Burton Joyce teen with hearing loss, aged 15, to record abroad

BBC News14-05-2025
A 15-year-old boy with special educational needs - including hearing loss - will fly to the United States after winning an international music competition.Freddie, from Burton Joyce, Nottinghamshire, will see a concert in New Jersey by reggae vocalist Maxi Priest, then record music with the artist at a studio in Maryland.Despite his hearing loss, ADHD, and autism, the teenager said he has "been around music [his] whole life"."I think I've been able to power through it, without it affecting me too much, because I've been in that positive mindset of 'you know what, I can do anything if I put my mind to it'," he said.
The contest involved submitting a short "jingle" script which promoted healthy living.
His mum, Sarah, said she knew Freddie would require "special needs" because of complications during and after birth, including single umbilical artery syndrome. However, she said that it did not worry her."The irony is that I'm actually an audiologist, so I'm working with people with hearing loss all the time. So for me, it didn't really faze me," Sarah said."He's always been more determined than ever to prove that just because he has these special needs and has to wear hearing aids, it won't stand in the way of him achieving."Sarah added that the opportunity to fly to the United States was "exceptionally exciting".
'He's come far'
Beyond the international competition win, Freddie has also started his own music and drama school to support other people with special educational needs. He said there are two students so far, who are being taught through Zoom, but he has aspirations to hire spaces to hold physical sessions."It doesn't cost anything to believe in someone, but it makes the biggest difference," he said.Sarah added: "When you're given the news at your 20-week scan, you know, of what [complications] could be ahead, and I look now at my 15-year-old and see what he's achieved."I can't honestly believe how far he's come, and how much he supports others. I'm incredible proud."The family will fly out to America on 29 May, ahead of the concert.

Style experts slam ICE Barbie Kristi Noem for dressing more like a 'media personality' than 'cabinet official'

Style experts aren't exactly sure what to make of United States Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem's evolving style. Noem, 53, began her political career as a member of the South Dakota state house of representatives in 2007, later sitting as the Governor of South Dakota before she was appointed to President Trump's cabinet. Since she's moved up in political ranks, it appears that her style has as well, as she's been seen sporting a myriad of designer labels in recent months, even wearing a $50,000 Rolex watch during a March visit to a prison in El Salvador. And her dramatic ensembles have even earned her the nickname 'ICE Barbie' in recent months. Her signature look now includes long, waved locks and a face of full glam and she often sports bold and dramatic ensembles. It's a far cry from her previous outfits as a member of The House of Reps, and even Governor, when she would wear flannel shirts and rocked a short, feathered hairdo. And according to style experts, her change in appearance could represent something deeper. Elena Mensch, founder of Velvet Image Lab, told the Daily Mail that as Governor, Noem's outfits gave the message that said 'I'm one of you' - wearing things like cowboy boots and rancher hats. 'It worked because cowboy culture runs deep there. Now as Secretary? Everything's shifted toward high-glam production: the enhanced makeup, completely new hairstyle, body-conscious cuts that emphasize femininity over authority,' Mensch shared. The professional stylist explained that Noem has now traded her 'authentic western vibe' for something that's more fitting for a 'media personality' than a 'cabinet official.' 'Some experts think she's simply trying to fit Trump's type, trading authority for femininity,' Mensch said. 'But here's what I see: a recently promoted woman who hasn't figured out her new visual language yet.' 'She's throwing everything at the wall – glamorous party girl one day, tactical tough guy the next, prairie rancher on weekends,' she continued. At the end of the day, Mensch said that the 'real problem' is the fact that the Secretary hasn't picked a lane. 'Instead, we get this bizarre mashup – full glam makeup and perfect blowout... while wearing a bulletproof vest on ICE raids,' the expert shared. 'No actual service member operates with loose hair flying – it's dangerous and impractical. 'As well as no one goes to visit deportees in detention wearing $50K gold Rolex – it's just not a good idea. 'Actually, it's the perfect metaphor for her whole approach – luxury aesthetics meets law enforcement cosplay,' she added. 'But when you're trying to be everything at once, it's just not working – you just send mixed signals and confuse everyone.' Cynthia Kennedy, CEO of Cynthia Kennedy Stylist & Your Style Transformation Academy, seemed to have a similar take on Noem's evolved style. 'When she was Governor, Kristi's style had that polished, conservative politician look - structured dresses, blazers, and neutral color palettes,' Kennedy told the Daily Mail. 'Since she's received her new role and has stepped onto a bigger national stage, she's moved toward a sleeker, more tailored aesthetic that feels more high-fashion and image-conscious,' she noted. And there's one style that Kennedy believes Noem might want to stay away from: clothes that have an 'ultra bodycon fit' to them. 'While they can look striking, they sometimes toe the line between polished and overdone for a political setting,' the styling expert explained. 'Slightly softer tailoring - think a little more drape in the skirt or a wider-leg trouser - could still look powerful but would bring a modern ease to her style,' Kennedy said. 'It would keep the sophistication she's aiming for but feel less "on the nose" in terms of formality and fit.' Last week, Noem lashed out at South Park for mocking her looks. Speaking with conservative political commentator Glenn Beck on his podcast, Noem described the content as 'lazy.' 'I didn't get to see it, I was going over budget numbers. I just think it never ends, it's lazy to constantly make fun of women for how they look,' she said. 'Always the liberals and extremists do that, if they wanted to criticize my job go ahead and do that but clearly they can't. They just pick something petty like that.'

