Couple accused of murdering man found burnt in Melkbosstrand
A woman appeared in the Atlantis Magistrate's Court on Wednesday alongside her lover, accused of murdering a man whose body was found burnt in Melkbosstrand.
Stacey Lee Hector, 39, and Wade van Reenen, 39, are accused of murdering Malcolm Pather, 41, after his body was found burnt beyond recognition in a vehicle in Old Mamre Darling Road, Melkbosstrand, on July 14.
The court heard that Hector was due to make her first appearance on July 28 following her arrest on July 25, however she attempted to commit suicide and was admitted to hospital.
Hector was joined by Van Reenen in the dock yesterday, as the two were seen chatting away, while Hector placed her head on his shoulder as the two returned to the holding cells.

4 arrested after double murder in KZN
Police acted quickly to arrest four men in connection with a double murder and house robbery that took place in the Maqumbi area of Maphumulo in KZN on Tuesday. North Coast Courier reports that, according to Maphumulo SAPS, the men, aged between 23 and 30, entered a homestead in the Mzulwini area where they allegedly shot and killed a 33-year-old man and his 32-year-old girlfriend. They also made off with cash and a cellphone belonging to one of the victims. Police were able to trace the men to three different locations and arrested them yesterday. The first two, aged 25 and 30, were found at a local tavern. One of them had an unlicensed shotgun with the serial number removed. The next, aged 27, was later discovered with an unlicensed 9mm pistol and the stolen cellphone and cash. The fourth suspect, a 23-year-old man, was arrested at his home. All four men face two counts of murder and one count of house robbery. The 30-year-old and 27-year-old suspects face additional charges for possession of unlicensed firearms. The matter was postponed to August 8 for a bail application. Another co-accused, Zwelithini Buthelezi, his induna, was not in court. A source, who is a court official, told this reporter that Buthelezi's charges were withdrawn on July 29 after he agreed to testify for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) under Section 204. Inkosi Zuma and Buthelezi are also facing another murder charge of killing Zuma's head of izinduna, Qalokunye Zuma, on January 23, 2023. In that charge, Inkosi was granted R25,000 bail on July 3 after his arrest on June 13; however, Buthelezi, who had already been denied bail in Ndlovu's murder case, did not apply for it. He was arrested for Ndlovu's murder almost a month after being freed on bail from holding cells by Impendle Magistrate's Court in connection with Qalokunye Zuma's murder. Man denied bail in five-year-old murder case
The case of three men accused in an incident that left a five-year-old dead in Soshanguve has been postponed to September 10 for a formal charge. This follows the killing of Ditebogo Phalane, who was shot in front of his dad in a hijacking in the driveway of their home on May 10, 2024. National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said, 'The matter was postponed to September 10 for indictment'. This, after one of the accused was denied bail by the Pretoria North Magistrate's Court on July 30. 'The Pretoria North Magistrate's Court denied bail to Elia Moeko (36),' she said. 'Moeko, along with his co-accused Ali Sithole (30) and Nido Gumbe (29), faces charges of murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and possession of ammunition.' She added that Gumbe, a Mozambican, faces an extra charge of being in the country illegally. Mahanjana said, 'The trio allegedly shot and killed Ditebogo during an armed robbery targeting his father, Tebogo Phalane, in the course of a hijacking.' 'The suspects were arrested while in custody at the Pretoria Moot Police Station on unrelated charges,' she said. She added that while Sithole and Gumbe had previously abandoned their bail applications, Moeko submitted a bail affidavit. Moeko claimed he needed to care for his two minor children and his late brother's child. Magistrate Maseena Khan ruled that the accused failed to prove the existence of exceptional circumstances that would justify his release on bail. 'As a result, bail was denied,' she said.
