‘Aye, tera room number kaunsa hai': When Pakistan's Javed Miandad sledged India's Dilip Doshi

Indian Express6 days ago
The late Dilip Doshi and Pakistan's Javed Miandad had a famous on-field confrontation during a India vs Pakistan Test in Bengaluru in 1983. In the match, Miandad was constantly stepping out and only defending the ball when Doshi was bowling. And after each ball, he would poke the Indian bwoler and asked 'Tera room number kya hai? (what is your room number?)'. When Doshi asked why he was asking the question over and over again, the Pakistani great said, 'Tell me your room number. I wanna hit you for a 6 there.'
This tale is as old as time, with a lot of Indian greats narrating the incident, including Doshi back in 2020. 'Basically you got to understand that Javed has this street fighting attitude, a truly great batsman, one of the best I've bowled to, I really respect him as an opponent. He's a good friend as well, I love him off the field but once he got on the field, it was like a change of character,' Doshi had said in a conversation with Murali Karthik in 2020.
'When you restrict him from playing his shots, he would try to get you off your concentration was to create some sense of irritability and he was good at that, he has done with Kiran More, he did it with Dennis Lillee and he has done it many more times with me. So he would tell the close-in fielders something to pass on the message to me or walk across after the ball is bowled and he would say something,' Doshi added.
'That day what he was trying to do in Bangalore on my recall Test was trying to tell me 'What's your room number? I wanna hit the ball there.' It became a legendary thing, many people have repeated that, with some added spices but it's fine, it was all in good banter,' he had said.
'He struggled. He couldn't hit me. He made 98 and got out,' Doshi had added.

India To Hand Debut To 26-Year-Old Star In Oval Test Against England: Report

Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh is set to make his debut in the fifth and final Test against England at The Oval, starting July 31. The 26-year-old bowled at full tilt during India's optional training session on Tuesday, having recovered from an hand injury which had ruled him out of the Manchester Test last week. According to a report in the Times of India (TOI), Arshdeep was in the management's plan for the last two Tests, but his injury, which required stitches, ruled him out of the game. "It is understood that the management had him in the plans for the last two Tests, but his injury made him unavailable in Manchester. With Arshdeep very likely to get into the XI, India's bowling combination is set to be rejigged once again," the report said. The report added that Akash Deep, one of the heroes of India's famous win at Edgbaston, is also likely to return to the playing XI. " Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep are likely to be the other two seamers, and a late call could be taken, if needed, on Jasprit Bumrah." Meanwhile, Arshdeep's childhood coach Jaswant Rai feels the pacer is ready to take on the red ball challenge. "Playing red-ball cricket for the country is the ultimate dream of any cricketer. The same is with Arshdeep. Wo pak chuka hai (He is ripe now). He should get a chance to play with the red ball. He can bring the balance that India has been looking for so long. He has patiently done the hard yards, and I might sound biased, but he deserves the Test cap. If not in England, then where?" Jaswant told TOI. India forced a draw at Old Trafford in Manchester to stay hot on England's heels as the gruelling series heads towards its conclusion. Indian squad: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc, wk), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudarshan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.

Shubman Gill Receives Massive Verdict Amid Handshake Row: 'Not Scared To Poke...'

Former England cricket team skipper Michael Vaughan was quite impressed with Shubman Gill 's leadership in the ongoing Test series. The India-England series was the first one for Gill as a captain but his batting performances as well as courtageous outlook has earned him a lot of praise. While India are trailing 1-2 in the five-match series, the young side has shown a lot of fight and Gill has been leading from the front. Vaughan praised Gill for the aggression that he has shown on the pitch and how he has backed his teammates in multiple situation during the series when tempers flared on the pitch. "I like to see a young captain with a little bit of authority. I've actually loved the way that he has spoken. He's not been scared to kind of poke the bear. You've got to stand up for your teammates, for what you believe as a team. So far, in Shubman Gill, I am seeing a captain that is willing to do that," Vaughan said on Cricbuzz. Gill got into an on-field spat with Zak Crawley during the third match and during the fourth Test at Old Trafford, he once again backed his batters during the entire 'handshake' controversy. Former India wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik was all praise for Gill as well and credited him for how he handled the situation towards the end of the fourth Test. "He came in as a young captain and people were not sure how it is going to pan out, but I can tell you, we have got a bona fide superstar as a Test captain because of the guts that he is showing as a batter, because of how much he stands his ground about what he believes in. The last 10-15 minutes, the way it unfolded, he was just standing there in the balcony, literally poker face saying, 'Get out there, get your hundreds'," Dinesh Karthik said.

'OG Bad Boy': Hardik Pandya's Interaction With Hollywood Superstar Breaks Internet

Indian cricket team all-rounder Hardik Pandya 's interaction on social media with Hollywood superstar Will Smith has gone viral. Hardik posted a selfie on his Instagram account that quickly got popular among his followers. However, among the many comments, one was from Will Smith who decided to post a 'salute' emoji. Hardik responded with a similar emoji and wrote - 'OG Bad Boy'. It was in reference to Will Smith's popular film 'Bad Boys' which released back in 1995 and became a massive hit. Earlier, Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya met Maharashtra Governor C P Radhakrishnan at Raj Bhavan, Mumbai on Sunday. Sharing a post on X, Radhakrishnan expressed his delight after meeting both the players and said, "Delighted to meet our respected Indian Cricket Team Players Shri. @hardikpandya7 Ji and Shri. @krunalpandya24 Ji today at Raj Bhavan, Mumbai on a courtesy meet. My best wishes." Hardik Pandya, after a successful stint as captain of the Gujarat Titans, returned to the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. He took GT to secure their first maiden IPL title in 2022, and finished as runners-up in the following year. He returned to MI in 2024, where he had a tough outing. MI failed to qualify for the IPL playoffs. In 2025, IPL Pandya took MI to the Qualifier 2, where Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer led from the front as PBKS completed a convincing chase to beat MI by five wickets, thus booking their place in the final of IPL 2025 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Krunal Pandya was named Player of the Match in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 18th edition final against Punjab Kings. Krunal, who Bengaluru acquired for Rs 5.75 crore, unleashed every weapon from his fully-loaded arsenal in the high-stakes final and left the spectators spellbound and returning with figures of 2/17 in his four-over spell. He single-handedly broke the backbone of Punjab's attempt to hunt down the 191-run target and steered Bengaluru to a six-run triumph and RCB's first IPL trophy victory. In his memorable outing, Krunal returned with the priceless scalps of Prabhsimran Singh (26) and Josh Inglis (39) to derail Punjab's attempts to chase the target. (WIth ANI inputs)
