Malaysia expresses deep concern over detention of Madleen flotilla crew

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia is deeply concerned over the detention of individuals aboard the Madleen flotilla bound for Gaza.
In a statement on Monday, the Foreign Ministry, Wisma Putra, stated that the very purpose of this peaceful humanitarian mission was to pave the way for the delivery of critically-needed humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, who continue to be subjected to mass starvation because of the inhumane blockade imposed by the Zionist Israeli regime.
"The interception and harassment of the flotilla's crew exposed a deliberate and ruthless obstruction of humanitarian aid that could potentially bring some relief to the most vulnerable, including children, women, and the elderly.
"The blockade of Gaza is a brutal and barbaric act, and the international community should detest it for the sake of compassion and human dignity," the statement stated.
Malaysia once again calls on the international community to demand the Zionist Israeli regime to cease the blockade and to allow an unimpeded delivery and access of humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, the statement added.
Anadolu Ajansi reported that the 18-metre sailing boat Madleen set sail for Gaza on June 1 from the Port of San Giovanni Li Cuti in Catania, Sicily, Italy, as part of the latest mission organised by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition to break the blockade on Gaza and deliver aid to the region.
A total of 12 people are on board the Madleen, including 11 activists and one journalist.
The ship is carrying urgently-needed supplies for the people of Gaza, including baby formula, flour, rice, diapers, women's sanitary products, water desalination kits, medical supplies, crutches and children's prosthetics, according to its organisers.

Turkey slams Israel for intercepting Gaza-bound aid boat

ISTANBUL: Turkey slammed Israel for intercepting a Gaza-bound boat carrying activists including Swedish campaigner Greta Thunberg early on Monday, describing it as a 'heinous attack'. 'The intervention by Israeli forces on the 'Madleen' ship.. while sailing in international waters is a clear violation of international law,' it said, describing it as a 'heinous attack' by the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Madleen left Italy on June 1 to raise awareness over food shortages in Gaza, which the United Nations has described as the 'hungriest place on Earth', with the entire population at risk of famine. In a statement, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition said Israeli troops 'forcibly intercepted' the vessel in international waters at 0102 GMT as it was approaching the Gaza Strip. Gaza's Hamas rulers condemned the move, saying in a statement the boat was being taken to the Israeli port of Ashdod. Turkey's foreign ministry said there were Turkish nationals among those on board, without identifying them. The Freedom Flotilla's website said the boat was carrying 12 people from seven countries, including Turkey. 'The international community's justified reaction to Israel's genocidal policies, which use hunger as a weapon in Gaza and prevent the delivery of humanitarian aid, will continue,' the ministry added, saying Israel would manage to 'silence the voices defending human values'. The boat's interception came just over 15 years after Israeli commandos staged a botched raid on the Mavi Marmara, a Turkish ship carrying activists to reach Gaza, killing 10 people -- all of them Turkish nationals. The assault sparked a years-long diplomatic crisis between Turkey and Israel, which only restored full diplomatic ties in 2022 -- in a reconciliation which has since been shattered by Israel's war on Gaza's Hamas rulers. The war was triggered by Hamas' October 2023 attack on Israel that resulted in the deaths of 1,218 people on the Israeli side, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of official figures. Israel has hit back with force in an ongoing military assault that Gaza's health ministry says has killed at least 54,880 people, mostly civilians.
