KUALA LUMPUR: Men doubles shuttlers Mohd Haikal Nazri-Choong Hon Jian pulled off an impressive victory over Thailand's top duo Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Kittinupong Kedren to reach the Malaysian Masters second round.
Spurred on by the passionate home fans, world No. 41 Haikal-Hon Jian turned in a spirited performance to come out on top with a 21-15, 21-18 win over the world No. 14 Thais at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil on Tuesday (May 20).
It was a morale boosting result for the Malaysians, who have been struggling with form and fitness over the past few months which saw their rankings plunge from No. 18 to 41.
Haikal-Hon Jian will next take on either Japan's former world champions Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi or China's Huang Di-Liu Yang for a place in the last eight.

Top pairs could still be included in SEA Games team

Malaysia men's doubles shuttlers Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in action against South Korea's Kim Young-hyuk-Wang Chan during the first round of Malaysian Masters at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil on Wednesday. — IZZRAFIQ ALIAS/The Star PETALING JAYA: National doubles pairs Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah and Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei remain in the Badminton Association of Malaysia's (BAM) plans for the SEA Games in Thailand this December. National doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky said BAM have yet to finalise the 20-player list for the biennial multi-sport event following a selection committee meeting with the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. BAM have requested a one-week extension before submitting the final list to OCM, citing concerns that main rivals Thailand and Indonesia may also field strong pairs in their bid for gold. 'Thailand will be sending their strongest squad, and I understand Kunlavut (Vitidsarn) will also be competing,' said Rexy. 'We still need to discuss further, including with the singles camp led by Kenneth (Jonassen) and other coaches such as Herry (Iman Pierngadi) for the men's doubles. 'We are among the top three contenders. If Thailand and Indonesia send their strongest teams, we will do the same. If not, we will at least send a line-up capable of mounting a strong challenge. He also dismissed concerns of a scheduling clash between the SEA Games and the BWF World Tour Finals in Hangzhou, China. The badminton competition at the SEA Games will take place from Dec 8 to 14, while the World Tour Finals are scheduled for Dec 17 to 21. Earlier, Aaron expressed his intention to make way for other pairs such as world No. 7 Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun or the in-form Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King, who recently won the Macau Open, to compete in Thailand. Aaron and Wooi Yik previously won the men's doubles gold medal at the 2019 SEA Games in Manila, the Philippines. Rexy said while he respected Aaron's view, a thorough discussion must be held before making any decision. 'It doesn't mean I don't support what Aaron said. I respect it, but there are many factors to consider and matters that require detailed discussion. ''We value the players' opinions, and in men's doubles, we have several other strong combinations,' he added.

'Tang Jie–Ee Wei need to have champions mentality'

KUALA LUMPUR: Mixed doubles Chen Tang Jie–Toh Ee Wei must be able to win matches even when they are not playing well. This is the character — the guile and guts of champions — that they need to have at the Paris World Championships from Aug 25-31, said national coach Nova Widianto. Tang Jie–Ee Wei have yet to win a title this season after making three semi-finals on the World Tour, Nova believes that the missing quality is not technical skill, but the ability to overcome adversity in matches. "The top players find a way to win even when they're not in top form. That's the character our players need — to stay steady when things are not going well. "In tournaments, you cannot always play your best from the first point," Nova said. He said world No. 4 Tang Jie–Ee Wei sometimes lose their composure when opponents catch up, or when one of them is struggling. "They can play well when leading, but when the scores get tight, they get a bit chaotic. It's about being tougher mentally. They need to find a way to win even if they aren't playing well." And the coaches have been simulating "pressure situations" for Tang Jie-Ee Wei in training. Nova expects Tang Jie–Ee Wei, who are seeded fourth in Paris, to at least reach the semi-finals and get a medal. "Looking at the draw and their seeding, the chances are there," Nova said. The last Malaysians to win a medal in mixed doubles were Koo Kien Keat-Wong Pei Tty who earned bronze in 2006.

From doubt to determination – Zii Jia back on track for worlds

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's line-up for the World Championships looks set to remain largely unchanged ahead of today's closing entry, with men's singles ace Lee Zii Jia expected to make the trip to Paris from Aug 25-31. It was earlier believed that the former Asian champion Zii Jia might withdraw despite receiving an invitation from the Badminton World Federation (BWF). Zii Jia has been nursing a ligament injury in his right ankle, which forced him out of several tournaments, including the China and Japan Opens. However, as The Star reported earlier, a source close to the player said he has shown encouraging signs of recovery and has been undergoing intensive training with his coach Yeoh Kay Bin. This will be his first outing after a five-month injury layoff, with his last appearance being at the All-England in March. Joining him in the men's singles is Leong Jun Hao, who will be making his debut at the world meet. Zii Jia, however, will not be seeded this time as his ranking has slipped to No. 52. In the women's singles, Goh Jin Wei will be joined by K. Letshanaa. The other representatives are Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah, Teoh Mei Xing-Go Pei Kee (women's doubles); 2022 world champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, world No. 2 Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun and Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King (men's doubles); and mixed doubles pairs Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei (fourth seeds), husband-and-wife duo Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie (sixth seeds) and Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin (13th seeds). The draw will be released tomorrow.
