Stunning European island beats Caribbean for having world's best beach

Daily Mirror11-06-2025
Famed for its pastel pink sand and crystal-clear waters, it's hard to believe that the world's best beach is only four hours from the UK - and you can grab return flights in July for just £80
You don't need to jet over to the other side of the world to find sugar-like sand and crystal-clear waters. In fact, the best beach is much closer to the UK than you'd think.
Earlier this year, review site Tripadvisor revealed its Travellers Choice Awards after analysing more than eight million listings over a 12-month period. It found that nothing could quite compare to the idyllic Elafonissi Beach, located on the Greek island of Crete.

Famed for its pastel pink sand (believed to be caused by tiny fragments of seashells) and cobalt waters, Elafonissi Beach outranked dream Caribbean destinations such as Eagle Beach in Aruba and Playa Varadero in Cuba. The stunning beach, which is part of a protected nature reserve, looks like something straight out of a postcard - and makes for the perfect Instagram snap.

Whether you want to spend the day basking under the sun with a good book, or prefer to cool yourself in the shallow lagoon - this beach really does offer something for everyone. Surrounded by a lush forest of cedar trees, the coastline is also a great spot for hikers and nature lovers alike.
"This place is not overrated!" hailed one traveller who visited the beach back in April. "It's a short walk to get to this superb beach [from the car park] and it's quite special because of its many lagoons. A real little jewel! The water is super transparent and turquoise."
Another person agreed, branding the beach 'wonderful'. It's the best beach I have seen," they wrote. "[The] water is very clean and fantastic for children. I want to come back there every year." A third added: "I'm in love with this place - it's one of my favourites. I recommend it to all the people who want to visit... the water was amazing."
Of course, even the world's best beach can't impress everybody - and Elafonisi has garnered some negative attention, mainly around its €5 car park. "Can't get anywhere near the beach!" moaned one traveller, who dubbed the high parking fee a 'tourist scam'.

Another agreed, scathing: "When we went to Elafonisi the water was not crystal clear (it was actually impossible to see the ground), and the sand was not pink. There was a crazy [amount of] people and when we came there all the sun beds and parasols had been occupied."
Kristen Dalton of Tripadvisor hailed its Travellers' Choice Awards for reflecting the voices of 'millions of global travellers' and helping guide people to plan their 'best trip yet'. "In my family, beaches aren't just for sunbathing - we like to get out and explore!" she added.

"The diversity of this year's winners really showcases everything that a beach trip can have to offer. Whether it's strolling the beautiful pink sand beaches of our world winner, Elafonissi beach, in Greece, experiencing breath-taking vistas in Indonesia, whale watching in Hawaii or diving in magical bioluminescent waters in Thailand - there really is something for everyone."
If you're keen to check the beach out this year, you can fly to Crete directly from most major UK airports - including Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle, Bristol, and Bournemouth. If you're flexible with dates, you can grab return fares for as little as £80 in July.

Accommodation on the island is equally affordable, with plenty of hostels and no-thrill hotels to meet the tightest of budgets. For example, a week's stay (Monday, July 7-14) at Studio Peacock will only set you back £215. This is based on two adults sharing a double bed in a one-bedroom apartment.
However, if you're after something a little more luxurious, you have to check out Naiades Boutique Hotel. Located right on the beachfront, this adults-only resort is the epitome of chic and comes with free breakfast every morning. A Deluxe Suite with your own outdoor jacuzzi costs £1,563 on the exact same dates.

'Dirtiest' beach in UK tourists claim is covered in 'human faeces and broken glass'

