This new cocktail bar in FiDi is an ode to 'Moby-Dick'

You may not be familiar with the name Bryan Schneider, but if you've knocked back a pepperoncini martini at Bad Roman or a handful of Bangkok screwdrivers at Twin Tails, he's certainly treated you to a drink.
Tending bar since 2005, Schneider has shaken and stirred at some of New York's most beloved drinking establishments starting with Daniel, eventually overseeing the aforementioned bars while working as the beverage director of Quality Branded. Like many in the industry (and really, most of us out there), Schnieder always envisioned owning his own bar. But for him, it wasn't a lofty, unobtainable thing. Instead, his vision was a modern, maritime meeting place, ripped from the pages of Herman Leville's classic novel, Moby-Dick.
'While reading the novel a decade ago, I took about ten pages of notes for a Moby-Dick -inspired bar,' Schnieder told Time Out New York, also describing how he was taken by the book's ties to New York and the vivid description of the smoke-laden, whaling tavern in chapter three, named The Spouter Inn. Ten years passed before Schneider serendipitously came upon his prized find, a bar space near the waters of the Hudson River. And so he decided to harpoon his own catch.
Last Friday, Quick Eternity opened its doors at the South Street Seaport in the Financial District, bringing forward Schneider's interpretation of a seaside whaling tavern through a modern lens. The name of the drinking den is drawn directly from chapter 41 of Moby-Dick: '...to chase and point lance at such an apparition as the Sperm Whale was not for mortal man. That to attempt it, would be inevitably to be torn into a quick eternity.'
Less of a dive for weary souls and more of a modern revue to raise spirits, the two-level bar features heavy brick walls, leather-backed chairs and cherry wood tables etched with ivory-like accents.
Above sits The Gam, a private event space that also houses Idler Books, an independent bookstore offering a thoughtfully curated selection of new and used titles—including a collection of vintage editions of the obviously inspiring seafaring classic. Owner Rachel Leal, Schneider's wife, plans to develop literary programming as well, including a reading club that will take a deep dive into, you guessed it, Moby-Dick.
The most eye-catching sight is found behind the bar on the first floor. Beyond the marble counter sits a darkened mural of the whale from the novel. Breaching from the murky sea, the picture is framed by weathered bones seemingly pulled from the beast itself. The maritime mural was commissioned by Tribeca-based artist Azikiwe Mohammed, whom Schneider met while studying art in college.
'For the mural, I gave Azikiwe a particular passage in chapter 3 that describes an oil painting in the entrance to the inn,' said Schneider. 'Azikiwe created his own version of the painting described in that passage.'
Mohammed's touch is felt elsewhere as well. The bar has partnered with New Davonhaime Food Bank, an organization conceived and operated by Mohammed that provides fresh produce and pantry staples to New Yorkers experiencing food insecurity.
As you contemplate your own white whale, you can sip on a menu of cocktails that pull from references and excerpts from the book. The namesake drink of the bar, the Quick Eternity, is a play on a Corpse Reviver #2, made with Perry's Tot Navy-Strength Gin, passionfruit, Lillet, lemon and absinthe. The Rachel (made with Michter's bourbon, Saveiro madeira, lemon and a float Three Valleys red wine) has a double meaning here: it's named after the whaler ship that eventually pulls Ishmael from the water in the novel and Schneider's own wife.
Upgraded tavern fare comes courtesy of chef Antonio Mora. A personal friend of Schneider's, chef Mora (previously of Daniel, Morandi and Quality Meats) has created a New England-accented menu.
The chilled Manhattan clam chowder eats more like a ceviche spun with classic chowder flavors, while the Captain's Crunch is reminiscent of a Frito-Pie that swaps out chips for prawn crisps, yours to shake up with Du Breton pork chili. Filling meals from the gallows include the Gam Burger with charred onions and a 'chaos' sauce, plus corndog-battered lobster tails.
As for desserts, the sticky toffee pudding is drizzled with a Navy-Strength Jamaican rum caramel is a go-to.

