During its recent syndicate meeting, the university resolved to allow new institutions, provided they meet the revised minimum standard requirements (MSR) related to infrastructure, faculty, and other key criteria.
Earlier in Jan, the syndicate had proposed a moratorium on new nursing colleges. However, in the April 1 meeting, the current vice-chancellor informed members that updated MSRs for nursing faculty would soon be implemented.
Colleges that comply with these new standards will undergo inspection for potential affiliation. The syndicate deliberated on the proposal and gave its approval.
"We already follow the standards set by
Indian Nursing Council
. In addition, we have framed some guidelines. A committee will prepare a proper minimum standard requirement format to ensure all colleges follow it. Those who qualify can apply," vice-chancellor Dr Bhagavan B C said.
The university currently has around 700 nursing colleges. Major shortcomings in many institutions include lack of affiliated hospitals, an inadequate teacher-student ratio, and failure to obtain pollution control clearance. The vice-chancellor also stated renewal of affiliation will be strictly based on inspections.
"The demand for nursing seats is very high. Many top students secure jobs abroad, resulting in India facing nurse shortage.
According to Indian Nursing Council, there is a shortage of nearly 10 lakh nurses in the country," said S Shivkumar, president, Karnataka state association of managements of nursing and allied health sciences.

What next after medical education?RGUHS plans career guidance cell

Bengaluru: Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) will launch a career guidance cell to facilitate skill training and provide information on job opportunities for its students. A recent syndicate meeting approved the formation of the cell, which is expected to be set up in the next three months. The cell will have different verticals. "There are various objectives that we would like to fulfil," said vice-chancellor Bhagavan BC. "Firstly, we want to provide information about all the courses available nationally and internationally so that students are aware of the possibilities after their graduation. They should be able to choose the right programme after they complete their courses," he said. You Can Also Check: Bengaluru AQI | Weather in Bengaluru | Bank Holidays in Bengaluru | Public Holidays in Bengaluru In the second vertical, the cell intends to connect the students to various industry bodies. As most students of D Pharm D, B Pharma and other allied programmes seek industrial placements and look for jobs all over the world, "we would like to guide them with the right information," he said. "But we will not place them. That is not our domain. We are not a placement agency. Our domain is to help them get the information," the vice-chancellor said. The third vertical is a finishing school. The cell will identify the relevant skills required for each of the courses. Students will be given personalised career advice. There will be workshops on attending interviews, developing resumes, group discussions, and preparing for debates. A proposed language lab is also expected to be part of the cell. The department of medical education had earlier announced plans to teach students various foreign languages, including English, Italian, German, French, and Japanese, to help them get jobs in foreign countries. "There are a lot of external agencies that students approach for learning foreign languages. Why should they waste money on them when we can facilitate it within the university for a nominal cost?" he said. The proposal is for the cell to work in a hybrid model so that students need not visit the campus physically every time. A committee will be formed to work out the nitty-gritty and appoint a university official as in-charge of the cell. RGUHS has around 1,500 colleges under its umbrella across various streams, including medical, dental, nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy, and other allied courses. There are 2.4 lakh students under its ambit. MSID:: 123236769 413 | Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences to make yoga mandatory to counter stress, drug abuse

Bengaluru: Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences will make yoga mandatory for all colleges under its ambit from this academic year, including medical colleges. The move is part of the university's effort to counter drug, alcohol, and tobacco abuse among students and to help them battle stress. "We reviewed the data available nationally and internationally and are aware of the impact of stress on students. The incidences are more in the healthcare sector. There were recent instances of suicides from our medical colleges. We want to help our students. More alarmingly, there has also been an increase in drug abuse cases in the state, which we need to put a stop to on our campuses," said vice-chancellor Bhagavan BC. The university will sign a memorandum with S Vyasa University, which has developed a comprehensive yoga and meditation programme. S Vyasa University will train the faculty in each college. The programme is expected to roll out this academic year. If the counsellors find they are under stress, we will help them through our therapies. If they require medication, we will request all our constituent colleges to pitch in and give them medicines free of cost," he said. Even though the national medical commission once ordered yoga classes for all, it was not implemented in the state. "Yoga will help stimulate the brain, reduce stress and overcome addictions. Yoga is not just part of alternative medicine; it has become part of our lifestyle now, just like morning walks. Its benefits are now scientifically proven," he said. The university will conduct a survey to understand the extent of stress and substance abuse among students and decide the further plans of action. Additionally, the university also aims to make campuses plastic-free. Also on the cards are financial literacy classes for all students.
