
‘Cañahua chose me': can an ancient relative of quinoa revive rural Bolivia's economy?
'The climate isn't like it used to be,' says Nico Mamani Lima, a farmer and agronomist from Ayo Ayo.
But Mamani and others believe they have found a solution in cañahua, a little-known relative of the Andean staple crop quinoa. Known for its resistance to drought, pests and frost, the plant – what is known as a pseudocereal – is packed with protein and nutrients and grows faster than quinoa.
These characteristics, say farmers and agronomists, could make cañahua important in stemming the tide of migration from Bolivia's countryside.
Bolivia's exodus from the countryside is driven mainly by the climate crisis and regional factors combining to cause dramatic changes in precipitation, with chronic drought interspersed with torrential rains. The high, dry Altiplano is especially sensitive to drought, with once-vast lakes disappearing in its wake; Lake Poopó, once the country's second-largest lake, was officially declared evaporated in 2015.
Many communities are unable to sustain themselves in this less hospitable climate. As rural areas are hollowed out, Bolivia's population has become increasingly concentrated in cities. At least 1.8 million Bolivians live abroad, about 16% of the country's population.
Most of Mamani's childhood friends and classmates have left their home town to live in Chile, Argentina and Brazil, where they work in textile factories or harvesting crops. Mamani is one of only three people of his generation still living in Ayo Ayo.
For those who find work in neighbouring countries, living conditions are difficult. 'They have to work seven days a week and barely get to rest six hours, or sometimes not at all,' says Mamani.
Migration from the countryside also threatens food security and the country's sovereignty. 'The majority of farmers are elderly,' says Jorge Eduardo Jiménez García, who works in cañahua marketing. 'If we think about it, who will grow our food in 10 years?'
To create economic opportunity in rural areas, Mamani founded an association of cañahua producers in Ayo Ayo in 2019, hoping that the crop's adaptability to climate change could provide alternatives to migration.
Though native crops such as cañahua (Chenopodium pallidicaule) and quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) were staples in the Andean highlands in pre-Hispanic times, the arrival of wheat during Spanish colonisation threatened to wipe them out.
'The production of cañahua and quinoa was prohibited,' says Trigidia Jiménez Franco, 58, an agronomist who cultivates the Andean plant on her farm, Granja Samiri.
After Bolivia's independence, farmers continued growing the crop, but it was eaten mainly by those who produced it. When globalisation brought wheat and sugar to rural communities, it was again at risk of disappearing. 'People used to drink pito de cañahua,' says Jiménez, referring to a soft drink made by toasting and grinding the grain. 'It was being replaced by Coca-Cola.'
Recently, cañahua has begun to make a comeback due to its resilience to drought and frost, its faster growth cycle and stable market prices compared with quinoa.
Cañahua 'is shorter in stature, but more resilient', says Jamir Inti Canaviri Jiménez, 29, Jiménez's son and Granja Samiri's production manager. Its high tolerance of salty soils, which are quite common in arid conditions such as the Andean highlands, also means it can thrive where other crops cannot. 'It seems to use salts as essential nutrients,' he says. 'It beats every other crop.'
The plant also tolerates variations in the length of the growing season, which have become more unpredictable with the climate crisis. 'This crop is ancient and highly adaptable,' says Ernesto Huanca Limachi, who leads the Andean Grains Project at the National Institute of Agricultural and Forestry Innovation (INIAF).
Trigidia Jiménez is largely responsible for cañahua's resurgence. Born into a family of wheat farmers, she and her family migrated to the nearby city of Oruro when she was young. After studying agriculture, Jiménez returned to the countryside in 2001. 'As an agronomist, it wasn't my thing to be in an office,' she says.
After her original plans to raise sheep went awry with an early rain season, Jiménez tried growing cañahua on her in-laws' land in Bolivia's western Oruro department. Friends and family members doubted her decision, as it was seen as a food only consumed by rural farmers with little market value. But she followed her gut instinct and now says: 'Cañahua chose me.'

Twenty-four years later, Granja Samiri is Bolivia's largest producer of cañahua. As an agronomist, Jiménez combined scientific and ancestral practices to breed several varieties of seeds and fine-tune organic production methods, improving yields.
