He also allegedly received expensive gifts from companies and local governments, including a Volkswagen SUV and a robe with gold thread.He was investigated at the time for embezzlement and fathering several children, but was later cleared of the charges.In an interview with BBC Chinese in 2015, Mr Shi was asked about the allegations of corruption and affairs with women. "If there were a problem, it would have surfaced long ago," he said at the time.Shaolin Temple also came under fire in 2015 over a plan to build a nearly $300m temple complex which also included a hotel, a kung fu school and a golf course.The name "Shaolin" has gained prominence in pop culture over the years, including being the title of a 1982 film starring Jet Li. The temple is referenced in songs by American hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan and inspired a spinoff of the video game Mortal Kombat.

Tulip Siddiq has had no ‘official confirmation' of Bangladesh trial, say lawyers
Tulip Siddiq has not 'received any official communication' about a reported trial she is due to face in Bangladesh, her lawyers said. The Labour MP is due to face corruption allegations in the country on August 11, according to media reports. In April, it was reported that Bangladesh's Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) had sought an arrest warrant over allegations that Ms Siddiq illegally received a 7,200 square feet plot of land in the country's capital, Dhaka. Ms Siddiq's aunt, Sheikh Hasina, served as prime minister of Bangladesh until she was ousted in the summer of 2024, since when she has been living in exile in India. A statement released by Ms Siddiq's lawyers attacked the 'longstanding politically motivated smear campaign'. 'For nearly a year now, the Bangladesh authorities have been making false allegations against Tulip Siddiq,' the statement said. 'Ms Siddiq has not been contacted or received any official communication from the court and does not and has never owned any plot of land in Purbachal. 'This longstanding politically motivated smear campaign has included repeated briefings to the media, a refusal to respond to formal legal correspondence, and a failure to seek any meeting with or question Ms Siddiq during the recent visit by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to the United Kingdom. Such conduct is wholly incompatible with the standards of a fair, lawful, and credible investigation. 'In light of these facts, it is now time for the Chief Adviser and the ACC to end this baseless and defamatory effort to damage Ms Siddiq's reputation and obstruct her work in public service.' A source close to Ms Siddiq said that media reports published on Thursday were the first she had heard of the trial. The Hampstead and Highgate MP resigned from her ministerial job in the Treasury earlier this year following an investigation by the Prime Minister's ethics adviser into her links to Ms Hasina's regime, which was overthrown last year. She came under scrutiny over her use of properties in London linked to her aunt's allies. Although Sir Laurie Magnus concluded that she had not breached the Ministerial Code, he advised Sir Keir Starmer to reconsider Ms Siddiq's responsibilities. Ms Siddiq chose to resign, saying she had become 'a distraction' from the Government's agenda.

Documents seen by The Sun show he passed 20 per cent of the estate – £624,000 – to Soka Gakkai International (SGI), a Buddhist charity based in India. Jazz, real name Maxwell Fraser, was a devout follower of Buddhism after his then-girlfriend introduced it to him in the early 1990s. SGI follows the teachings of Nichiren Buddhism, which promotes personal empowerment through chanting. The group has faced criticism from former members, though is one of the largest organised Buddhist groups in the UK. Jazz had no children, meaning other beneficiaries in his will were pals. The remainder of his estate was passed to his niece, Michaela, once she turns 30. The 2019 will was signed off by the High Court last week. Born in Brixton, South London, Jazz was best known for stints on pirate radio stations in the late 1980s and was nearly 40 when Faithless formed in 1995. The band's name is said to have come from its frontman's retelling of his journey to Buddhism and his feeling of faithlessness before he converted. Maxi penned the group's best hit, Insomnia, days after suffering a sleep-depriving tooth abscess, which left him writing music to numb the pain. The group's success saw their music on the DJ decks of every nightclub in the country, and in 2002 they played to 100,000 people in a sunset slot at Glastonbury. He fan spent 21 years in Faithless until he left the group in 2016 to form a blues-reggae band called Maxi Jazz & The E-Type Boys the same year. Faithless led tributes to its former leader after Maxi was found dead at his South London home. In an emotional statement at the time, they wrote: 'He was a man who changed our lives in so many ways. He gave proper meaning and message to our music. "He was also a lovely human being with time for everyone and a wisdom that was both profound and accessible. "It was an honour and, of course, a true pleasure to work with him. "He was a brilliant lyricist, a DJ, a Buddhist , a magnificent stage presence, car lover, endless talker, beautiful person, moral compass and genius.' The star was a huge fan of Crystal Palace and became an associate director in 2012. After his death, the South London side walked out to Faithless at Selhurst Park as a tribute. Club chairman Steve Parish said: "He was such a huge talent, a massive supporter of the club in every way and just a wonderful kind-hearted man. ‘World's biggest' XXL Labubu doll worth £100,000 is found by cops during raid on infamous crime gang
AN XXL Labubu doll worth more than £100,000 was uncovered by Hong Kong police during a major raid on Tuesday morning. The gang, suspected of laundering £4 billion, had been under surveillance for two and a half years - but police never expected to find a giant plush toy among their illicit haul. 4 4 4 According to the South Morning China Post, the seized goods belonged to the Triad syndicate – one of the oldest and most notorious criminal organisations in China. Hong Kong police launched a large-scale raid on Tuesday, writing in a post on X: "When the time was ripe - the HKPF mounted the territory-wide anti-triad 'Operation HIDDENARROW' on July 29, 2025." The force seized €780,000 in cash, 11,000 bottles of wine, luxury watches, gold and a 5ft2 Labubu doll. The figure is said to be rare - one of only fifteen in the world. A similar piece went under the hammer in Beijing in June for around £113,000. Police said they arrested 82 suspects during the operation - 55 men and 27 women, ranging in age from 19 to 78. Among them was the alleged 44-year-old ringleader. He is suspected of running the operation and involving friends and family in the money laundering scheme. Police added on X: "The ringleader manipulated his family & friends as well as the members of his gang into laundering the crime proceeds via calculated means." They listed this means as "continuously laundering the illicit funds via a trust company" and "committing #LoanFraud - using some seemingly lawful import trades as fronts." Pop Mart is a Chinese toy retailer, known for its collectable designer models that are often sold in a blind box format. The company has a stock market value of over £31.6bn. After mammoth success overseas, the Labubu craze has made its way to the UK. The first three months of 2025 were wildly successful for the brand, with Brits searching high and low to nab one of the quirky figurines. In June, Labubu sales in the US went up by 5,000% compared to the year before, according to estimates from equity research firm M Science.
