Why Tiger Woods is building a golf education center at Cobbs Creek Golf Course in Philadelphia

CBS News19-03-2025

After years of neglect,
Cobbs Creek Golf Course in West Philadelphia
is making a major comeback. Opened in 1916, it was one of the only courses in the area to allow all races, ethnicities and genders to play.
"It really has great history," said Enrique Hervada, who is the CEO of the Cobbs Creek Foundation.
In recent years, the Cobbs Creek Foundation took over and raised more than $100 million dollars to rebuild the course. Eventually, there will be a state-of-the-art two-story driving range with a restaurant and an 18-hole course capable of hosting PGA events.
In addition, there's a 9-hole short course that is nearly complete.
But the centerpiece of the project is the
TGR Learning Lab
, which is being built with the help of Tiger Woods — one of the greatest golfers of all time.
"We partnered with Tiger Woods and his foundation," Hervada said. "He has a TGR Learning Lab in Anaheim, California, for about 20 years. This will be the second one."
So how exactly did Cobbs Creek get Woods to expand his TGR Foundation to Philadelphia?
"There was a very special golfer who got his start here and he was the first Black PGA winner named Charlie Sifford," Meredith Foote, the executive director of the TGR Learning Lab, said. "Charlie Sifford was friends with Tiger Woods' father, Earl, and mentored him and became a father to him in his adulthood. And when Tiger had his second child, he named him Charlie after Charlie Sifford."
Once it opens, the TGR Learning Lab will focus on STEAM, educational enrichment, career and college readiness, and health and well-being. But it'll be open, for free, to the community for so much more.
"After school, summer, weekends, at night to explore an array of things ranging from podcasting, how to fly a drone," she said. "You name it, we have it here. And we want kids to feel like this is a home away from home."
And to the people working at TGR and living in the West Philly community it will serve, it means everything.
"I want be a doctor when I grow up," Fatima Choudhry, a TGR Learning Lab intern, said. "It's really, really awesome how there's courses here specifically tailored to science and engineering and math and arts and technology and all that, and it's just really cool to get that hands-on experience."

"It's a matter of setting up programs to introduce kids to the game. And it has to be someone who looks like them. Rory McIlroy's new driver brings about concern as he shoots second-highest PGA Tour score before U.S. Open

Rory McIlroy might have some serious driver troubles heading into next week's U.S. Open. The 2025 Masters winner missed the cut by 12 strokes at the RBC Canadian Open, shooting an 8-over 78 on Friday, which was his second-highest score in any PGA Tour event for his career. The last time McIlroy shot a 78 was in the first round of The Open in 2024. McIlroy said his round "concerns me," and what professional golfer wouldn't be worried after carding a quadruple bogey as well as one double bogey and four bogeys to go with just two birdies. "You don't want to shoot high scores like the one I did today," McIlroy said, per ESPN. "Still, I felt like I came here obviously with a new driver thinking that that sort of was going to be good and solve some of the problems off the tee, but it didn't." McIlroy's driver has been a point of emphasis since the PGA Championship last month, where it was leaked that he had a nonconforming driver that was unusable after pre-tournament testing. Scottie Scheffler, the winner at Quail Hollow Club that week, also had a nonconforming driver, but his name wasn't publicly known. However, McIlroy was ticked off his name got out there, and he skipped media sessions the entire tournament. He went on to finish T-47th. Before teeing off this week in Toronto, McIlroy admitted being upset that his driver conundrum had been made public. "I was a little p----d off because I knew that Scottie's driver had failed on Monday, but my name was the one that was leaked," McIlroy said in a press conference, via The New York Post. "It was supposed to stay confidential. Two members of the media were the ones that leaked it. "I didn't want to get up there and say something that I regretted either, because I'm trying to protect Scottie. I don't want to mention his name. I'm trying to protect TaylorMade, I'm trying to protect the USGA, PGA of America, myself." So, McIlroy's tee shots were going to be under a microscope this week because he would be working with a new driver, and it wasn't as consistent as it usually is. McIlroy is one of the best drivers on tour, currently ranking first in strokes gained off the tee, while being third in driving distance with an average shot of 319.3 yards. But with the rough at Oakmont Country Club having the ability to swallow golf balls and ruin rounds next week at the U.S. Open, McIlroy's accuracy needs to be much better than it has been. He ranks 170th in driving accuracy, hitting the fairway 51.13% of the time. At least being cut from this week's tournament gives McIlroy a couple more days to figure out his driver before teeing it up at the U.S. Open on Thursday. Angel Cabrera, in contention for a 4th PGA Tour Champions win this year, makes albatross

Aces are an anomaly, but most players know there's one result in golf that's even more rare than a hole-in-one: an albatross. It's highly unlikely (the odds are generally accepted as one-in-a-million), but it does happen from time to time when the best players in the world are in action. Advertisement Angel Cabrera was the latest to make a big bird, with a beautiful shot on the par-5 7th hole at TPC Wisconsin on Friday during the opening round American Family Insurance Open on the PGA Tour Champions. Cabrera won back-to-back majors in 2025 Cabrera, 55, is on an absolute tear in 2025, having amassed three PGA Tour Champions wins in the span of just six weeks earlier this year. He won the James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational in April before taking first in back-to-back events in May at the Regions Tradition and the Senior PGA Championship, respectively. Cabrera could be in line for yet another victory as he and his team-event partner, Ricardo Gonzalez, are firmly in contention at the American Family Insurance Open. Advertisement The two-time major champion has had a long climb back to the spotlight in the golf world since being released from prison in Argentina in 2023. He spent two years behind bars after he was convicted in separate cases of domestic violence and threats against former partners.
