 'Your tickets will be valid for the new date.' Stewart's next scheduled tour stop is the Glastonbury Festival in England on June 29. He's been tapped for the Teatime Legend slot as one of the oldest artists to ever perform at Glastonbury. However, Stewart's health issues have raised concerns about his involvement in the UK festival, which is being headlined by The 1975, Neil Young and Olivia Rodrigo. In late 2024, Stewart revealed that he was taking a step back from the stage in the coming year. 'This will be the end of large-scale world tours for me, but I have no desire to retire,' he said in a statement on social media. 'I love what I do, and I do what I love.' 'I'm fit, have a full head of hair, and can run 100 meters in 18 seconds at the jolly old age of 79,' he added.

Jessie J has early breast cancer, will have surgery soon
Singer Jessie J has breast cancer. Early breast cancer, mind you, and she's taking care of it as soon as possible. 'I'm highlighting the word 'early,'' she said Tuesday via video on Instagram. 'Cancer sucks in any form, but I'm holding on the word early.'' The 'Bang Bang' artist also joked that it was 'a very dramatic way to get a boob job.' The pop star and coach on the Australian version of 'The Voice' has been undergoing tests in private, she said. In a little less than two weeks, after a radio station-sponsored music mini-festival at Wembley Stadium in London, she will undergo surgery. 'I just want to [exhale] and just let you guys know, it wasn't something I'd planned, but yeah, I'm getting to keep my nipples,' she said. 'That's good. It's a weird topic and a weird situation and I know that the press are gonna say crazy stuff.' It was the expected media attention that held up her announcement for a bit, she said, because she had been going 'back and forth' about whether to reveal her situation, knowing that celebrity outlets were likely to turn 'early' into something much more ominous. She also said she was 'not processing it' because she was working so hard. 'To get diagnosed with this as I'm putting out a song called 'No Secrets,' right before a song called 'Living My Best Life' — which was all pre-planned before I found out about this — I mean you can't make it up,' the 37-year-old marveled. That said, Jessie J is a 'sharer,' she explained, and an 'open book.' Maybe a little too open? 'I am going to disappear for a bit after Summertime Ball to have my surgery, and I will come back with massive t—,' she said on camera, 'and more music.' 'This is a footed compote really meant for candy or fruit, and just take the covers off,' she says in the footage. I have a pair of these and I'm really very fond of them for flower arranging. They stand up off the table and they're pretty.' Martha also shared a tip to ensure your footed compote bowls remain fit for purpose after you get rid of your blooms. 'Protect your containers with a little bit of plastic. If this were silver, the frogs might scratch it, and if it's glass too, a little bit of rust might be left in the bottom of the bowl,' she demonstrates. 'I'm going to use this large spring frog placed right on top of that plastic.' Is this the summer of unconventional vases? With examples from Meghan and Martha to follow, I'm unlikely to go back to a regular flower vessel for the rest of the season.
