Ajay Gupta Shares His Business Journey And Success Secrets

In conversation with the Founder and CEO of Bachpan Play Schools and Academic Heights Public Schools (AHPS), we dug deep into his business journey and success secrets. Ajay Gupta is a prominent figure in the education field in India. He is also the Co-Founder of the first social-impact university in India, Rishihood University, which is well-regarded for providing equal access and opportunities to neurotypical individuals and persons with disabilities (PwDs). This interview contains various lessons every entrepreneur should know. Mr. Ajay Gupta, Founder and CEO of Bachpan Play Schools and Academic Heights Public Schools (AHPS)
Business runs in my family and also in my veins. Therefore, I believe that I was always destined to become an entrepreneur. What's more, attending a great lecture on business in the 11th grade inclined me more towards this area. At the age of sixteen, I started my first business, marking the beginning of my journey. I faced numerous setbacks before finally discovering my calling in the education sector in India; however, entrepreneurship for me has never been about giving up at the first sight of failure. Magic only happens when we persevere like a passionate 'madman', as I also mentioned in my book 'Decoding Business Minds'.
In 2004, we founded our first Bachpan Play School on the franchise model in Ambala, Haryana. The franchise model is one of the most important strategies that helped us scale Bachpan from one center to another until it became a nationally recognized brand within a short period. Having said that, let me tell you that the franchise model by itself does not guarantee success. You have to be transparent, credible, and innovative in your approach to what you are doing. Most of all, you need to be dependable to your franchise partners, whose growth is what becomes your brand expansion, ultimately.
Apart from that, continuous R&D helped enhance our adaptability and flexibility for our franchise partners who came from different regions and backgrounds. It also established Bachpan Play School as one of India's best preschool franchises nationwide, encouraging more and more entrepreneurs to associate with us.
In my experience, any scalable business model is one that is able to grow its customer base, operations, and revenue without incurring increased costs. A strong team and culture, streamlined processes, and a wise integration of technology can greatly help make such a business model sustainable.
The role played by innovation in the growth of my education ventures, particularly Bachpan Play School and Academic Heights Public School (AHPS), has been immense. You must have heard about our Speak-O-Pen, which makes use of nanotechnology to foster learning for kids at home. It is still a favorite among our students even after so many years. We have kept innovating it.
And more recently, we have also launched our SPROUT Curriculum for kids at both Bachpan and AHPS. It is the first curriculum in India that is aligned with NEP 2020 and is very robust. Its innovative SILK activities are so popular that we are even aiming at D2C expansion.
I would like to say that my leadership style is still in the making after so many years of leadership. I am always learning from the best, and more specifically, I am humbly and consciously working on my leadership style to match the style of Ratan Tata Ji. He was my role model and also one of the best leaders in the world. His leadership style is described as visionary, ethical, and people-centric, and so is my aspiration. I hope I am getting closer.
One of the top qualities of an entrepreneur, at least in my eyes, is that they think about the country, too, when they think about the long-term and short-term goals for their startup. So, I would genuinely appreciate it if our aspiring and budding entrepreneurs in India develop this patriotic quality and do their bit for society while making it big for themselves.
Right now, we are streamlining all our efforts at D2C and global expansion. There is so much to do in the education sector even now, especially with emerging fields and technologies such as AI (artificial intelligence), that ideas for entering new sectors and industries are just in the pipeline, and when the right time comes, we will surely let you know.
To be honest, I will do everything all over again. I would repeat every mistake I made, face every setback I faced, and achieve everything once again that I set my sights on. On a personal level, I think I would have tried harder to spend more time with my family, but in my business journey, I don't think I will do anything differently, as everything that I did made me who I am today.
I would urge aspiring entrepreneurs in today's competitive landscape to be patient and persevering. It sometimes takes years of effort to get where you want to be, so you cannot leave your path midway. You can pivot, but you cannot surrender, just too easily. And once again, I would like to repeat that national progress comes before personal profits. If a day comes when you have to choose between the two, your ethics should incline more towards the collective than towards the personal.
We hope that this conversation with one of the best business leaders in India gave you much to learn from. As we reach its end, let's reflect on those learnings as well as Ajay Gupta's ethical leadership, which makes him a distinguished figure in the education sector. He is often recognised as the Franchise Man of India, owing to his prestigious network of 1200+ Bachpan Play Schools and 120+ AHPS schools.

