Glenn Maxwell announces his ODI retirement, prioritizes T20 future
Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has officially called time on his One Day International (ODI) career, choosing to focus on the shorter format ahead of the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, which will be hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Maxwell, 36, cited physical demands and a desire to step aside for emerging talent as reasons behind his decision.
The dynamic right-hander, known for his explosive batting and handy off-spin, played 149 ODIs for Australia. He was instrumental in some of the most iconic moments in Australian cricket, most notably his heroic double century against Afghanistan during the 2023 ODI World Cup. Coming to the crease with his team at 7 for 91, Maxwell defied intense heat and cramps to smash 201 off 128 balls, pulling off one of the greatest comebacks in World Cup history. That performance helped pave the way for Australia's ultimate triumph over India in the final at Ahmedabad.
Speaking on the 'Final Word Podcast', Maxwell opened up about his decision. 'I felt like my body was struggling and I didn't want to keep playing just for personal reasons. I had a discussion with George Bailey (Chair of Selectors) and told him I don't see myself being part of the 2027 World Cup,' Maxwell said. 'It's time to give others a chance to make that role theirs.'
Maxwell's ODI record is as impressive as his impact. He retires with four centuries, 23 fifties, 77 wickets, and a remarkable strike rate of 126—the second-highest in the format's history, only behind Andre Russell. Despite recent injuries, including a broken finger during IPL 2025, Maxwell remains committed to T20 cricket, the Big Bash League, and other global T20 commitments.
Cricket Australia acknowledged Maxwell's contributions in a formal statement, noting that his performances have captivated fans worldwide and played a key role in Australia's two ODI World Cup wins. CEO Todd Greenberg lauded his influence, saying, 'Crowds came to see Glenn bat. His explosive style has inspired the next generation.'
Selector George Bailey echoed the praise, highlighting Maxwell's importance in Australia's cricketing success and affirming his future role in the T20 setup. 'His natural ability is unmatched. We're excited about what he'll bring to the T20 World Cup campaign next year,' Bailey said.
Maxwell's retirement follows that of fellow all-rounder Marcus Stoinis, marking a new era for Australia's ODI side.

Fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya was in a celebratory mood as Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) lifted the IPL trophy after 18 long years. RCB earned a place in the history books after trouncing Punjab Kings in the final of the 18th season of IPL to bring the trophy home for the first time in 18 years. In a post shared on the social media platform X, the former owner of RCB recalled picking Virat Kohli for the team at its inception and said it was his dream to bring the IPL trophy to Bengaluru. 'When I founded RCB it was my dream that the IPL trophy should come to Bengaluru,' wrote Vijay Mallya. 'I had the privilege of picking the legendary King Kohli as a youngster and it is remarkable that he has stayed with RCB for 18 years. 'I also had the honour of picking Chris Gayle the Universe Boss and Mr 360 AB DeVillers who remain an indelible part of RCB history. 'Finally, the IPL trophy arrives in Bengaluru. Congratulations and thanks again to all who made my dream come true. RCB fans are the very best and they deserve the IPL trophy. Ee Sala Cup Bengaluru baruthe!' he wrote. After the establishment of IPL, an auction was held in January 2008 which represented eight different cities in India. The Bangalore franchise was acquired by Vijay Mallya. Mallya paid $111.6 million for the franchise, making it the second most expensive - just behind Reliance-owned Mumbai Indians. RCB acquired several high-profile Indian and international players, including Jacques Kallis, Anil Kumble and Zaheer Khan. In the second round of the auction, they also signed India under-19 World Cup-winning captain Virat Kohli. He was yet to turn 18. In nearly two decades with RCB, Virat Kohli has of course gone from strength to strength. His words after the IPL 2025 win give a glimpse into what the win means for him. "This win is as much for the fans as it is for the team. It's been 18 long years. I've given this team my youth, prime and experience. I've tried to win it every season, gave it everything I have,' said Kohli. 'To finally have it is an unbelievable feeling. Never thought this day would come, I was overcome with emotion after the last ball was bowled.'

Andhra Pradesh to host a cricket World Cup match after 28 years
The 'City of Destiny' has added another feather in its cap. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the window for the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025, scheduled to begin on September 30, and Visakhapatnam's Dr YSR ACA-VDCA International Cricket Stadium has been selected as one of the four Indian venues to host the matches. It marks the return of Andhra Pradesh to host a cricket World Cup game after 28 years. The other Indian cities chosen as match venues are Bengaluru, Indore, and Guwahati, while Colombo in Sri Lanka will be the co-host for the tournament. The tournament is set to begin in Bengaluru on September 30, with the final slated for November 2 either in Bengaluru or Colombo. Apart from host India, defending champions Australia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, England, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and South Africa will take part in the tournament. While Indians are seeking their maiden title, Aussies have been the most successful team with seven wins. This will be the fourth time that India hosts the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup, having previously hosted it in 1978, 1997, and 2013. The upcoming edition marks the return of the tournament to Indian soil after 12 years. During the last edition hosted in 2013, India finished fifth, while Australia clinched the tile. Though Visakhapatnam has never hosted a Women's World Cup match before, it did host a Men's ICC World Cup match between Australia and Kenya in 1996. Australia defeated Kenya by 97 runs. Meanwhile, the last Women's World Cup match hosted in Andhra Pradesh was in 1997 at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in Vijayawada, between England and Pakistan, in which England defeated Pakistan by 230 runs. Though India hosted major ICC events like 2011 Men's ODI World Cup, the 2013 Women's ODI World Cup, the 2016 Men's and Women's T20 World Cups, and the 2023 Men's ODI World Cup, Andhra Pradesh has not had the opportunity to host another World Cup game. Massive renovation The Dr YSR ACA VDCA International Cricket Stadium at PM Palem was renovated with a budget of ₹40 crore by the Andhra Cricket Association (ACA) in February this year. The entrance arch and the entire building were refurbished with a new design. The old halogen lights were replaced with LED lights. Facilities for the players and the spectators were improved. The toilets were upgraded and increased from 54 to 250. The number of lifts and elevators was increased. The interiors of the stadium were also revamped with new sports designs. Illumination, air-conditioning. Firefighting sprinklers were upgraded. The stadium has hosted two Indian Premier League (IPL) matches successfully. ACA Secretary Sana Satish Kumar thanked ICC Chairman Jay Shah and the BCCI for selecting the stadium as a venue for matches. During his recent visit to the Visakhapatnam stadium for an IPL match, Mr. Shah appreciated the renovation efforts and assured that the venue would be given more opportunities to host matches. 'The Vizag stadium offers some of the best facilities for both players and spectators in South India, second only to Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Visakhapatnam is now emerging as a frontrunner for hosting cricket matches in the coming years,' he said.
