🦁 Premier League Player of the Week: Why he's a man in demand
But our Premier League Player of the Week comes from the action in between...

After a week of media reports in his native Brazil and in England that Manchester United were very keen on the Wolves striker, who is also reportedly open to that move, he stepped up and showed why such interest exists.
Cunha, who returned fresh earlier this month from serving a two-game suspension and paying a hefty fine for his antics in the FA Cup loss at Bournemouth, was simply unplayable in his side's 3-0 win over Leicester.
Goals wise, he did all of the damage - opening the scoring before going on to set up the two which followed.
The former Atlético de Madrid ace was in sizzling form even prior to breaking the deadlock, bursting clear of three challenges from inside his own half and skewing just wide before a delightful flick give-and-go ended with him firing down the middle for a routine stop.

But there was nothing Leicester's Mads Hermansen could do to deny him when the opener arrived, more brilliant link-up play with Rayan Aït-Nouri ending in a simple finish from close range.
After the break, he first teed up Jørgen Strand Larsen with a delightful through ball to double their side's lead before rounding off the goals by unselfishly laying off for Rodrigo Gomes after leaving Conor Coady exposed with his pace.
Cunha's strike was his 15th Premier League goal of the season - making it the joint-highest scoring campaign for a Brazilian in the competition's history, along with Roberto Firmino and Gabriel Martinelli.

Along with his six assists, it means his 21 goal involvements for the year are second only to Raúl Jiménez (23) in 2019/20 for the Old Gold and you would not bet against him breaking that record.
"He's a special player. When he feels happy, when he is himself, he can create so much," his coach Vitor Pereira said of his latest man of the match performance.
"He had a fantastic game. It shows his commitment to us, to his team-mates, to everyone."
With an apparent £62.5m release clause, is it only a matter of time before that commitment is tested?

Rory McIlroy Discloses Real Reason for Sitting Out Playoff Opener
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. After Justin Rose's dramatic playoff win at the FedEx St. Jude Championship last week, the PGA Tour's postseason now shifts to Caves Valley Golf Club in Maryland for the BMW Championship. During the first playoff, one storyline that dominated headlines was Rory McIlroy's absence at the opener in Memphis. The grand slam winner was the only eligible player who chose not to compete at TPC Southwind and remained silent until Wednesday. PORTRUSH, NORTHERN IRELAND - JULY 20: Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland looks on from the third green during day four of The 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush Golf Club on July 20, 2025 in Portrush, Northern Ireland. (Photo by) More Getty Images One day before teeing off at the BMW Championship, the World No. 2 addressed the controversy head-on. "There's been a lot of discourse about should these playoffs be mandatory," McIlroy told reporters during the pre-tournament press conference. "Obviously I didn't play last week, and is that something they need to look at?" McIlroy went on to suggest a revamped playoff format, one that resets points after each leg to create true elimination rounds. "I've heard this idea kicked around, where everything resets after Wyndham and then the top 70 just play for the top 50 spots to get into the next week, and then everything resets again here, and then the top 30 from this week then make it to the Tour Championship," he explained as quoted. "If you want to try to make it straight playoffs and elimination, I think that would be a good way to go." Still, the Northern Irishman made it clear that even with stricter rules, he would've skipped Memphis. "I'm playing nine more events this year, including trips to the United Kingdom, India, Dubai and Australia," he stated during the same conference. "That extra week off will do me good with the events coming up." At 36, McIlroy emphasized the importance of managing his schedule and body, especially with the Ryder Cup and Race to Dubai title chase looming. "A lot of the guys aren't 18 years into their professional careers, either," he added. "I feel like I'm in a little bit of a different position than some of the guys." Despite the absence during the opening playoff event, McIlroy held firm at No. 2 in the FedExCup standings and remains a favorite to contend at East Lake next week. He'll tee off Thursday at 11:16 a.m. ET alongside world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, marking his first competitive round since finishing T7 at The Open Championship. Meanwhile, defending BMW champion Keegan Bradley returns to Caves Valley hoping to replicate his win last year and secure a Ryder Cup spot. With only 49 players in the field following Sepp Straka's withdrawal, every shot this week carries weight. More Golf: Paige Spiranac Makes Emotions Clear Amid Tommy Fleetwood's All-Class Moment

