Kuwaiti Embassy in Washington participates in Memorial Day commemorations

Arab Times27-05-2025
WASHINGTON D.C., May 27: A delegation from the Kuwaiti Embassy in Washington participated Monday in the annual Memorial Day ceremonies, a federal holiday honoring American service members who died in military service.
The commemorations took place at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington D.C., where thousands of fallen soldiers are buried. US President Donald Trump delivered remarks highlighting the enduring significance of the sacrifices made by American troops.
'The sacrifice that they made was not merely for a single battle, a long-ago victory, or a fleeting triumph decades or centuries past. Their sacrifice was for today, tomorrow, and every morning thereafter,' Trump said. He added, 'In every hour of peril and every moment of crisis, American warriors have left behind the blessings of home and family to answer their nation's call... This morning, we pay tribute to their immortal deeds.'
Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, dates back to May 30, 1868, when it was first observed at Arlington Cemetery. The day commemorates soldiers who sacrificed their lives in various American wars and military interventions and is observed annually on the last Monday of May.
Alongside the Arlington ceremony, military parades were held along Constitution Avenue, which passes by the White House. The parades were attended by senior US military and political figures, including the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the retired Secretary of the Army. The Kuwaiti Embassy delegation was also present, symbolizing the close ties and mutual respect between the United States and Kuwait.
Memorial Day remains a solemn occasion to honor the courage and dedication of the nation's fallen heroes, reflecting the shared values and cooperation between allied countries like Kuwait and the United States.

Columbia University to pay over $200 million to resolve Trump probes

Trump administration had suspended funds in March WASHINGTON: Columbia University said on Wednesday it will pay over $200 million to the US government in a settlement with President Donald Trump's administration to resolve federal probes and have most of its suspended federal funding restored. Trump has targeted several universities since returning to office in January over the pro-Palestinian student protest movement that roiled college campuses last year. He welcomed the agreement between his administration and Columbia in a post on social media late on Wednesday. In March, the Trump administration said it was penalizing Columbia over how it handled last year's protests by canceling $400 million in federal funding. It contended that Columbia's response to alleged antisemitism and harassment of Jewish and Zionist members of the university community was insufficient. 'Under today's agreement, a vast majority of the federal grants which were terminated or paused in March 2025 - will be reinstated and Columbia's access to billions of dollars in current and future grants will be restored,' the university said in a statement. Columbia said it also agreed to settle investigations brought by the USW Equal Employment Opportunity Commission for $21 million and that its deal with the Trump administration preserved its 'autonomy and authority over faculty hiring, admissions, and academic decision-making.' After the government canceled funding, the school acquiesced later in March to a series of demands that included scrutiny of departments offering courses on the Middle East and other concessions that were widely condemned by US academics. Last week, Columbia adopted a controversial definition of antisemitism that equates it with opposition to Zionism. The school said it would no longer engage with pro-Palestinian group Columbia University Apartheid Divest. 'Imagine selling your students out just so you can pay Trump $221 million dollars and keep funding genocide,' the pro-Palestinian group said on Wednesday, calling the settlement a bribe. The Zionist entity denies genocide accusations in Gaza and casts its military action as 'self-defense' after a deadly October 2023 attack by Palestinian Hamas militants. Campus protesters demanded an end to US support for Zionist 's devastating military assault on Gaza and a commitment that the university will cease investing any of its $14.8 billion endowment in weapons makers and companies that support Zionist 's occupation of Palestinian territories. Education Secretary Linda McMahon said Columbia agreed 'to discipline student offenders for severe disruptions of campus operations, make structural changes to their Faculty Senate, bring viewpoint diversity to their Middle Eastern studies programs, eliminate race preferences from their hiring and admissions practices, and end DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) programs.' The government has labeled pro-Palestinian protesters as antisemitic. Protesters, including some Jewish groups, say the government has wrongly conflated their criticism of Zionist 's actions with antisemitism and their advocacy for Palestinian rights with support for extremism. Wednesday's announcement came a day after Columbia disciplined dozens of students over a May pro-Palestinian protest in which demonstrators seized its main library. The agreement asks Columbia to 'undertake a comprehensive review of its international admissions processes and policies,' according to the deal's terms. Columbia is required to designate within 30 days an administrator answerable to the university president and responsible for overseeing the deal's compliance. The deal requires Columbia to appoint an additional administrator to look at alleged antisemitism and suggest recommendations. Rights advocates have also raised concerns about anti-Muslim, anti-Palestinian and anti-Arab bias during the Zionist -Gaza war. The Trump administration has not announced steps to tackle Islamophobia. Trump has also attempted to use federal funding leverage with other institutions, including Harvard University. His administration has tried deporting foreign pro-Palestinian students, including at Columbia, but faced judicial roadblocks. Rights advocates have raised due process, academic freedom and free speech concerns. — Reuters