Jiménez and Granja Samiri also worked to create a market for cañahua, as the seed was not previously sold commercially. Along with international and Bolivian government partners, she founded the Bolivian National Network of Knowledge and Expertise in Cañahua, which promotes the production and consumption of the crop as well as educating people about the grain.
In recognition of its nutritional value as a 'superfood', it was incorporated into the Bolivian government subsidy packages for prenatal and lactating women.
Granja Samiri now processes cañahua into various finished products, including pito (the toasted and ground form used in drinks), flour and popped cañahua. High-end restaurateurs have begun incorporating it into their dishes, and the Killa artisanal distillery is developing a cañahua whisky.
It has even been included in meals for Nasa astronauts. Granja Samiri is now working on exporting cañahua to other countries in Latin America as well as new markets such as Britain.
Granja Samiri is an intergenerational affair, with Jiménez's adult children and extended family members participating in producing, processing, and commercialising the Andean seed.
Jorge Eduardo Jiménez García, 28, Jímenez's nephew, hopes that cañahua might help other families to build their livelihoods in the countryside. 'We want young people to be able to return to the countryside,' he says, 'because you can also make a living in rural areas.'
In Ayo Ayo, Mamani sees early signs of that vision being possible. When he started the association of cañahua growers in 2019, almost no one was interested, he says. 'Everyone said: 'What good is cañahua?''
Wilmer Quispe Calle, 43, has cultivated cañahua all his life but only recently started selling it after the cañahua growers' association was formed. 'When a frost comes, it kills all the potatoes,' he says. 'Cañahua is resistant: it's affected, but not as much.'
Quispe's children are now studying in La Paz and Brazil, and plan to return to Ayo Ayo after graduation. The long-term economic and social impacts of cañahua in Bolivia remain to be seen, but many who cultivate the seed are hopeful.
'I always have faith in cañahua,' says Canaviri. 'It changed my whole social and economic outlook. That's why it came to this world – to protect food sovereignty.'

A Boeing 787 Dreamliner crash nearly crashed just moments after taking off because of an engine failure. The United Airlines plane took off from Washington Dulles Airport bound for Munich on Friday but was forced to turn around just minutes into the flight. A 'Mayday' was declared by the crew at around 5,000 feet after a malfunction was reported in the aircraft's left engine. The crew on the plane were directed by air traffic control to a holding pattern northwest of Washington so that they could dump fuel. They asked the pilots: 'How long do you expect to hold, fuel, or just get set up there?' The pilot responded: 'We'll have to climb six [thousand feet] and adjust fuel.' The Dreamliner remained at around 6,000 feet for several minutes while it dumped the fuel. The pilot told air traffic control: 'We're dumping fuel at six thousand. We'll let you know when complete.' Luckily, the crew managed to land the plane safely back at Dulles Airport, and no injuries were reported, and all passengers disembarked safely. Because of engine failure, the plane had to be towed off the runway by the ground crew. Flight data shows that the aircraft's left engine failed while it was climbing after it departed. The aircraft is still grounded at the airport while engineers inspect the engine and the damage. Aviation authorities, including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), are expected to investigate the incident. A United Airlines spokesperson told Metro: 'United flight 108 to Munich returned to Washington Dulles shortly after takeoff to address a mechanical issue. 'The plane landed safely, and all passengers deplaned normally at the gate. 'The flight was subsequently cancelled and we arranged alternate travel arrangements to take customers to their destination as soon as possible.' Boeing has been approached for comment. The safety model of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner is currently under scrutiny because of the Air India crash last month. That incident involved both engines failing shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad airport. This type of situation involving orcas has already occurred on other occasions in waters of southern Spain and in Galicia. Earlier this month, wildlife experts confirmed they had spotted Iberian orcas in Cornish waters for the first time. And in July of last year, a Brit yachtsman posted video footage of his boat sinking after it was attacked by orcas. Robert Powell and two others on the Bonhomme William had to be rescued by coastguards after their vessel capsized in the Strait of Gibraltar. Last year, Brit couple Janet Morris, 58, and Stephen Bidwell, 58, from Cambridge, were involved in a whale attack that lasted for an hour. The orcas off the Iberian coast often average between 16ft to 21ft in length. They are considerably smaller than orcas in Antarctica who can reach over 29ft. The attacks tend to happen between May and August but researchers don't believe they are often aggressively