But there's naturally a massive twist. ‌ The contestants will be 'dating' in their individual isolated pods, prevented from seeing each other. One participant who's prepared for romance is Northern Ireland-based Billy, reports Belfast Live. Who is Billy Jervis Jr? Billy, aged 35 from Bangor in Northern Ireland, works as an Army Physical Trainer. He's remained single following his divorce five years back and considers today's dating scene a "complete minefield". ‌ Regarding his Love Is Blind journey, Netflix reveals: "He often feels like the third wheel as most of his friends are settled down and as a result, doesn't socialise as much as he used to. Divorce hasn't put Billy off marriage and he's keen to be a husband again and start a family with his life partner." According to his Instagram, Billy works as an instructor for the Royal Army Physical Training Corps, which is tasked with developing and maintaining physical fitness throughout the Army, ensuring troops are properly prepared for military operations. Army career Billy frequently shares glimpses of his life journey on his Instagram account and naturally maintains excellent physical condition due to his profession, regularly posting his training routines. One example is the Murph workout, where Billy revealed he became "emotional" completing it for the first time, adding: "Especially doing it on a baking running track in 25 degrees heat." ‌ The Murph workout involves a 1-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, and then another 1-mile run. In some posts he also displays highlights from his army training. Sharing a handful of photographs in one post, he wrote: "Thank you Matty for an epic hand over take over week with the 1st Battalion The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment." According to the Royal Army Physical Training Corps, Billy's role would encompass "a range of activities", including physical training, exercise rehabilitation, adventurous training and sports coaching and officiating. ‌ The website adds: "Royal Army Physical Training Corps Instructors (RAPTCIs) generally serve as detached personnel within most units across the Army. They are tasked by their Commanding Officers with the responsibility of maintaining the physical fitness of their soldiers in preparation for Military Operations. "This requires a high level of knowledge and experience in order to design and implement a physical training regime which complements the Unit role and training cycle." ‌ Prior to this role, Billy served with the Royal Signals, having penned on Instagram during Armed Forces Day 2023: "Proud to serve my country with the Royal Signals and now the Royal Army Physical Training Corps. It has made me the man I [am] today." King's Coronation During the King's coronation back in 2023, the Royal Army Physical Training Corps took part in the ceremony, participating in the procession. Billy shared a photo on Instagram at the time, writing: "Red jacket season is back, starting with the RAPTC Kings Coronation." Will Billy discover romance in the upcoming series? You'll have to tune in to find out.

Water levels are so low a theatre's boat has had to be winched from a river

A roving theatre group touring the UK by road and waterway have been forced to crane their vintage boat onto dry land for the first time in almost 50 years due to drought. Mikron were unable to continue travelling on the River Thames into Oxfordshire due to low water levels in a year of record-breaking weather that has brought four heatwaves to date. Instead, the intrepid troupe had to hire a crane to lift the narrowboat, Tyseley, out of the river at Reading and transport it to a marina in Calcutt, Warwickshire, three hours away by road. It's the first time since 1976 that Mikron — who play a marathon roster of outdoor shows every summer — have had to lift their temporary home out of the water network due to dry conditions. The interruption came last week as the canal network felt the strain after the earlier heatwaves and one of the driest springs on record. 'It's been nearly five decades since we had to crane the boat out due to drought,' Mikron producer Pete Toon said. 'There's just very little water in the canal network. 'The Canal & River Trust have been brilliant with us as an organisation, but you can't get through if you can't get through. 'In the south, there's been no significant rain for months and we are being told it won't be hours or days to top up these reservoirs, but months. 'We are probably looking at a network that isn't going to be back up on its feet until next spring. And if we have a dry winter, we'll be starting in a worse place than we were this year. 