Two local students are National Merit Scholars
Two local students were recently named National Merit Scholars.
Gavin M. Greim of Pinecrest High School in Southern Pines won a scholarship to the University of Minnesota to study astrophysics.
Pittsboro-area resident Jack Henry Brannon, who attends Chapel Hill High School, won a scholarship to attend Purdue University to study electrical engineering.
They were part of more than 2,900 winners of National Merit Scholarships financed by U.S. colleges and universities.
These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.
An additional group of scholars will be announced in July, bringing the total number of recipients to more than 3,600.
High school juniors entered the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program when they took the 2023 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants.

Coon Rapids man charged in shooting at UMN after Wayzata graduation
A Coon Rapids man has been charged in a shooting that injured two people Friday on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis after a high school graduation ceremony. Hamza Abdirashid Said, 20, was charged with first-degree assault causing great bodily harm, second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and possession of a machine gun. According to the criminal complaint, at least one of the victims appeared to be an innocent bystander gathered with his family outside Mariucci Arena after the Wayzata High School graduation ceremony. Few details were available about the second victim. Both of the men who were shot, ages 49 and 19, were released from the hospital on Sunday. The criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County gave the following details about the shooting: When officers arrived they found a man who had been shot in the head and had blood spurting from the wound. The man told police he had been standing outside the arena after the graduation ceremony with his family when a group behind him began to argue. After hearing a gunshot, he and his family ran for cover away from the group and toward Oak Street. About 20 yards into his escape he felt a burning sensation on his head. When he reached to touch his head, he realized it was covered in blood. He then collapsed. He remained conscious as people around him performed first aid. He said his right arm was also numb at the time. He was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center and a CT scan showed he had a fractured skull and brain bleed. The area where the bullet struck him controlled the right side of his body and it was why he could not feel his arm. Officers found a second victim, who had been shot in the upper leg and thigh area. A tourniquet was put on the leg and he was taken to the hospital, as well. He did not cooperate with police, the complaint said. Surveillance video captured the shooting from above. It showed several males running out of the southbound doors of the arena. At one point, a man reached into his waistband and drew a gun, firing multiple rounds. Everyone around the group ducked or ran. The shooter jumped over some bushes and fled, ditching the gun and shedding an outer layer of clothing and a mask. Investigators later found the weapon, a Glock 17 that had been converted to fire as an automatic weapon. Shortly after, they arrested Said. Investigators are still determining whether he was inside the arena during the graduation ceremony. He remains in custody. Hamza Said is charged in Hennepin County with one count of first-degree assault, one count of second-degree assault and one count of owning a machine gun. All are felony-level offenses. Surveillance video from the scene on Friday evening shows several people running from the east Mariucci Arena entrance, charging documents say. Said reached towards his waist and extended a handgun towards another man, who quickly started running in the other direction, charges state. Said then fired multiple rounds, according to the criminal complaint. Documents say that when police arrived at the scene around 8 p.m., they found the man who ran away from Said suffering from a gunshot wound to the right leg. Police provided medical care, and he did not cooperate with the investigation, charges say. Officers also found another victim at the scene. The man had been shot in the head, but was able to tell police that he was standing outside with his family after the Wayzata High School graduation ceremony when he heard a group get into an argument behind him. He said he heard a gunshot and starting running away with his family, but felt a burning sensation on his head. He touched his head and saw a "substantial" amount of blood, the charges say, and then he collapsed. A CT scan showed he had a fractured skull and brain bleed. The University of Minnesota says both victims — ages 49 and 19 — have been discharged from the hospital. Hennepin County Surveillance video shows that after Said appeared to fire multiple rounds, he jumped over some bushes and left a black gown and black face mask on the sidewalk south of Williams Arena, according to documents. A witness near the scene told police he saw a man wearing a black hoodie and black face mask run south. Police found Said walking on Pleasant Street Southeast. He was taken into custody. Officers near Williams Arena found Said's gown and a Glock 17 handgun, charges say. The gun had an automatic conversion kit known as a "switch" and an extended magazine. They also found a black face mask. Police are still investigating if Said was inside the graduation ceremony before the shooting.
