This program offers additional safeguards against unauthorized account access, helping to ensure that common threats or simple oversights don't compromise a user's Google account. To offer these high-risk users even greater security, Google is now integrating Advanced Protection directly into Android 16, providing Android users with a simple, one-click solution to bolster their security profile.
Back in October, we discovered the first clues that Google will be integrating an Advanced Protection Mode into Android 16. We've since documented how the new mode will enable several device-level security features, like disabling sideloading, blocking USB data access, turning off 2G and WEP connections, and more. Today, during The Android Show: I/O Edition, Google formally announced the new mode, detailing the security features it will enable. Here's what you need to know about Advanced Protection in Android 16.
What is Advanced Protection in Android 16?
Advanced Protection is a security mode as well as an API (application programming interface). As a security mode, Advanced Protection 'ensures all of Android's highest security features are enabled and are seamlessly working together to safeguard you against online attacks, harmful apps, and data risks.' It 'activates a powerful array of security features, combining new capabilities with pre-existing ones that have earned top ratings in security comparison, all designed to protect your device across several critical areas.'
In other words, Advanced Protection is a mode you can enable to make your Android device more secure. When enabled, it toggles various security features within the OS and first-party Google apps to protect against threats from malicious third-party apps, external attackers, and harmful websites. The Advanced Protection API also allows third-party apps to check if the mode is active and enable their own security measures, further enhancing your security when using them.
How do I enable Advanced Protection in Android 16?
Advanced Protection is an optional security mode that Google designed to provide best-in-class protection with a 'user-friendly and low-friction experience.' 'Low' doesn't mean 'none,' which is why Advanced Protection is disabled by default in Android.
To enable Advanced Protection, you must have an Android phone or tablet running Android 16. Then, simply open the Settings app, find Google settings, and look for the Advanced Protection page under the Personal & device safety category, as shown below. Finally, toggle 'device protection' to enable the Advanced Protection mode on your Android device. You can also tap 'account protection' to open the enrollment page for Google's Advanced Protection Program, which you should enroll in if you want to safeguard your Google account.

What security features does Advanced Protection enable in Android 16?
Here is a list of every security feature that Advanced Protection enables in Android 16: Security Investigation Intrusion Logging : Powerful, privacy-preserving logging feature maintains your privacy while allowing for in-depth security investigations and analysis of your device if a compromise is ever suspected. Security logs are securely stored in the cloud using end-to-end encryption, putting you in control of your security information. (Coming later this year. Device Safety : Protects during theft, confiscation, or USB transfer Theft Detection Lock : Your device will automatically lock itself if it detects suspicious activity indicative of theft. (Theft Detection Lock is part of Android's theft protection suite, which you can read more about here.) Offline Device Lock : Your unlocked device will automatically lock itself if it goes offline for prolonged periods. (Offline Device Lock is also part of Android's existing theft protection suite.) Inactivity Reboot : Will automatically restart your device if locked for 72 hours. This process will make user data unreadable until a fresh unlock takes place, ensuring your information remains protected. (You can read more about why Inactivity Reboot is necessary here.) USB Protection : Prevent physical attacks attempting to exploit the USB port by defaulting to charging only for any new USB connection while the device is locked. You may recognize some or many of these features. That's because many of them already exist on Android. Advanced Protection simply turns them on and prevents them from being disabled individually. This means if you want to improve your phone's security but, for example, still occasionally need to install an app from outside the Google Play Store, you'll face a choice: either temporarily disable Advanced Protection to do so, or manually configure all the other safeguards, leaving out only the one you need to bypass for that specific task. A crucial reminder: never disable any of these settings based on advice from a stranger, especially one you don't trust.
As I mentioned before, Android 16 also provides an API that apps can use to detect whether Advanced Protection is enabled. If it is, then they can enable their own security features on top of everything listed above. Consequently, the range of security features activated through Advanced Protection is set to expand as more third-party apps adopt this API.

