Shubhranshu Singh steps down from Tata Motors after four-year tenure

Time of India21-07-2025
Shubhranshu Singh
has exited
Tata Motors
after four years as
Global Chief Marketing Officer
(CMO) for the company's
Commercial Vehicles
(CV) division. His resignation comes at a pivotal time for the company, which is currently undergoing structural reorganisation. The Tata Group is in the process of separating its passenger and commercial vehicle businesses into independent entities. The commercial vehicles division is being transitioned into a new company,
TML Commercial Vehicles Ltd
(TMLCVL).
Though Singh's departure coincides with this shift, no official link has been confirmed between the two developments.
Singh joined Tata Motors at a time when the CV business lacked a formalised marketing structure. He set up the division's first dedicated brand and marketing framework, appointing brand managers with clear mandates. His tenure saw the repositioning of the corporate identity through the 'Better Always' campaign, intended to align the CV business with a renewed strategic direction ahead of its demerger and listing.
He also led the launch of multiple sub-brands, covering both product (EV, lubricants, spares) and non-product offerings (telematics platforms), aiming to broaden the CV business's identity beyond just vehicles.
Digital overhaul and shift to data-driven marketing
One of Singh's most significant contributions was a complete overhaul of the marketing ecosystem. He transitioned Tata Motors CV from traditional, campaign-based activity to an always-on, digital-first model. This included the deployment of a customer data platform, programmatic advertising, multilingual creator networks, and
AI-based personalisation
through Salesforce CRM.
Over 25% of the company's commercial vehicle sales are now attributed to digital channels—an outcome of the integrated digital ecosystem Singh helped build.
EV market entry and thought leadership
Under Singh's leadership, Tata Motors CV launched the Ace EV and Ace Pro EV, becoming an early mover in India's four-wheeler electric cargo segment. These launches were supported by an accompanying brand narrative focused on reliability and future readiness, aimed at building trust among fleet operators and small businesses.
Beyond his corporate responsibilities, Singh is known in the industry for his thought leadership. He has published extensively on
branding
, consumer behaviour, and digital transformation, and regularly speaks at industry conferences. He serves as the only Asia-Pacific representative on the Effie Lions Foundation board, which focuses on mentoring young marketing talent.
In 2025, Singh was recognised by Forbes as one of the World's Most Influential CMOs, citing his data-driven creativity and business impact. He has previously held marketing leadership roles at Royal Enfield (as Global Head of Marketing), Star TV Sports, Visa, Diageo, and Hindustan Unilever.
Tata Motors has not yet announced a replacement for Singh. His next role is expected to be revealed soon.

Tata Motors to acquire Italian CV major Iveco for ₹30,800 crore

Tata Motors Ltd. has signed an agreement to acquire Iveco Group N.V. a European leader in commercial vehicles and mobility, through a subsidiary for ₹38,000 crore ($4.5 billion). Iveco Group Board has recommended Tata Motors' all-cash voluntary tender offer for Iveco Group common shares. This call-cash deal will be funded through a bridge loan to be repaid in four years and Tata Motors has announced to raise €I billion in equity to fund this acquisition, chief financial officer P.B. Balaji told journalists. This will be Tata Motors' biggest acquisition, once complete. In 2008 the company had acquired Jaguar Land Rover for $2.3 billion. Mr. Balaji said this Iveco deal would be one of the top acquisitions of the Tata Group which had earlier acquired Corus and Tetley besides JLR and Daewoo Commercial Vehicles. The completion of the offer is conditional on the separation of Iveco's defence business. Together, Iveco and the commercial vehicle business of Tata Motors will have combined revenue of ₹2,20,000 crore split across Europe, India and the Americas with attractive positions in emerging markets in Asia and Africa. Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata Motors in a statement said, 'This is a logical next step following the demerger of the Tata Motors Commercial Vehicle business and will allow the combined group to compete on a truly global basis with two strategic home markets in India and Europe.' 'The combined group's complementary businesses and greater reach will enhance our ability to invest boldly. I look forward to securing the necessary approvals and concluding the transaction in the coming months,' he said. Suzanne Heywood, Chair of Iveco Group said this this strategically significant combination brings together two businesses with a shared vision for sustainable mobility. 'Moreover, the reinforced prospects of the new combination are strongly positive in terms of the security of employment and industrial footprint of Iveco Group as a whole,' he added. Girish Wagh, Executive Director of Tata Motors said, 'This combination is a strategic leap forward in our ambition to build a future-ready commercial vehicle ecosystem. Together, we are shaping a resilient and agile enterprise, equipped to lead in times of transformative change.' Tata Motors has offered to acquire 100% of Iveco's common shares with a subsequent delisting of Iveco Group from Euronext Milan. Tata Motors will be able to achieve full ownership of Iveco through a pre-agreed transaction upon reaching 80% in the Offer. Upon successful completion of the offer, it is envisaged that two members of the Iveco Board will serve as independent board members and will monitor compliance with, amongst other things, the Non-Financial Covenants (NFC). The Iveco Board will continue to drive decisions for long-term growth and maintaining the competitiveness of the business. Tata Motors will remain committed to respecting and maintaining Iveco Group's corporate identity, integrity, core values, and culture as well as Iveco's key brands, trademarks, and logos. Iveco Group's headquarters will remain in Turin, Italy. Tata Motors will be committed to the long-term development of the combined group and will not implement any material restructurings or close any plants or factories owned or used by Iveco Group as a direct consequence of the combination and, in any case, during the period of the NFC. It will respect the existing rights and benefits of the employees of Iveco Group, including those outlined in the relevant employment and pension agreements and plans as well as existing arrangements with employee representative bodies. Iveco Group, together with its subsidiaries, will continue to have its own operating and reporting structure, with the Iveco Board managing the Iveco Group and its businesses. The Board of Iveco will continue to drive decisions for long-term growth and the competitiveness of the business. The deal is expected to close in Q2 2026. With Iveco in its fold, Tata Motors will now be a global commercial vehicles player and compete with Volvo and Daimler.

