IN A bid to represent Dorset in a national competition, a Wimborne woman has organised a charity fundraising fayre at the end of this month
Issy Johnson, 19, from Wimborne, is one of 10 finalists for the Miss Dorset competition and hopes to represent the county on a national level while also raising money for Cancer Research UK.
She said: 'I never thought I'd get to where I am now so to get to the next level would be amazing.
As part of her pageantry and to give back to the community, she has organised a family friendly fayre to raise money for Cancer Research UK, a cause she said is 'close to her heart'.

Issy Johnson (Image: Issy Johnson) The fayre will be held on Sunday May 31 and Monday June 1 in Conels on Haslop Road, a private garden hosting its first ever event.
She said 'Cancer affects everyone. I know people that have died from cancer or are suffering from it and I just want to help as much as I can.'
The fundraiser will have live music, including performance from authentic tribute band 'The Beatles Experience', local artists and activities for children to take part in.
She previously entered the competition in Surrey and is hoping to exceed the £2,000 she raised last year.
Despite being born and raised in Wimborne, Issy said she has not had an 'average' childhood.

After leaving school at the age of nine-years-old, she travelled all over the world with her family, spending time in countries like the United States, Japan and Russia.
She added her experiences living abroad helped her 'become more adaptable and open-minded' and 'pushed' her to 'connect with different types of people', skills she hope will aid her in the competition.
However, she said since she and her family have returned home, she has been 'more invested in the community'.
The winner will of the regional competition will be announced on Sunday, August 3, at the Village Hotel in Bournemouth.
The successful Miss Dorset will then go on to represent the county in Miss Great Britain 2025, with the national Miss Great Britain 2025 final taking place on Friday October 17.
The Miss Great Britain is a national beauty contest held annually in Britain since 1945 and is Britain's longest-running beauty pageant.

The 'haunted' Colchester pub from 1400s that regulars love to visit

TUCKED just off Colchester High Street, The Fox and Fiddler may look unassuming—but step inside and you'll find a pub steeped in centuries of history, ghost stories, and a heart-warming sense of community. Built in 1420, the building has always been a pub. Today, it remains one of Colchester's oldest continuously running watering holes, and a finalist in the Gazette's Pub of the Year competition. The Fox & Fiddler- one of Colchester's oldest pubs (Image: Public) Manager Natalie Beales, 47, has worked at the pub for two decades and now proudly leads its daily operations. 'This place has so many stories within its walls,' said Natalie. 'We have three ghosts actually—Sarah, Jack, and a little boy who runs around. But it's a friendly haunting!' she laughed. With original beams from the 1400s still intact and memories stretching back generations, the pub is a living museum of Colchester's history. Old photos that line the walls (Image: Newsquest Reporter) 'This used to be The Headgate pub and there was a big fire here in the 1980s, but the pub survived,' Natalie added. 'When the old folks come in and share stories about how it used to be, it's just magical.' Natalie started working part-time 20 years ago, becoming manager seven years ago when the owners—former army regulars and pub patrons—bought the place and entrusted her with its care. 'It's very fulfilling,' she said. 'Every day is different. You've got your regulars—some, I know exactly what time they'll arrive—but every day brings something new that makes you chuckle.' The pub serves a wide range of drinks including locally sourced ales, premium beers, and even non-alcoholic options for younger drinkers. 'We've had to cut down a bit due to costs,' Natalie noted, 'but we try to have something for everyone.' And yes, there's a quirky touch too. The feature tree in the corner (Image: Newsquest Reporter) 'We've got a little 'feature tree' in a dead corner. I change themes every month and is always a conversation starter!' With live music, sports, events, and now the beer garden open for summer, The Fox and Fiddler Inn is sure to remain a spirited cornerstone of Colchester life—hauntings and all. Indeed, the sense of community is what keeps people coming back. Jason Ventress, a regular (Image: Newsquest Reporter) Jason Ventress, 29, a regular at the pub said: 'It's like the TV show Cheers. Everyone knows everyone. It's got that family feel.' Ian Smith, 44, another loyal customer, said: 'It doesn't feel like you're in the town centre. It's like a village pub—warm, not super commercial. It's a little community.'

'Exciting' London pub reopens after refurb with 8,000 sq ft garden

A newly reopened pub has unveiled an 8,000 sq ft garden as part of a £1 million investment. The Hammersmith Belle, leased by Belle Pubs & Hotels, has completed the latest stage of its major refurbishment, creating a garden area for 300 people. This includes beach huts, a children's play area with a castle, and an all-weather outdoor sports pergola featuring TVs for live sports viewings. Councillor Zarar Qayyum, cabinet member for enterprise and skills, and Saracens and England rugby player Rosie Galligan officially opened the garden on May 24. The grand opening was marked by a weekend-long garden party with food and drink tastings, children's face painting, and a jazz band performance. The pub is a short walk from Hammersmith and Ravenscourt Park stations, as well as the soon-to-be-opened Civic Centre. Jane White, managing director of Belle Pubs & Hotels, said: "We're excited to be unveiling our wonderful pub garden which we hope will become a popular destination for families, groups of friends and sports fans throughout the summer. "My grandmother lived in Hammersmith, just around the corner from the pub, and I have fond memories of visiting the local area during the summer holidays. "We pride ourselves on creating a welcoming, fun community pub the whole family can enjoy. "And with our new garden, we look forward to welcoming even more customers to the Hammersmith Belle. "All we need now is for the British weather to stay kind to us." Inside, the pub has been transformed into a charming space, featuring an interior adorned with red and pink silk roses on the walls and artificial ivy and flowers on the ceiling. For sports fans, the pub boasts multiple TV screens and two super screens showing a variety of live national and international sporting events, from football and rugby to Formula One and cricket. Additionally, there's a Bull Hitters Winmau-branded darts lounge with five oches, making it a destination venue for darts enthusiasts. The pub was originally licensed in the 17th century as the Hog. It was renamed the Hampshire Hog before becoming an Indian restaurant. It reopened in January 2025 after being taken over by Belle Pubs & Hotels. The Hammersmith Belle is part of an area in Hammersmith benefiting from a revival, supported by local efforts to enhance the late-night economy and improve the streetscape. The pub is next to the new Civic Campus and the new Hammersmith Highline. Phase three of the £1 million refurbishment plan is expected to include the addition of 14 bed-and-breakfast accommodation rooms, planned for later this year. Mr Qayyum, said: "The Hammersmith Belle is a great pub and a much-loved part of Hammersmith's late-night economy. "We're committed to growing our late-night economy in Hammersmith & Fulham as it plays a vital role in providing jobs, attracting visitors, and offering social connection. "Not only will it support our thriving hospitality industry but it will also benefit the wider borough economy too."