Google announced a multiyear deal with NBA star Steph Curry on Wednesday at its Made by Google event. As part of the deal, Curry will use AI from Google's Cloud to get better at the game he's played for years. And while I respect Curry landing this gig, no one can convince me that AI knows ball. Let's start with the idea that 11-time All-Star, 4-time NBA Champ and 2-time Scoring Champ (to name a few of his accolades) Stephen Curry knows less about basketball than Google's AI. That's absurd. Did you see those awards? Curry is one of the most dominant players of this generation, hands down. Google thinks it can help Curry improve his shooting and workout plans through its AI Basketball Coach. The "coach" will analyze Curry's form and give him feedback. "He'll utilize our AI Basketball Coach experience, which incorporates Gemini models on Vertex AI and MediaPipe to provide detailed form analysis, visual feedback and personalized coaching tips," Google wrote in a blog post. Again, absurd. Curry and the Golden State Warriors didn't win the championship this past year, but he still led the league in average 3-point field goals made per game and free-throw shooting percentage, shooting 93.3% from the line. So if there's one thing Curry knows how to do, it's shoot the ball. What's the AI going to tell him? Keep doing exactly what you're doing? Stellar advice. According to Google, the coach films some of your jumpshots, analyzes things like ball trajectory and outcome, and then gives you feedback on how to improve. Maybe this could help your jumpshot, but it can't give you coaching tips on any other aspect of the game. The AI doesn't touch on defense, ball handling or anything else. Does the AI know what to do when someone like 7'3" Victor Wembanyama has their hand in your face? Maybe it tells you to shoot the ball into outer space and hope for the best. What about when you're going up against Domantas Sabonis for a rebound? Does the AI know how to stop the monster that is Nikola Jokic, who was one of the league leaders last season in points made per game, assists, rebounds and steals? No, but Jokic loves his horses, so maybe if you ask him about them, he'll be distracted. Google's AI can't help in these scenarios because it's just supposed to help you learn how to improve your jumpshot. That's a nice tool to have, but when you play against someone like Lebron James, you're going to need a whole lot more than that to win. Maybe Google's AI basketball coach can help teach someone how to shoot the ball, but that's about it. And even then, the best way to learn how to shoot is to get out there and play. Google almost got it right with the first Pixel Fold. As Google unveils its latest foldable, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, at this year's Made by Google event, I keep thinking about the original Pixel Fold. Released in 2023, it was far from a perfect phone. It was underpowered, had a thick inner bezel and couldn't open completely flat. Even then, it was a beautiful device with a shiny stainless steel chassis that felt substantial in the hand. Not only that, it was wide. The passport-like form factor made it squat in comparison to slab-style iPhones and Galaxys, but when opened up, it had an almost TV-like 17:9 aspect ratio. Then, with the Pixel 9 Pro Fold the following year, Google threw out the Moleskine for Galaxy Z Fold-style safety. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold axed its predecessor's passport-like form factor for a slab that happened to fold open. Literally, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold had the same outer screen aspect ratio as the Pixel 9 Pro. Here, Google was folding (no pun intended) to industry trends, following similar form factors of the Galaxy Z Fold 6, OnePlus Open, Xiaomi's MIX Fold 4 and others. Apart from the first Pixel Fold, the only other phone to go squat and wide was the first Oppo Find N from 2021. YouTuber Marques Brownlee went so far as to call it the best folding phone, in terms of form factor. Since then, Oppo dropped the passport for a folding slab, as can be seen with the Oppo Find N5. Why all foldables look the same A major reason all foldable phone makers have adopted a similar form factor is app support. The outer display on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 has a more typical slab phone aspect ratio, meaning apps better conform to its standard smartphone-like screen. And when opened, loading up two apps side-by-side fits well on what's essentially a long rectangle. "That's what led us to say, 'Hey, we need to make this a phone first in terms of design,'" Claude Zellweger, Google's director of industrial design, said in a 2024 blog post about the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. The other issue is Android's limited app support for tablets. The iPad, which has strong support from Apple, sells well and gets plenty of app updates to support its wider form factor. The same can't be said for Android tablets. Many Android apps aren't optimized for wider tablet aspect ratios. It's a recurring complaint from fans and tech columnists. It doesn't