Fans react to photos of Kimberly Guilfoyle when she was young

Political fans have been left totally shocked after astonishing pictures of Kimberly Guilfoyle when she was younger have resurfaced on Reddit . Guilfoyle, 56, is the ex of President Donald Trump 's son, Donald Trump Jr . She was also married to California Governor Gavin Newsom from 2001 to 2006. Since she's been in the political spotlight, she's made a splash thanks to her glamorous looks . In fact, it was even rumored that Don Jr. complained about his former fiancée's style before he was spotted with his new love interest, Bettina Anderson, 38. 'Don Jr. has been telling people for months that Kim is so uptight and always dresses so professionally in these kinds of dresses and high heels, and never looks relaxed or casual,' an insider told People last December. 'The tight dresses need to go and she has been told that.' But now, it isn't her fashion choices that are making waves - it's how much her looks have changed over the years. Someone posted a slew of old photos of her to Reddit this week, and they quickly went viral, leaving many stunned over how different she used to look. The other two photos posted from her past showed the Former First Lady of San Francisco out on the town. In one picture, she wore an all-pink look with shimmering pink makeup, and in the other, she sported a spaghetti-strapped black dress and short haircut. The post also included current photos of Kimberly, in which she was seen wearing her signature smokey eye makeup, dark eyebrows, and plumped lips. 'Oh wow, if you hadn't said they're the same person I would never have believed it,' one Reddit user wrote in the comment section. Another agreed, 'She gave herself Republican face. What a tragedy.' 'She was stunning when she was younger. Unfortunately she lost her marbles and destroyed herself to fit that orange freak's preference,' someone else typed. A different Redditor shared, 'She was definitely a looker when she was younger.' 'Pic two is so pretty,' another wrote. These resurfaced photos come just a few months after she stunned fans after posing for the cover of Metropolitan Palm Beach magazine. Kimberly looked super glam as as she posed in a bright red blazer and white blouse with a pussy bow. The glamorous shoot divided the 56-year-old's followers, with many praising her, while others accused her of using filters to transform her appearance.

Maxim slammed as 'sexist' article teaching men how to 'cure' feminists resurfaces

Weeks after Maxim was slammed for its list of 'unsexiest' women, the men's magazine has come under fire again. Another article from the early aughts has now resurfaced, this time, taking aim at 'unshaven, militant, and protesting vegan ' women. Titled 'How to cure a feminist,' the controversial article listed four ways for men to tame feminist females - along with a photo series showing the woman gradually undressing down to a bikini. The piece, written in November 2003, was recently shared to Reddit where offended users immediately rushed to the comment section to share their thoughts. 'How to cure a feminist,' read the title, with the words, 'Turn an unshaven, militant, protesting vegan into an actual girl!' written underneath. The article was then split into four different steps which included: 'Win her over,' 'Open her eyes,' 'Treat her right,' and 'Shift her focus.' Over the first step there was a photo of a woman wearing low-rise baggy jeans and a tank top with messy hair, a cigarette in her mouth, and no shoes; she held up her arms and showed off her hairy underarms. 'A feminist is just like any other woman: she won't give you the time of day if you don't know how to approach her,' the advice began. The article then went on to encourage men to 'pretend to share her beliefs.' 'Hide your lack of feminist knowledge and show her how much you value her opinion by asking intelligent questions,' the magazine joked, giving examples like, 'What must women do to earn equal pay for this equal work?' and, 'Has Gloria Steinem's marriage hurt the feminist agenda?' The second step, as per the magazine, was to 'open her eyes.' The accompanying picture showed a woman in bootleg jeans, sneakers, and a slightly cropped pink fitted hoodie and her hair looking sleek and straightened. 'Don't wait for her to think differently - give her some options,' the publication wrote. 'Begin by discussing "lipstick" feminism, which is far more moderate than the combat-boot variety.' Jennifer Baumgardner, who co-authored Manifesta: Young Women, Feminism, and The Future, was quoted encouraging men to not avoid talking about things like 'shopping, makeup, or boyfriends.' The article then advised men to 'sign her up for Bust, a feminine-light mag that says women can be independent, strong, and relatively hairless.' Third step, was to 'treat her right,' and it assured men you can 'treat a feminist just like you'd treat any other girl.' 'As long as you're not overbearing she won't object to your opening the occasional door or picking up a check,' the article read. Along with this piece of advice was a snap of a naval-bearing woman in a short shirred white skirt and a tiny matching top. She also had white high heels and her hair was in pigtails. The fourth step encouraged men to 'shift her focus,' with a large 'cured' stamp over the picture of a scantily-clad woman. 'To preserve any chance of getting your chin buttered, you'll have to re-shizzle her feminist-tinged interests so you can actually spend time with her,' Maxim wrote. They then quoted Michelle Weiner-Davis, the author of The Sex Starved Marriage, who said to 'focus on the things you have in common.' To paint the picture of a cured feminist, the women in the picture was posing in only a red and black lingerie with black heels on and heavy eye makeup. While it's not entirely certain if the piece was sartorial or not, fuming users took to Reddit to slam Maxim over it, branding it as 'ridiculously sexist.' 'Awfully bold of them to disguise their bimbofication porn as relationship advice,' one user snarked. 'This just sums up the nonsense that was the early 2000s. The media was always taking hot wrong takes when it came to women, like all the time,' chimed in another. 'We were living in the wild wild west, I can't believe some of the stuff that was allowed to air or printed. 'There needs to be some sort of gender course that's specific to the early 2000s.' 'Gay "jokes," feminism "jokes" [were] aplenty in the early '00's. Movies like American Pie that released around the period exemplify this and man does it not hold up at all today,' agreed another. 'Strange how some still argue that these things are fixed and that we shouldn't speak up against them.' The men's magazine, which is known for featuring scantily clad celebrities, also came under fire last week after a list that it published of the 'unsexiest' female celebrities resurfaced. The list contained five female stars and a brief description for each one explaining the reasoning behind their placement on the list. Sarah Jessica Parker, Amy Winehouse, Sandra Oh, Madonna, and Britney Spears were amongst those who made the cut.
