Kolkata: The dismantling of Kolkata airport's former domestic terminal, inactive since 2013 following the launch of the new integrated terminal, will commence after Haj flights conclude this July.
The demolition, including the air traffic surveillance building, is essential for the airport's future expansion plans.
The passenger terminal was used for multiple purposes since it was decommissioned over a decade ago. During the pandemic, a section of the terminal was converted into a quarantine centre. An RT-PCR testing facility operated out of the building in 2020-22 when the tests became mandatory for international travellers flying into Kolkata.
The terminal was also used to conduct Haj flights during the annual pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia.
The contract for auctioning the material retrieved from the demolished building was handed over to public sector undertaking MSTC Ltd. The demolition is expected to be completed by the end of this year or early next year. A new U-shaped passenger terminal, initially proposed to be used exclusively for international flights, will be constructed in place of the old terminal.

A wall has already been constructed to segregate the old domestic airport terminal from the apron area, facilitating the demolition of the building. A gap has been left before the exit to facilitate Haj pilgrims accessing the Saudi Arabia Airlines flight used to ferry them to Mecca.
"The segregation wall is important both for the safety and security of airlines and airport ground staff, as well as aircraft and other equipment deployed in the apron area," an airport official said.
While construction sites are usually cordoned off with corrugated metal sheets, a brick and mortar wall with a concrete plinth and columns is being built to prevent any breach of security during the construction of the new terminal when several hundred workers will be engaged by the contractor.
The old domestic terminal, built in 1995, had a capacity of 50 lakh passengers per annum. Its built-up area is 2.4 lakh sq ft. The current terminal has a capacity of 2.6 crore passengers per annum with a built-up area of 24 lakh sq ft. The capacity is being increased to 2.8 crore through a modular expansion that will lead to the addition of 71,000 sq ft. This project will be completed by the end of this year.

Overwhelmed and understaffed Louvre shuts its doors to tourists
Overwhelmed and understaffed Louvre shuts its doors to tourists (Picture credit: AP) PARIS: The Louvre, the world's most-visited museum and a global symbol of art, beauty and endurance, remained shuttered Monday - not by war, not by terror, but by its own exhausted staff, who say the institution is crumbling from within. It was an almost unthinkable sight: the home to works by Leonardo da Vinci and millennia of civilisation's greatest treasures - paralysed by the very people tasked with welcoming the world to its galleries. And yet, the moment felt bigger than a labour protest. The Louvre has become a bellwether of global overtourism - a gilded palace overwhelmed by its own popularity. As tourism magnets from Venice to the Acropolis scramble to cap crowds, the world's most iconic museum is reaching a reckoning of its own. The strike erupted during a routine meeting, as gallery attendants, ticket agents and security personnel refused to take up their posts in protest over unmanageable crowds, chronic understaffing and what one union called "untenable" working conditions. "It's the Mona Lisa moan out here," said Kevin Ward, 62, from Milwaukee, one of thousands of visitors corralled into unmoving lines beneath IM Pei's glass pyramid. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 오스템 임플란트 받아가세요 임플란터 더 알아보기 Undo The disruption comes just months after President Emmanuel Macron unveiled a decade-long plan to rescue the Louvre from precisely the problems now boiling over - water leaks, dangerous temperature swings, outdated infrastructure, and foot traffic far beyond what the museum can handle. But for workers, that promised future feels distant. "Our teams are under pressure now. It's not just about the art - it's about the people protecting it," Sarah Sefian of CGT-Culture union. At the centre of it all, as always, is the Mona Lisa, a 16th-century portrait that draws crowds more akin to a celebrity meet-and-greet than an art experience. Roughly 20,000 people a day squeeze into the Salle des Etats, the museum's largest room, just to snap a selfie with Leonardo da Vinci's enigmatic woman behind protective glass. Macron's renovation blueprint, dubbed the "Louvre New Renaissance," promises a remedy. The Mona Lisa will get her own dedicated room, accessible through a timed-entry ticket. A new entrance near the Seine River is also planned by 2031 to relieve pressure from the overwhelmed pyramid hub. Until then, France's greatest cultural treasure - and the crowds who flock to it - remain caught between the cracks.

These daily flights will strive to provide affordable travel options to explore the rich cultural, spiritual, and natural wonders these regions have to offer." Jorhat is both a spiritual and economic gem of northeast India. It is close to Majuli, the world's largest river island, which is a centre for Vaishnavite culture and monasteries. Economically, Jorhat thrives on its tea industry, producing some of the finest teas globally, and serves as a hub for agriculture and trade. The city's proximity to Kaziranga National Park also boosts eco-tourism, supporting local livelihoods and conservation efforts. Earlier on March 7, IndiGo announced the operation of a direct flight service between Tiruchirappalli and Jaffna from March 30, 2025. This new route has been introduced to cater to the growing demand and will provide more options for both business and leisure travellers who wish to travel from South India to this historical gem in the northern province of Sri Lanka. The daily direct flights will facilitate travel for our customers and foster economic growth and cultural exchange between the two regions. Speaking about the new route, Vinay Malhotra, Head of Global Sales at IndiGo, said, "We are pleased to expand our presence in Sri Lanka with the launch of our exclusive Tiruchirappalli-Jaffna route." Tiruchirappalli, or Trichy, is a vibrant city in Tamil Nadu, known for its rich heritage, spiritual significance, and industrial growth. Home to iconic landmarks like the Rockfort Temple and Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, it attracts pilgrims and history enthusiasts alike. Trichy is also a key educational hub and industrial centre, housing NIT Trichy and a thriving manufacturing sector. With its strategic location, international airport, and growing economy, the city serves as a major gateway to southern India.