help that Google hasn't put in a strong effort in the tablet space either, with the company axing its Pixel Tablet line after just one attempt. So, when you tried to run Reddit or some other popular third-party apps on the Pixel Fold's wide screen, the app would have black bars on both sides, essentially running in the same aspect ratio as a typical phone. This problem persists on taller foldables as well; it just isn't as prominent. Who'll make a foldable that gets it right? Despite the anemic support for tablet apps, I'd love to see a foldable phone with the measurements of the Microsoft Surface Duo. Released in 2020, it was a half-step toward what foldable phones are today. Instead of having a foldable inner display, it was two screens bisected by a hinge. It really felt like holding a metal and glass Moleskine notebook. The inner two displays on the Surface Duo had a 4:3 aspect ratio, which is also square-like. This is largely due to its chunky inner bezels. Foldable screen tech has come a long way since. Assuming Microsoft were to make a true foldable in 2025 with minimal bezels, the inner display could have a wide 24:9 aspect ratio. It would be a beastly device for watching YouTube, Netflix or playing games. And rotating it would feed my eyes an endless scroll of Instagram Reels brainrot. The likelihood of any foldable phone-maker bisecting a 16:9 or 21:9 screen is slim. Honestly, if any phone-maker could do something so daring, it'd be Apple. Rumors have been floating for some time that Apple is working on a clamshell-like foldable for 2027. If Apple does decide to jump into the world of book-style foldables, thanks to the iPad, a wide foldable iPhone would be ready to go without the need for developers to massively overhaul their apps. Assuming Apple does do a squat and wide foldable, that move would likely prompt the rest of the smartphone market to (again, I apologize for the pun), fold.

Apple loomed large at Google's NYC event. At "Made By Google 2025," the company debuted its Pixel 10 and Pixel Watch 4. It also took several shots at Apple, with apparent references to the rival's AI delays, iPhone camera quality, and the green vs. blue text bubble debate. The event began with a conversation between host Jimmy Fallon and Rick Osterloh, Google's SVP of platforms and devices. Fallon asked about AI for phones — and Osterloh took a quick dig at Apple in his response. "There has been a lot of hype about this, and frankly, a lot of broken promises too, but Gemini is the real deal," Osterloh said. At the 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple announced the integration of Apple Intelligence, its AI suite, into Siri. Apple formally delayed the AI update in March — a rare move for the tech giant — saying it needed more time to get it right. Google recently teased the delay in an ad for the Pixel 10. "If you buy a new phone because of a feature that's 'coming soon,' but it's been 'coming soon' for a full year, you could change your definition of 'soon' — or you could just change your phone," the ad's narrator said. In his conversation with Osterloh, Fallon also brought up a poster showing a Reddit comment. The comment ended with, "iPhones don't take the best pics." The crowd cheered, and Osterloh laughed, saying, "We hear that a lot." Neither Google nor Apple responded to requests for comment. Next, Fallon spoke with Adrienne Lofton, Google's VP of marketing. Lofton referenced the idea of " walled gardens" — a frequent criticism of Apple's various controls over its iOS platform. (Apple has previously said its platform approach for iOS allows the company to ensure high quality and device security.) "Some companies build their phones to lock you in, and force you to use their devices in only one way," Lofton said. "It seems like that way sometimes doesn't work exactly as you expect or as you need." Loften called Android the "most open platform that's built for freedom of choice." She later referenced a long-running feud between Google and Apple: the green and blue texting bubbles. For years, texting with an Android brought grainy photos and group chat struggles. In 2022, Google began the #getthemessage social campaign. "Texting between iPhone and Android is broken. It's time for Apple to fix green and blue bubbles, and texting for everyone," read the campaign, which pushed for Apple to adopt a messaging protocol called RCS. In 2024, Apple introduced RCS support. The feature stopped compressing photos and videos, and allowed for read receipts and emoji reactions that weren't spelled out — but texts were still green. "The Green/Blue bubble battle is silly, and it's tired, and at Google, we're done with that conversation," Loften said at the announcement. Most of Google's digs at Apple did not directly name the company. At one point, though, Loften said that the Pixel Snap "works perfectly fine with Apple MagSafe accessories." "You said the A-word. Can we talk about Apple?" Fallon asked. "At Pixel, we are confident in our product, and in our brand, and we love everybody in the game, so we can say anyone's name we want on this stage," Loften responded.
