Google announces Tennessee as site for small modular nuclear reactor

A Google sign is pictured on a Google building in the Manhattan borough of New York City, New York, U.S., October 20, 2020. REUTERS/Carlo Allegri NEW YORK (Reuters) -Google, with Kairos Power, has selectedTennessee as the site of an advanced nuclear power plant that is expected to supply electricity to the Big Tech company's data centers in the U.S. southeast starting in 2030, the companies said on Monday. WHY IT MATTERS Big Tech is requiring massive amounts of electricity to scale up technologies like generative artificial intelligence in energy-intensive data centers. Those record energy needs are driving U.S. power consumption to new highs and propelling the development of fresh power sources like next-generation nuclear energy. The Tennessee reactor is the first to be deployed as part of Google's corporate agreement, announced last year, to buy nuclear energy from multiple small modular reactors. The deal would support 500 megawatts of advanced nuclear capacity, which is enough to power about 350,000 homes, to be developed by California-based nuclear company Kairos. The 50-gigawatt small modular nuclear power plant will be built in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, under a long-term power purchase agreement with utility Tennessee Valley Authority, to deliver electricity to Google data centers locally and in the state of Alabama. KEY QUOTE 'This collaboration with TVA, Kairos Power, and the Oak Ridge community will accelerate the deployment of innovative nuclear technologies and help support the needs of our growing digital economy while also bringing firm carbon-free energy to the electricity system," said Google's Amanda Peterson Corio. The project marks the first time a U.S. utility has signed a power purchase agreement for so-called generation IV nuclear power, which is generally seen as the most sustainable and safe form of nuclear power technologies in development, the companies said. ENERGY SECRETARY WEIGHS IN 'The deployment of advanced nuclear reactors is essential to U.S. AI dominance and energy leadership," U.S. Energy Secretary ChrisWright said in a statement announcing the site selection. 'The Department of Energy has assisted Kairos Power with overcoming technical, operational, and regulatory challenges as a participant in the Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program, and DOE will continue to help accelerate the next American nuclear renaissance." Currently, there are no commercially available advanced nuclear power plants in the U.S. (Reporting by Laila KearneyEditing by Marguerita Choy)

Global inflation forecast to reach four per cent in 2025, German think tank says

MUNICH (dpa): Global inflation is expected to remain high in 2025, according to a survey by a leading German think tank, which predicts consumer prices will rise by an average of 4 per cent around the globe. The Munich-based ifo Institute on Monday released the findings of its quarterly Economic Expert Survey, conducted among experts worldwide. "Expectations on both short-run and long-run inflation rates remain relatively unchanged at the global level," ifo noted in a press release. While remaining unchanged compared to the previous quarter, expectations for 2025 inflation vary widely from region to region, the survey shows, with the lowest rate forecast for Western Europe at 1.8 per cent. In North America, Northern Europe, and Oceania, inflation rates are expected to be slightly higher at 2.7 per cent to 3.1 per cent. "Notably, expectations in North America remain elevated compared to the end of the previous year, reflecting still ongoing inflationary pressures," it said. The steepest rise in prices is expected to hit East Africa and North Africa, where inflation is forecast to reach 22.9 per cent and 40.8 per cent, respectively, in 2025. Ifo researcher Philipp Heil pointed to trade disputes and tariffs as the main drivers behind the heightened expectations. In 2026, experts expect global inflation to slow to 3.9 per cent, with prices expected to rise by 3.7 per cent in 2028. The survey was conducted between June 17 and July 1, with 1,340 economic experts from 121 countries questioned. - dpa

Genting Plantation in JV to develop approximately 70 acres of land in Johor

PETALING JAYA: Genting Plantations Bhd has proposed to undertake a joint venture (JV) with Shouguang Vegetable Science and Technology Sdn Bhd (SVST) to develop approximately 70 acres of land in Kulai, Johor as a centre of excellence in tropical vegetable crops. The plan is to have two separate companies: the JV Technology Co and JV Operating Co whereby Genting Plantations will hold the majority 60% while SVST the remainder, it said in a Bursa announcement. The initial share capital of the joint venture companies shall be RM1,000 comprising 1,000 ordinary shares of RM1 each, it said. This will eventually rise to an intended paid up capital of RM210mil for the JV Technology Co and RM315mil for the JV Operating Co, it said. SVST is an indirect unit of China-based Shandong Shouguang Vegetable Industry Group Co Ltd (SSVIG). The China-based SSVIG was established in 1998, and is a national key leading enterprise in agricultural industrialisation in China. Its operations encompass the entire value chain of the vegetable industry, including seed research and development; seedling propagation; standardised cultivation; deep processing; cultivation planning and planting development; wholesale market operation; biological control, as well as import and export trading. According to the circular, SSVIG is seen as one of China's top national leading agricultural enterprises and a leader in vegetable seed research and development with a recorded revenue of approximately 3bil yuan in 2023. SVST will provide contribution in-kind through the provision of technology, know-how and expertise, including identification of planting material which are suitable for growing in the tropical environment while Genting Plantations will provide capital for the JV Technology Co, it said. "For the JV Technology Co, SVST will provide technology, know-how and expertise. The consideration for the above will be satisfied partly by cash and partly by ordinary shares resulting in SVST holding 40% shareholding. Concurrently, Genting Plantations will subscribe for 60% shareholding by cash," it said. Meanwhile, it said Genting Plantations and SVST will subscribe for 60% and 40% respectively of the equity shares in the JV Operating Co by cash.
