Newcastle Knights winger James Schiller attacked online during team's come-from-behind win over Manly
Newcastle Knights winger James Schiller has been subjected to a disgusting online attack during and after his team's thrilling win over Manly.
Schiller, 23, started the match out of position at left centre, and found himself struggling in the first half while trying curb the influence Reuben Garrick and Haumole Olakau'atu.
But after five errors and four missed tackles, he turned it around with a cracking try, a try assist and four line breaks, helping the Knights storm back from 16-0 down to pinch a golden-point win, 26-22.
But while they were staring down the barrel of a ninth loss in 11 games, Knights fans were restless.
They were booing the team at half-time and one fan wrote a vile online message to Schiller.
Schiller later shared the life-threatening message on his Instagram account.
'Count your days c***. I will end your f***ing life,' the person said early in the second half.
Strangely, the person took aim again after the victory.
'Doesn't make up for it even though you won,' the person said.
'Five errors, two penalties, 1 six again and partridge in a pear tree. I hope Dane (Gagai) jams his c*** down your throat and you choke and die.'
Newcastle coach Adam O'Brien admitted afterwards he had been hurt by the response of fans, and claimed the win was the best he had been part of in his five-and-a-half-seasons in Newcastle.
'It's really disappointing,' O'Brien said.
'For people to boo that, they don't know anything about rugby league. And they're probably the ones who cheered at the end.
'The first half we defended our hearts out. There is a really young footy team there against a very good opposition.
'I thought we were excellent in the first half ... I know people are disappointed, but they're trying their backsides off.'
Thursday night marked the seventh time in 14 games this season Newcastle had entered the break scoreless.
Knights great Andrew Johns labelled it 'hard to watch' in the commentary, as Newcastle coughed up error after error.
But they looked a different side after the break, as Dane Gagai turned back the clock and Fletcher Sharpe and Kai Pearce Paul were immense.
Kalyn Ponga also delivered when it mattered most, claiming the match-winning try early in extra time.

Jelena Dokic has showed off her stunning new figure while commentating the French Open men's final and teased an upcoming appearance at Wimbledon. Dokic, 42, was recently back in front of the cameras as part of Channel Nine's sports team covering the French Open. On Monday, Dokic shared several behind-the-scenes snaps while commentating the marathon French Open men's final between Italy's Jannik Sinner and Spain's Carlos Alcaraz. "The loss of an estranged parent comes with a difficult and complicated grief."
