Chicago's 4 new speed cameras to start issuing warnings on Tuesday

CBS News15-07-2025
Drivers will start getting warnings on Tuesday after new speed cameras were added throughout the city.
The new speed cameras were just added near parks and schools throughout the city. If you speed past one, you'll just get a warning.
Drivers will get tickets starting September 1.
The new speed cameras will start issuing warnings at the following locations:
Pasteur Park, 4258 W. 59th Street
La Villita Park, 2729 S. Kedzie Avenue
McKinley Park 3624 S. Western Avenue
Marcus Garvey School, 851 W. 103rd Street
Speed cameras posted near schools will only enforce speed limits between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays. From 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. near schools, the speed limit is 20 mph when children are present, and reverts to the posted speed limit when no children are present. From 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., only the posted speed limit applies.
During the initial warning period, drivers caught on camera going at least 6 mph over the limit will receive notices in the mail. Once enforcement begins with ticketing, drivers caught going 6-10 mph over the limit by those speed cameras will get $35 tickets in the mail, and those going 11 mph or more over the limit will get $100 tickets.
Five more speed cameras were activated on June 15. The city installed 11 new speed cameras in May, and another 16 in April.
In total, the city plans to install 50 new speed cameras in Chicago this year, as part of Mayor Brandon Johnson's $17 billion budget plan. Officials expect the cameras to generate $11 million in new revenue for the city.
By law, the city can only install speed cameras near schools or parks, and must post signs informing drivers that they are entering a speed enforcement zone.

Shelter worker is mauled to death by two dogs rescued from abuse and fighting ring

A shelter worker was mauled to death by two rescue animals saved from a dog-fighting ring. Clifford Phillips Jr., 57, died this month at Second Chance Animal Alliance in Yalobusha County, Mississippi, during the attack, according to WREG. 'A dog was already in a pen and he was trying to put another dog in there and the other dog tried to run out, and he tried to hold him off with his foot and that dog grabbed his leg, pulled him down. And then the other dog jumped in with him. One of them was a pit, and the other was a pit mixed breed, and they killed him. They got it all on tape down there,' friend Dudley Woods told the outlet. The two dogs that attacked were at the shelter after being taken in a court-ordered seizure in an investigation into abuse and dog fighting, Yalobusha County Sheriff Jermain Gooch told the North Mississippi Herald. Police who responded to the scene had to shoot one dog dead to reach Phillips. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The other dog was euthanized. Phillips had worked at the shelter for two years, according to WREG. 'His quiet and caring demeanor helped him foster a love for animals and he remarked that he often felt more comfortable around his pets than around people, perhaps recalling the time he spent with Eon, his beloved childhood dog,' his obituary read. He had also worked at a bakery and a Piggy Wiggly in recent years, according to the obituary. Phillips loved watching social media videos - including seeing people's reactions to old TV shows and movies when being shown them for the first time. The 57-year-old was a regular attendee at Sylva Rena Baptist Church, his obituary stated. 'Quiet, caring, and unassuming, Cliff never met a stranger. He loved people. Cliff enjoyed meeting people and swapping stories about their past experiences and sharing details of his own,' the obituary stated. 'He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.' It's unclear what led the dogs to launch into their attack. The shelter released a statement in the wake of Phillips' death. 'It has been one week since the death at the shelter of our friend and employee Cliff Phillips,' it read. 'Alongside his family and many friends, we are devastated by this loss. While we cannot address every question or rumor we have seen over this past week, we have cooperated with local officials. 'Please know that we take the safety and security of our volunteers and employees seriously. We are proud of the work we do in our community and will remain vigilant as we continue to do it.' The victim's older brother, Charles, told WREG that his brother loved animals but he wondered if more could have been done. 'I went out and picked his vehicle up and his last paycheck, but she said, 'I'm sorry I have no words for it,' but she said, 'I'm so sorry for your loss and everything,'' Phillips told the station. 'They've always done good. They've took a lot of strays and puppies and stuff from around here and they've always done good with that.'

Pennsylvania Congressman Mike Kelly's office in Hermitage vandalized

Pennsylvania Congressman Mike Kelly's office in Hermitage, Mercer County was vandalized overnight with red writing displayed on the windows and door to the building. A spokesperson for Rep. Kelly's office (R-PA) says the vandalism took place overnight and the damage was discovered on Saturday morning at the office located along East State Street. Photos provided by Rep. Kelly's office showed several words written onto the windows and doors of the office, including "Mental illness is not a crime," and "GOP = racism, rape, child rape, cover up" listed as bullet points. Rep. Kelly's office says that local law enforcement and the U.S. Capitol Police are investigating the vandalism. Our staff members are safe and were not in the office at the time of the crime. Let's be clear: political violence and vandalism are never acceptable," said Rep. Kelly in a statement. Rep. Kelly's office says the Hermitage office opened last month after moving from Sharon to help better serve people in Pennsylvania's 16th district.

Grenade linked to explosion that killed 3 deputies is missing, officials say

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna announced Friday that one of two grenades found in a Santa Monica townhome complex prior to an explosion that killed three deputies is currently missing. The day before the explosion, members of the sheriff's department's Arson and Explosives Detail assisted Santa Monica police after a resident reported finding "two grenade-like devices" in a storage unit in an underground garage. Luna said the devices were believed to be "inert" after an x-ray but were still transported to the Biscailuz Center Training Academy to be "destroyed and rendered safe." However, according to Kenny Cooper, Special Agent in Charge of the ATF's Los Angeles Field Division, one of the grenades exploded at the training center. He also said that ATF forces and local law enforcement "meticulously examined a radius of over 400 feet" from the blast site. Cooper said the investigation into the second grenade's status is ongoing. Luna denied the possibility that one of the grenades "fell out" between the storage unit in Santa Monica and the training facility, saying that law enforcement is confident that "did not occur." The sheriff did not rule out the possibility of another individual being involved and said his department and partners were investigating anyone potentially linked to the tragedy, though he did not specify how many suspects there might be. "I am not ready to discuss here and now any names of any individuals that may be people of interest or anything of that nature, not yet," Luna told the press. Luna emphasized that the ATF's findings are preliminary but said the agency expects to complete its final analysis within 45 days. The July 18 explosion claimed the lives of Deputies Joshua Kelley-Eklund, Victor Lemus, and William Osborn. The three men were assigned to the Special Enforcement Bureau's Arson Explosives Detail.