Direct To Consumer: Bachpan Play School's New Expansion Route

In recent decades, D2C (direct-to-consumer) marketing has established itself as a trend with apparel brands and brands dealing with health and wellness, for the most part. However, a new D2C wave seems to be approaching with respect to early learning at home. Indian parents are growing increasingly conscious about value when it comes to their children's education, and with futuristic technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) starting to shape the world, that value-consciousness today calls for innovative solutions. In such a dynamic context, Bachpan Play School, which is a leading preschool brand in India with 1200+ branches nationwide, has been reported to soon extend its innovative educational products and 20 years of legacy into the D2C domain. This makes it important to explore what direct-to-consumer education is and how the D2C preschool model will address the growing concerns of new-age parents of the next-gen leaders. So far, parents have always been on the receiving end of educational products and services offered by schools. In other words, educational products and services are mediated by schools, and while parents are traditionally the primary decision-makers, they are not the direct consumers who have a direct say in what their children are learning. With the emerging D2C preschool model, this is all set to change for 21st-century parents and learners. Direct-to-consumer education is not about e-commerce as much as it is about a subtle shift in pedagogy and educational product designs that changes how learning happens. While the traditional model of schooling hinges on infrastructure and is constrained by location, the D2C preschool model democratizes learning to a further extent, and customized play-based learning kits and even age-appropriate assessments are directly in the hands of parents. It is to be noted that the D2C preschool model gained traction particularly after the COVID-19 era, and it is in its nascent stages in India, adopted mostly among urban and tech-smart parents, who have grown accustomed to homeschooling and digital learning. However, this model is expected to grow in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities where parents have high aspirations but limited access to quality, future-focused education. The D2C preschool model works very much like it does in other industries. It involves reaching the consumers, who are parents and guardians in this context, directly. The Bachpan D2C expansion in India, for example, is aimed at ensuring that some of its most unique and relevant offerings reach every child, irrespective of whether or not they are studying in Bachpan Play School. One of these offerings includes learning kits with DIY activities which parents and children can do together, ensuring both home learning and parental involvement. While traditional pre-schooling still dominates, albeit with advanced learning tools and specialized learning environments, Bachpan Play School is a major traditional player that is set to redefine the preschool space with its D2C offerings. During the initial phase, Ajay Gupta, Founder and CEO of Bachpan Play School , stated it clearly, 'I never wanted to start just one school and change the lives of a limited number of students in a specific area. I always wanted to have multiple schools in multiple locations and change the lives of countless children.' He used the franchise model to achieve this vision, and the Bachpan D2C expansion is said to be a step forward in that vision. The D2C preschool model blurs the line between school and home, and it meets the parents at their doorstep. Bachpan's move signifies a radical shift happening in the preschool space and heralds a new chapter in early childhood education and development. TIME BUSINESS NEWS

AHPS in Focus: Smart Curriculum, Powerful Events, Proven Results

Smart minds rise where learning is bold—curriculum sharp, events unfold, results like gold. Students of AHPS and Bachpan Play School. In Indian classrooms, a significant shift is taking place. The National Curricular Framework (NCF 2023) and the NEP 2020 vision have shaped the smart curriculum, which goes beyond simple academic reform. It's a pledge, a pledge that students between the ages of 3 and 18 will develop through genuine learning, creativity, and curiosity. Learning now feels like it was created for them, not just to support the system, thanks to the 5+3+3+4 structure. This change is complemented by impactful school-led events that make learning real, transforming classrooms into launch pads and ideas into action. Academic Heights Public School's (AHPS) response to what 21st-century learning should look like is the SPROUT Curriculum, which advances this national vision. Many people consider AHPS to be the best CBSE School in India due to its systematic yet adaptable framework supported by research, ensuring skill development that advances through all grades. It is also known for its exciting student initiatives that go beyond the classroom. One of the most well-known is 'Decoding Startups,' an event of significance where students showcase their concepts, get seed money, and take courageous steps to realize their entrepreneurial aspirations. But this is just a part of a bigger picture. Curricula and events are changing all over the nation to emphasize curiosity, creativity, and preparedness for the real world in addition to academics. Deeper engagement, adaptable thinking, and preparing students for life beyond exams are the hallmarks of modern education. The way we raise children today is the first step in shaping the educational landscape of the future. AHPS, a CBSE school with extracurricular activities, is one such institution that is adopting this change. In an exclusive conversation with the Time Business News, Ajay Gupta, CEO of AHPS, shares his insights on the significant impact on academic achievements. He remarks, 'Implementation of smart curriculum, and the kind of exposure our events give to the students, has been fruitful. In addition to improved board results, our students have become sharper and more confident.' As the cornerstones of education that are prepared for the future, smart curricula, thoughtfully organized events, and an emphasis on real-world learning are no longer optional; they are the building blocks of future-ready education. In-depth understanding, more accomplishment, and self-assured learners are the results of a system that dares to challenge traditional methods such as teacher-centric and rote learning. These approaches redefine learning and serve as a reminder that effective education transforms rather than merely informs. TIME BUSINESS NEWS