2025 English Premier League Predictions: Ranking the Top 6 Teams
English Premier League 2025 English Premier League Predictions: Ranking the Top 6 Teams Updated Aug. 13, 2025 2:35 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link With the 2026 FIFA World Cup under a year away, all eyes will be on the upcoming English Premier League campaign. The EPL is home to some of the biggest and brightest stars in world soccer, many of whom will star for their countries in next summer's 48-team tournament in Canada, Mexico and the United States. EUROPE'S BEST TEAMS: WHERE BARCELONA, PSG, LIVERPOOL RANK AMONG TOP 20 Liverpool lifted the Premier League trophy last season after an outstanding 84-point season and added more attacking talent this season with big-money transfers for Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz. But is this the year Arsenal finally lift the trophy? Can Manchester City reclaim their throne? Let's take a look at the top of the Premier League and where each team ranks entering the season: Note: League positions reflect last season's finish. 1 Liverpool 1st, Premier League Last year, the Reds ran away with the Premier League title, besting second-place Arsenal by 10 points. Despite the tragic death of forward Diogo Jota, Liverpool has only gotten better this summer. Arne Slot's side has been the big winner of this transfer window, dropping north of $350 million on backup keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, defenders Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, and forwards Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz. No wonder they're the favorites to retain the English title. 2 Chelsea 4th, Premier League After finishing fourth in the Prem last term, the Blues stunned many by winning the expanded, 32-team Club World Cup in July. Can they harness that momentum and use it to challenge for English and European titles next spring? They've got the firepower. Chelsea already have an emerging superstar in winger Cole Palmer — this season he'll be supported by new recruits like strikers Liam Delap and João Pedro, Pedro's fellow Brazilian attacker Estêvão, and English forward Jamie Gittens. ADVERTISEMENT 3 Arsenal 2nd, Premier League The Premier League runner-up in each of the last three seasons, what Mikel Arteta's team is missing at this point are trophies. Still, Arsenal continues to improve. The Gunners knocked then-Champions League holders Real Madrid out of Europe's top club tournament last April, snaring a convincing 5-1 aggregate win. And they've added real quality this summer in the form of defensive midfielder Martín Zubimendi and forwards Viktor Gyökeres and Noni Madueke. City's unprecedented run of four consecutive Premier League titles came to a halt last season, when Pep Guardiola's side finished third, lost the FA Cup final to Crystal Palace, and were eliminated from European play before the Champions League's round of 16 even began. This team is too good not to bounce back in a big way this year, though — even without club legend Kevin de Bruyne, whose contract wasn't extended. 5 Newcastle 5th, Premier League The Magpies eked into the Champions League places last term only because UEFA granted England's top flight one additional spot. Newcastle fans aren't complaining though, though they will be if and when star forward Alexander Isak leaves for Liverpool on the eve of the new season. 6 Manchester Utd 15th, Premier League It's hard to believe that the 20-time English champions finished 15th last season, when they also lost the Europa League final to Premier League rivals Tottenham. But the Red Devils added forwards Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Šeško this window, and they should fare better in Ruben Amorim's first full season at the Old Trafford helm. Bournemouth signs Diakite to bolster defense after $200M of sales
BOURNEMOUTH, England (AP) — Bournemouth bolstered its creaking defense by signing center back Bafodé Diakité from Lille on Wednesday in a deal worth up to a reported 40 million euros ($47 million). Bournemouth has sold almost its entire first-choice backline over the offseason — center backs Dean Huijsen and Illia Zabarnyi and left back Milos Kerkez, as well as goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga — to generate around $200 million. He could make his debut for Bournemouth at Liverpool on Friday in the opening game of the Premier League season. ___
