Hawks lay down their marker with thrilling first-up win

Perth Nowa day ago
Hawthorn have laid down their marker as the AFLW team to watch after claiming a thrilling four-point away win over perennial contenders Brisbane in their season opener.
The Hawks, who lost to eventual grand finalists Brisbane in their qualifying final last season, headed to Brighton Homes Arena on Sunday with a point to prove.
Daniel Webster's charges defended their hearts out to claim a 4.9 (33) to 3.11 (29) victory in front of 4208 fans, leaving Brisbane to rue their wastefulness.
"Especially after last year's finals, we wanted to make a statement, and I think we came out and did that, which is really good," defender Tilly Lucas-Rodd told the Seven Network.
Midfield tough nut Eliza West (25 disposals, 18 contested possessions), running defender Lucas-Rodd (27 disposals) and skipper Emily Bates (20 touches) led the charge.
Aine McDonagh (two goals) and Ainslie Kemp (nine intercepts) were excellent at each end.
Hawthorn were defensively brilliant, keeping Brisbane goalless in the second and third quarters.
For Brisbane, Jade Ellenger (10 intercepts, 19 disposals) was a fierce competitor down back with support from Jennifer Dunne (six marks), while Ally Anderson (21 disposals) and Belle Dawes (16 disposals) were busy.
The Hawks suffered a massive pre-game blow when Irish gun Aileen Gilroy withdrew through injury, but they still flew out of the blocks, with the first five inside-50s of the game.
But Hawthorn could only claim four points from those entries and Brisbane pounced through Taylor Smith.
Greta Bodey ensured the Hawks finally got some bang for their buck when she kicked a classy goal late in the term, but Dakota Davidson nudged Brisbane out to a four-point lead at quarter-time.
The second term was all Hawthorn, with McDonagh putting Hawthorn back in front, before Casey Sherriff extended the lead to nine points after the half-time siren.
The Hawks had a scare when Jasmine Fleming went down grabbing her right knee, but she had her leg taped and was able to return to play.
Hawthorn led by 13 points at the start of the final term when Fleming burst out of a stoppage and hit McDonagh on the chest for her second goal.
But a wonderful goal from Ellie Hampson gave Brisbane a second wind.
The Lions kept peppering Hawthorn's goal without snatching the lead, and instead opened a third consecutive season with a home loss.
Craig Starcevich's Brisbane next travel to face Fremantle on Saturday, before Hawthorn host Carlton in Frankston that night.

Lions forward out with dodgy calf, Berry still a chance

Brisbane forward Eric Hipwood will miss the start of the club's finals campaign due to a calf injury, but there is much better news for midfielder Jarrod Berry. Hipwood is expected to miss between three to four weeks after injuring his calf in Friday night's 57-point win over Fremantle. The Lions host Hawthorn at the Gabba on Sunday before there is the pre-finals bye. If Hipwood misses the next four weeks it means he won't be available until the preliminary-final weekend. Hipwood went goalless from just three disposals against Fremantle, but has kicked 25 goals for the season to be an important part of Brisbane's attack. The 27-year-old was due to play his 200th AFL game this weekend, but the milestone match will have to wait. Berry dislocated his left shoulder against the Dockers, but scans have cleared him of any major damage and he remains an outside chance to face Hawthorn in the top-four showdown this week. Forward Kai Lohmann (calf) is set to return against the Hawks, but two-time Brownlow medallist Lachie Neale (quad) will miss one more match. Jack Payne (knee), Noah Answerth (Achilles), Lincoln McCarthy (knee) and Keidean Coleman (quad) have already been ruled out for the rest of the season by Brisbane. Meanwhile, Richmond defender Nick Vlastuin will miss the club's final-round clash with Geelong on Saturday with what is believed to be a broken leg. Vlastuin suffered the injury after landing awkwardly during Sunday's 48-point loss to North Melbourne. The 31-year-old is a strong chance to win Richmond's best and fairest award for the first time this year, and his hot form could also land him a maiden All-Australian berth. Brisbane Lions breathe easier following positive news about Jarrod Berry's shoulder injury

Lions coach Chris Fagan is confident Jarrod Berry will be available for next month's finals series despite the star midfielder dislocating his shoulder in Brisbane's win over Fremantle. However, Berry's teammate Eric Hipwood is set to be sidelined for four weeks after injuring his calf in Friday night's 57-point victory. There were fears Berry' season was over when his left shoulder popped out after he was pushed to the ground at Optus Stadium. However, Fagan on Monday was optimistic about Berry's recovery hopes and hadn't completely ruled him out of playing against Hawthorn on Sunday night at the Gabba in the final round of the regular season. 'We need a bit more information on that one,' Fagan told SEN's Fireball. 'There was a level of optimism around that he would be able to keep going, but whether that's whether he needs a week off before finals, we're not sure yet. That will be decided during the week.' A win over the Hawks will guarantee Brisbane a top-four spot, but should Hawthorn win, the Lions could finish as low as eighth on the ladder. However, with Fagan's men guaranteed to be playing finals football, the Lions won't gamble on Berry this weekend if there is 'any doubt' about his fitness. 'If there's any doubt this week, he doesn't play because you've got the bye (before the finals) the week after,' Fagan said. 'That effectively gives him a three-week period to build the strength back up in the shoulder. 'It's probably more likely that he doesn't play this week, and we just get him ready for that first week of finals.' Hipwood had been due to make his 200th AFL appearance this weekend, but he now joins an injury list that also includes Berry, co-captain Lachie Neale (quad), forward Kai Lohmann (calf) and season-ending casualties Jack Payne (knee), Noah Answerth (Achilles), Lincoln McCarthy (knee) and Keidean Coleman (quad). However, Lohmann could be available to return on Sunday night, while Neale remains on track to return for the start of Brisbane's finals campaign. 'If you look at him, he's running really well,' Fagan said of two-time Brownlow medallist Neale. 'It's just the action of kicking that's a threat to this particular type of injury that he's got. 'We'll take the maximum time to get him right, and he'll play in week one of the finals.'