A day out at the beach is meant to be fun for the family - but it's not always the case. A trip to the seaside is a beloved activity during the summer holidays in the UK. It is meant to be a fun day trip with your friends and family, away from the stress of day-to-day life. ‌ However, some coastal destinations are failing to meet expectations, with holidaymakers raising concerns about rubbish problems. And fresh research from plastic waste specialists at has identified the most litter-plagued beaches across the UK. ‌ The bay ranked the 'dirtiest' in the UK was blasted for having "dog waste and human waste" strewn across the sand, with broken glass thrown in for good measure. ‌ Skegness Beach in Lincolnshire took the unwelcome top spot in the rankings. It was closely followed by Margate Main Sands and Formby Beach in Merseyside, reports the Express. The specialists examined TripAdvisor reviews to establish how many referenced rubbish on the shoreline. And the results were not pretty for Skegness. One review from June 2025 read: "Avoid the grass dunes between the car park and the beach. Not only do you have to dodge the dog waste, you also have to [avoid] human waste and serviettes covered in faeces, left for you to tread in." Another holidaymaker complained: "Unfortunately, on the walk down the beach, we passed a lot of trash, dirty Nappies and baby wipes strewn about the place in one area, and broken glass." Nevertheless, it's not entirely bleak, with numerous tourists posting favourable experiences on TripAdvisor. Despite some likening Skegness to North Korea and Syria as the worst place to visit, it remains a favoured spot for many British families. ‌ A review published in May 2025 reads: "Skegness is a proper seaside resort. It has everything that you expect from a trip to the coast and a lot more besides. From the iconic Clock Tower to its many attractions. "But for us the best part was the beach, immaculate golden sands with plenty of places to buy ice cream, fresh food and drinks (including beer and wine). Well done Skeggy!!! p.s. The Blue Fin Fish Bar serves battered fish that is phenomenal." ‌ Holidaymakers flocking to Margate Main Sands have raised similar issues to those in Skegness, with reviews mentioning broken glass, dog mess, and human waste. While Formby Beach has generally received favourable reviews, a number of visitors mention litter strewn across the sand. One tourist moaned that they found the car park completely full by 10.30am and the beach already heaving with people and covered in rubbish. ‌ Many other seaside visitors commented on abandoned picnics, dumped disposable barbecues littering the coastline, and even finding drug paraphernalia. Graham Matthews, plastic waste expert at says: "Litter on the UK's beaches turns our natural beauty spots into an eyesore and poses a huge environmental threat to marine life. ‌ "Each year, as the weather heats up, we see a sharp rise in people flocking to the seaside, but sadly, many don't clean up after themselves. It's common to find food packaging, disposable BBQs, and even human and animal waste scattered across our shores. "All this unsightly litter ruins the enjoyment of our beaches, but it also threatens local wildlife. Plastic is a particularly major hazard as it takes so long to break down naturally. Initially, this litter can endanger wildlife, entangle animals or be ingested. "However, over time, plastic breaks down into smaller particles known as microplastics that find their way into water, sea life, and even our food chain." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Stunning Welsh railway journey named among best attractions on the planet

This scenic railway journey through the Cambrian Mountains has been named in the top ten percent of attractions worldwide in the 2025 Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice Awards A breathtaking railway journey in Wales has been hailed as one of the world's top tourist attractions. The Vale of Rheidol Railway in Ceredigion has earned global acclaim, landing a spot in the top ten percent of attractions worldwide in the 2025 TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice Awards, which are entirely based on visitor reviews and ratings over a 12-month period. ‌ The scenic trip begins at Aberystwyth and takes passengers deep into the heart of the Cambrian Mountains, ending at the iconic Devil's Bridge. This Welsh gem is actually three bridges built atop each other, towering over the Mynach and Rheidol streams. ‌ The railway itself boasts a rich history, having been in operation for over 120 years since its opening in 1902. Initially built to serve local communities and transport goods like lead and timber, it now enjoys a reputation as one of the most picturesque railway journeys for all ages, reports Wales Online. Meanwhile, a warning has been issued to Brit tourists planning all-inclusive holidays to Spain. ‌ The line spans a modest 12 miles and it takes about an hour to reach Devil's Bridge. Once there, you can enjoy a snack or a hearty meal and a pint at the Hafod Hotel, which offers stunning views of the valley below from its seating area. Visitors can then embark on two different walks: a brief stroll beneath the bridges offering the chance to witness the cascading water up close, and a lengthier, more challenging trek deep into the Rheidol gorge where spectacular views of the 300ft Mynach waterfalls await. The Travellers' Choice Awards rely on authentic feedback, with only a limited number of attractions earning this prestigious recognition annually. "Being recognised by the people who travel with us is what means the most," said Llyr ap Iolo, general manager of the Vale of Rheidol Railway. "Whether it's their first visit or their fiftieth, we aim to make the experience special every time. This award reflects the hard work and passion of our staff and volunteers, and we are proud to share it with them." The Vale of Rheidol Railway boasts an exceptionally impressive TripAdvisor rating of 4.6 out of five stars, based on nearly 1,400 reviews. One traveller declared he was "absolutely amazed at how good it is", whilst another described it as a "lovely experience with incredible views". A recent visitor penned: "Absolutely wonderful experience on this railway. We paid a little extra to travel first class and it was well worth it. Travelling in a 1920s cabin was so nostalgic and humbling. The station was immaculate in every way. Even the WCs were immensely clean. The pride the staff took in every aspect of the train itself was clear to see - even the chimney on the engine was gleaming." Another visitor gushed: "A brilliant afternoon spent on this quaint steam train. From start to finish, spectacular views. Devil'ls Bridge was excellent along with the Devil's Punch bowl. The museum entry which comes with the train tickets was very good. A must do activity if you're in Aberystwyth."
