KUALA LUMPUR: Men doubles shuttlers Mohd Haikal Nazri-Choong Hon Jian pulled off an impressive victory over Thailand's top duo Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Kittinupong Kedren to reach the Malaysian Masters second round.
Spurred on by the passionate home fans, world No. 41 Haikal-Hon Jian turned in a spirited performance to come out on top with a 21-15, 21-18 win over the world No. 14 Thais at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil on Tuesday (May 20).
It was a morale boosting result for the Malaysians, who have been struggling with form and fitness over the past few months which saw their rankings plunge from No. 18 to 41.
Haikal-Hon Jian will next take on either Japan's former world champions Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi or China's Huang Di-Liu Yang for a place in the last eight.

Malaysian athletics on the line tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR: It's the oldest national sports association in Malaysia; it's arguably the most run-down national body in this country. It seeks renewal tomorrow. Malaysia Athletics, the national body for track and field, holds its election, and some of its office bearers seek another mandate. There have been cries of dissatisfaction from fans and a cry for new blood in MA following the anaemic performances of the national athletes. But incumbent Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim seeks another term, and he will be challenged by Datuk Seri Wira Mark William Ling (current deputy president), Perak's Datuk Karim Ibrahim and Terengganu's Datuk Wan Hisham Wan Salleh. By now, after having been through so many disappointments, Malaysians aren't really excited about who wins the presidential race. What we are concerned about is that whoever leads MA must be competent enough to help lift the standards of Malaysian athletics? That means bringing in the golds at Sea Games-level and excelling at the Asian Games. Can Shahidan do that? Or Mark or Karim or Wan Hisham? Historically, the 112-year-old national athletic association has seen much infighting among its officials for the top posts. Many have been accused of putting their own agendas ahead of national interests. In February, MA deputy president Datuk Fadzil A. Bakar made media statements about impropriety in the association, which Shahidan had denied. Fadzil alleged that Shahidan had ignored recommendations to refer a member to the disciplinary board over alleged misappropriation of funds. Shahidan was also accused of trying to amend the MA constitution, extend the office-bearers' terms from three to four years, with a limit of two terms. And certain council members and affiliates were against a move to have the elections only next year. Most of the MA members have been around for far too long without contributing anything to the sport. These insufferable officials are killing Malaysian athletics as they threaten athletes brave enough to speak out. A number of athletes are also unhappy with their progress under certain coaches, and have revealed their problems to the media. It has reached a point that they have lost their respect and faith in MA officials, whom they feel are a stumbling block to their careers more than anything else. What has the current MA leadership achieved for Malayia? Our athletes struggled to win gold, even at Southeast Asia-level, let alone the Asian Games. A total of 48 golds were offered in athletics at the last Sea Games, in Phnom Penh, but Malaysia won only five golds, three silvers and 11 bronzes. Malaysia used to be a powerhouse in athletics at regional-level, especially in the 1980s and 1990s, but today we have become also-rans. Few new talent and little grassroots development as MA officials continue to scratch thier heads. And MA is still banking on ageing athletes like discus thrower Irfan Shamsuddin, who has won six Sea Games gold, to keep Malaysia visible. Can Mark make his mark in Malaysian athletics? He has a vision, but he can only implement his plan if he is elected as MA president. Karim and Wan Hisham also want to lead Malaysian athletics, but do they have what it takes to save the sport here? The destiny of Malaysian athletics is in the hands of those who vote today. Vote for a change for the better, or vote for the same old sad story.

Ahmad Ibrahim: Time for a world-class race track in Sarawak

Ahmad delivering his speech during the event. MIRI (June 14): Senator Dato Ahmad Ibrahim has called for the construction of a proper and permanent race track in Sarawak to cater to the growing number of motorsports enthusiasts within the state and increasing interest from abroad. 'I want to see a permanent Sarawak International Race Circuit built—not only for drift, but also for drag, circuit racing, gymkhana, autocross, karting, and grassroots motorsports,' said Ahmad when officiating the opening of the Borneo Star Drift Series (BSDS) 2025 Round 1 and Round 2 at the Permyjaya Racetrack here last night. He highlighted that such an event has significant potential to generate employment across a wide range of sectors. 'Events like this have great potential in generating numerous jobs involving motorsports engineering, racing crews, event logistics, media production, tyre and lubricant businesses, tuning garages, and even e-motorsport,' said Ahmad, who is also president of the Sarawak Motorsports Association. Commending the young organisers behind the event, he praised the KDC Motorsport Club for their dedication despite limited funding. 'They do not speak much, but walk the talk and work hard. Funds may be limited, but their fighting spirit in making it happen was relentless. Keep going. You have my full backing at the national level. We will continue to push for more support and more funds – not only from the government but also the corporate sector and investors.' Describing the event as extraordinary, Ahmad said it was time to celebrate the rise of Malaysia's and Borneo's drift scene. Ahmad (seated fourth left) with event organisers and participants during a group photo. 'This is not just a race. This is a movement. BSDS2025 is not just a contest of who is the fastest or who produces the most smoke. 'This event is for Malaysians, particularly Sarawakians, to display their talents—in driving, tuning, technical setups, crew work, and most of all, passion. 'Drifting is not just about turning the steering wheel. It's an art, it's adrenaline, it's community.' He noted that the presence of international racers such as Toni Arakaki, Davide Dorigo, and Mervyn Nakamura underscored Sarawak's growing reputation in the global motorsports arena. 'When drifters and racers come to Miri from Japan, Thailand, and the Philippines—that's not just tourism. That is international recognition,' he said. 'That says something about our motorsport potential. And yes, with live streaming and digital coverage, we're not just hosting a local event—we're on the global motorsport map.' He also said that choosing Miri as a host city for the event was both timely and appropriate, given its status as one of Malaysia's top tourist destinations. Earlier in the day, drifters competed in a qualifying session followed by several sub-events including the Top 16 Battle, Top 24 Battle, Top 16 Parade, and Top 16 Tandem. The event continues today with final practice sessions for all drifters, another round of qualifiers, battles, parades, tandems, and the Top 4 Drift Cars Show. Spectators will also have the chance to take photos with the cars. Tomorrow's programme includes final practice, a qualifying session, more battles, the Top 16 Parade, and an autograph session. The event will wrap up with a prize-giving and photography session. Also present at the opening were event organisers Andy Chong and Fish Lee of KDC Motorsport Club, as well as representatives from Sarawak Sports Corporation, Motorsports Association Malaysia, Sarawak Motorsports Association, and Miri City Council. Ee Wei says she's starting to click again with Tang Jie

Toh Ee Wei.–KAMARUL ARIFFIN/THE STAR KUALA LUMPUR: National mixed doubles shuttler Toh Ee Wei says she is finding her rhythm again with partner Chen Tang Jie after they were reunited in April. However, she said there was still a lot of work to be done before she and Tang Jie could restore their performance to its previous peak. "At the Singapore Open, we didn't perform well. But we tried to get our focus back at the Indonesia Open, and we entered the semi-finals," said Ee Wei after a training session at Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) here today (June 13). "I think we are slowly regaining our form. There is more to improve and we need to keep training hard." In March, the Badminton Association of Malaysia announced that the world number four pair would be split to allow the coach to try new combinations following tension in their partnership. However, Tang Jie and Ee Wei were reunited at the recent Sudirman Cup and helped Malaysia reach the quarter-finals. - Bernama