Responding to a written question, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh also stated that the number of countries eligible for India's e-visa programme has expanded from 171 in 2020 to 181 in 2025. In reply to queries about e-visa issuance and the widening of eligibility over the last five years, Singh noted, 'Total number of e-visas granted from 2020 to 20.07.2025 is 96,44,567.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also shared information on India's assistance to international pilgrims, including those travelling for Hajj and Sikh pilgrims using the Kartarpur Corridor. 'Each year, the Saudi authorities announce a Hajj quota for India. In recent years, this quota has, on average, been set at 1,75,025 Indian pilgrims,' the minister stated. On the status of the Kartarpur Corridor, Singh said, 'Since its inauguration, the corridor has been used by over 4,00,000 pilgrims to visit the holy Gurdwara in Pakistan.' However, he clarified that 'Kartarpur Corridor operations have been suspended since Operation Sindoor.' He added that under the 1974 India-Pakistan Protocol on Visits to Religious Shrines, both countries facilitate pilgrim visits across the border. Singh recalled the bilateral agreement signed on October 24, 2019, to operationalise the Kartarpur Corridor in time for the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. 'An agreement between the Government of the Republic of India and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan for the facilitation of pilgrims to visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur, Narowal, Pakistan, was signed on 24 October, 2019, in order to fulfil the long-standing demand of pilgrims for easy and smooth access to the holy Gurdwara and to operationalise the corridor for the 550th Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji,' he said. In another response, the MEA was asked to provide data on Indian labourers employed overseas in construction and other labour-intensive sectors. 'As per available data, a total of 16,06,964 Indian workers (including those engaged in construction/labour-intensive works) holding Emigration Check Required (ECR) category passports have been issued Emigration Clearance (EC) for employment in ECR countries during the last five years from January 2020 to 30 June, 2025,' Singh said. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The ministry also addressed a query on whether the government had conducted any classification of the Indian diaspora based on skill sets, disciplines, or subject areas. Singh explained that the government maintains country-wise data on the diaspora, categorised into Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), and Indian students abroad. 'As of January 2025, there are 17.17 million NRIs and 17.18 million PIOs residing across the world, including 1.88 million Indian students studying abroad,' he stated. However, he clarified, 'The Government has not carried out any exercise to categorise the Indian diaspora on the basis of their discipline/subject expertise or to map their skill sets.' Iveco deal: Here's how Tata Motors plans to fund the acquisition

Tata Motors on Thursday announced plans to raise around 1 billion euro (approximately $1.14 billion or Rs 10,000 crore) in equity to help repay the loan used for its 3.8 billion euro (Rs 38,000 crore) acquisition of Iveco's trucks and bus business. The company also hinted at the possibility of launching Iveco vehicles in India and Tata vehicles in markets where Iveco has a strong presence. The proposed acquisition — Tata Motors' largest since its $2.3 billion purchase of Jaguar Land Rover in 2008 — excludes Iveco's defence operations. It will be funded initially through a 3.8 billion euro bridge loan committed by Morgan Stanley and MUFG. Tata Motors aims to repay the debt over four years, using a mix of internal cash flows, proceeds from a potential 1 billion euro equity raise (via rights issue or QIP) and monetisation of its stake in Tata Capital. 'We plan to refinance the bridge loan with a mix of long-term debt and equity within 12 to 18 months after the deal closes,' PB Balaji, CFO of Tata Motors, said in a conference call. 'We are targeting to repay the entire acquisition debt over a four-year period.' Tata Motors expects the deal to be earnings accretive from the second year onwards, driven by cost synergies and the relatively low acquisition multiple. Tata Motors Executive Director Girish Wagh said the product portfolios of Tata Motors and Iveco complement each other in both pricing and capability. 'Iveco brings strong technology in areas like powertrain electrification, hydrogen and ADAS. Combined with our frugal engineering and design-to-value strengths, we see strong competitive advantages emerging,' Wagh said. He said revenue synergies could come from launching Iveco products in India and Tata vehicles in regions like Latin America where Iveco is established. However, he clarified that the Iveco brand, operations, and distribution channels would continue to operate independently post-acquisition. Tata Motors was in talks with Iveco for the last six months. Once completed, the acquisition will give Tata Motors access not only to new products, platforms, and manufacturing facilities but also to a well-established sales and after-sales network — not just in Europe, but also in Latin America, which typically takes years to build, noted Wagh. 'We'll also gain access to strong retail financing capabilities in several of these markets,' he said. Iveco has over 32,000 employees globally as of December 2024, excluding defence and discontinued operations.