commited. Instead, some orcas may disrupt boats out of sheer boredom. Other experts fear that one main culprit may be teaching other orcas how to strike. A majestic beast, named White Gladis, has been terrorising sailors around the coast of Gibraltar over the past four years. Alfredo López Fernandez, a biologist at the University of Aveiro, Portugal, and member of the Atlantic Orca working group believes a 'critical moment of agony' made White Gladis aggressive towards boats. Why do orcas attack boats? WHILE researchers are unsure exactly why killer whales have been attacking boats so often lately, many theories have been put forward. Some experts suggest it could be a playful manifestation of the animals' curiosity. But others fear a "critical moment of agony" such as a collision may have sparked aggression towards boats. Alfredo López Fernandez, a biologist at the University of Aveiro in Portugal, told LiveScience: "That traumatized orca is the one that started this behaviour of physical contact with the boat." Some even speculate White Gladis may now be spurring fellow killer whales on. Orcas are the largest members of the oceanic dolphin family. Although they never attack humans, the apex predators can take down large groups of whales, hence the name killer. What makes them a unique marine mammal is that they often hunt in lethal pods and family groups of up to 40 individuals - and feast on fish, dolphins, seal lions, seals, sharks and stingrays. The carnivores can grow up to 32ft long and weigh up to six tons - and are immediately recognizable by their distinctive black-and-white colouring.

Lavenders grow 'masses of flowers' thanks to expert's one yearly task
Pruning lavender can be confusing - but gardening experts have shared all you need to know about when and how to prune lavender for the best possible results Trimming lavender can be baffling, particularly with so much conflicting guidance out there. Fortunately, horticultural specialists have revealed when and how to trim lavender for optimal outcomes. Morris Hankinson, managing director of Hope Grove Nurseries, explained why lavender plants require trimming. He said: "Unless you are going to treat your lavender plants as a short-term project to be replaced in a few years, you will need to prune them so they thrive. Unpruned lavender plants can quickly become straggly and leggy, liable to sprawl and open up to reveal unsightly gnarled looking branches that bear few flowers. Once this stage is reached they can be very difficult to rejuvenate as they seldom respond to very hard pruning," Morris added. Gardening specialists at Sky Nursery agreed, saying: "Pruning is the only regular care most lavenders will need so your lavender doesn't get too leggy." When to trim lavender Nevertheless, any time after a flower spike has completely bloomed out, it can be cut off at the base where the flower stalk meets the body of the plant. This will encourage robust, healthy growth and maintain the plants in excellent condition. Extra trimming during early spring might prove worthwhile if the shrub has flourished extensively the previous summer. Spanish lavender can be cut back to half its height if you wish to alter the plant's form, reports the Express. English and French lavender types can be trimmed back more severely, to a third of their flowering dimensions. Nevertheless, spring trimming might postpone the plant's blooming period. Lavender struggles to regenerate from aged timber, so avoid cutting old, brown, bare stems - or the plant will perish. Mature, abandoned plants are better off being replaced. Regular annual trimming should help avoid this occurring. What to prune Garden enthusiasts should watch for spent blooms, flower heads that have faded and lost their vibrancy, plus any dead or rotting matter that needs removing. During initial pruning, eliminate any weak or overlapping branches as this helps shape the plant without stems interfering with its natural growing pattern. As a basic principle, the more severely a plant gets trimmed, the more vigorously it will develop and the opposite applies. It's crucial to bear this in mind when cutting plants as it influences their future development. How to trim lavender "If you grow French lavender, prune hard to approximately 23cm - or nine inches - after the first flowering then deadhead throughout the season." For those keen to keep their lavender flourishing, the specialists have a tip: "Being ruthless with your pruning will pay dividends. In fact, cutting the shoots back by a third, or to around 22cm - or nine inches - into the foliage is ideal to encourage masses of flowers." The lavender experts emphasised that even young plants require pruning. They explained: "This slows the growth of the wood at the centre of the plant. However, rather than cutting it, prune it by pinching the tips." When it comes to trimming lavender, experts from garden retailer Thompson and Morgan stressed: "What is critical when pruning, is that you need to cut to just above a group of new shoots. Go any lower and the lavender will die." Post-pruning, green-fingered enthusiasts can propagate new lavender from the clippings. This is an excellent method for replenishing any lavender hedges or specimens that may have underperformed or needed removal.