UK Envoy Belinda Lewis Bids Farewell with Big Wins for Culture, Trade & Peace

KUWAIT CITY, July 24: British Ambassador to the State of Kuwait, Her Excellency Belinda Lewis, welcomed journalists to her Residence as she approaches the end of her posting. Reflecting on the past four years, Lewis lauded Kuwait's 'special and long-standing' partnership with the UK - noting that 2025 marks 250 years of bilateral trading ties. She also thanked the Kuwaiti people for their warm hospitality, recalling Ramadan diwaniyas and the Al-Qaffal ceremony marking the end of the pearl diving season as especially memorable cultural experiences. Lewis highlighted February 2024's rollout of the UK's Electronic Travel Authorisation scheme to Kuwaiti nationals as significant in strengthening people-to-people links between the two countries. Kuwaiti nationals made 162,000 trips to Britain in 2024 - a 6% increase from 2023, with Kuwait Airways now offering 19 direct flights a week to London and Manchester. She also expressed delight that an ever-growing number of Kuwaitis are choosing to study at UK universities, with over 10,000 currently undertaking courses there. Noting the UK and Kuwait's rich shared history, Lewis reflected on the success of joint celebrations to mark 125 years of official UK-Kuwait diplomatic relations - rounded off by His Highness the Amir's trip to Scotland to meet His Majesty King Charles III and discuss Kuwait's partnership with the King's Foundation; and His Highness' August 2023 Guest of Government visit to London marking 70 years since the establishment of the Kuwait's sovereign wealth fund, during which he oversaw the signing of a landmark investment partnership. Lewis noted that His Highness had travelled to the UK five times across her tenure, while Kuwait welcomed four UK Cabinet Ministers, including most recently the UK's Foreign Secretary, the Rt Hon David Lammy MP - plus numerous Ministers of State, senior officials and the Duke of Edinburgh. She said Britain was now 'close' to concluding a landmark Free Trade Agreement with the GCC, while praising the UK and Kuwait's burgeoning international humanitarian partnership that has seen the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development announce lifesaving joint funding for communities in Gaza, Yemen, Sudan and Somalia. Asked about the situation in Gaza, Lewis strongly condemned the killing of civilians attempting to access humanitarian aid and called for an immediate end to the conflict, referring to the UK and 27 other countries' 21 July joint statement. She also detailed the Embassy's initiatives to fund specialist training for Kuwaiti medics deploying to Gaza, and its collaboration with the Palestinian Embassy and the British Consulate in Jerusalem to help small Palestinian businesses export their goods to Kuwait - with Lulu Hypermarket making a large order of foodstuffs earlier this year. Lewis expressed confidence that her successor, Qudsi Rasheed (who will arrive in September), would thoroughly enjoy his time in Kuwait, and that UK-Kuwait collaboration - be it on trade & investment, defence & security, education & culture, or climate & environment - would continue to go from strength to strength under his guidance.