'It's extreme, we've never known anything like this.' Playing 139 shows at unusual venues ranging from pubs to allotments, many of which are 'pay what you feel', the Yorkshire-based troupe were hit by a closure of the canal to navigation at Cropredy, near Banbury. Essentially, the low water levels impact reservoirs feeding the Oxford Canal, leading to locks being shut or restricted. After the Tyseley was taken to the marina, the company has continued the last 10 days of what should have been a water-borne tour by road. The team, including the four cast members, hope to resume their journey on the canal system tomorrow morning. 'We could get on the canal, but we just couldn't go anywhere, so we had to go back to Reading to get craned out,' Pete said. 'It's like taking your caravan to Cornwall and not being able to get on the roads into the county once you're nearly there. 'We are praying that there is enough water in the system so we can get back onto the canal network next week and do what we signed up for. 'Hopefully there'll be enough water in the system to get us to at least north of Worcester.' Mikron, a registered charity, told supporters that it was forced to make the 'difficult decision' of craning the boat out at a cost of £3,144. The fuel and incidental costs of travelling by van are also far greater than the relatively inexpensive canal boat. Overall, it's only the fourth time in the theatre group's 53-year history that Tyseley has been craned out of the water. The award-winning company is currently touring a show about the great British seaside and another about Bletchley Park to spaces including allotments, village halls and pubs. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'There's an irony that at board level we have set up an environment sub-committee and we are probably one of the few charities that has a climate change fund designated in our accounts,' Pete said. 'We are very aware of climate change, as we spend our days in the weather, whether it's cold, raining or hot. 'Another irony is that we have just commissioned another play about water, the ownership and the waste that goes into the network. 'It genuinely looks like if this becomes a pattern, it will change our business model. We won't be able to tour by boat, we'll have to keep going by road.' The Canal & River Trust said the network was 'feeling the strain after one of the driest springs on record and several heatwaves' so far this year. Teams are on the ground carrying out tasks to alleviate the pressures and hydrology experts are planning for a range of scenarios. Matthew Symonds, head of boating & customer service at the charity, said: 'Despite a few heavy downpours recently, we need sustained rain to top up the reservoirs that feed the canals. 'But, as soon as water levels allow, we'll get them back open. 'We know how frustrating navigation restrictions are and we're grateful to boaters for their support and patience. 'It's important to stress that towpaths are still very much open for visitors looking to walk, cycle or simply spend time by the water, as well as plenty of amazing waterside businesses to visit.' More Trending The latest heatwave is expected to register a peak of 34C (93F) today, with amber and yellow health alerts for all of England until Wednesday. Five areas are officially in drought due to the prolonged hot weather, with river flows and water reservoir levels continuing to recede. Do you have a story you would like to share? The twist, however, is that none of these singletons are allowed to know what their future spouse will look like, only getting to see them once they have become engaged. ‌ This year's line-up on Netflix includes a member of Mensa, a professional musician and even a member of the armed forces. One cast member with a particularly intriguing profession is London-based coach Patrick Justus. ‌ What is Patrick Justus' job title? Patrick describes himself as a 'Human Design Coach' which is 'a tool that shows you how your energy is uniquely built to work'. 'Through Human Design, I'll help you restore your vitality, activate your gifts, and turn inner alignment into real-world abundance.' ‌ What courses does Patrick offer? The description reads: 'A body-first transformation guided by your Human Design. Eat, move, and live in a way that unlocks your energy, clarity, and abundance. 'Your energy isn't lazy. It's misaligned. This course + coaching shows you how to eat, train, and live based on your Human Design. For real results. For your body. For life.' ‌ What does 'guided by my spleen' mean? According to Netflix's Tudum: 'Deeply spiritual Patrick is guided by his spleen — yes, you read that correctly. He'll be relying on the organ to let him know if he's met the right woman, even through a wall. 'Patrick ended his longest relationship because he didn't know himself well enough, but after putting in the work and feeling secure about himself once again, love is what he's after.' Will Patrick's spleen lead him to the soulmate of his dreams? We'll have to wait and see. Love Is Blind UK season 2 arrives on Netflix tomorrow, August 13.
