John Swinney urged to join Independence Summit by Alba
Earlier in April, Alba MSP Ash Regan called for a convention to be held a year out from the Holyrood elections, insisting that 'energy' needs to be rebuilt if independence is to be a 'realistic proposition' to voters.
However, the SNP sidestepped Alba's call, and the Greens poured cold water on the proposal, saying the party has 'significantly different visions about what an independent Scotland would look like'.

MacAskill has now written to the leaders of each of Scotland's pro-independence parties urging them to reconsider their decision following Reform UK's surge in the English local elections on Friday.
He added that by attending the summit, all parties involved can help create a clear way forward for demanding and achieving independence.
MacAskill (below) wrote: 'Scotland is crying out for Independence as sky high energy costs and the threat posed to the poorest and weakest in our society from Westminster's benefit cuts clearly demonstrates.

'In the week when oil refining finally ended at Grangemouth with the loss of 400 jobs and it was revealed that 80,000 children in Scotland are living in severe poverty. And just yesterday, we witnessed the beginning of Farage's march to Downing Street. It is beyond doubt that Westminster rule is failing the people of Scotland.
'An urgent push for Independence is essential. The coming Holyrood election can be Scotland's Independence Election but it requires all pro-Independence parties to come together in a show of unity.
'We can disagree about the why of Independence but we can all agree on the urgent necessity of achieving Independence and begin to discuss and agree how we get there.'
AUOB organisers said they expect around 5000 people to join the demonstration this Saturday, which will begin in the city's West End.
The march will set off from Kelvin Way at 11.30am, moving through the city centre before ending at Glasgow Green.
Organisers have encouraged demonstrators to bring banners, placards, megaphones, flags, pipes, and drums to create a lively and visible display of support for Scottish independence.
At the rally, Alba's MacAskill is expected to call on other party leaders to agree to join the independence summit, as he said unity amongst the parties would be the bedrock towards the cause.
MacAskill added: 'That is why I am writing to John and the other pro-Independence party leaders asking them to commit to taking part in an Independence Summit.
'Independence offers a better way for Scotland but we need to work together to achieve it. An Independence Summit can be the first step in charting a clear and positive way forward.
'Unity is strength, and must be the bedrock of the Independence cause. Let us unite the movement and come together in a show of unity. If we unite we will win!'

Swinney calls on UK Government to enable Gaza students to travel to Scotland
Scotland's First Minister has called for 'urgent action' from the UK Government to ensure students from Gaza can take up their places at Scottish universities. John Swinney said that other countries have successfully evacuated Gazan students to enable them to continue their studies. And he called on the UK Government to do 'everything in its power' to enable students to travel from Gaza to Scotland. The UK Government has said it is doing everything it can to find a solution. Mr Swinney spoke out after the Sunday Mail reported on a Palestinian student who has a place at Edinburgh University, but has not been able to leave Gaza to start her course next month due to visa processing issues. Mr Swinney said: 'I am appalled at the situation the students from Gaza are facing. We must see urgent action from the UK Government to support them in taking up their university places in Scotland. 'The people of Gaza are already suffering unimaginably at the hands of the Israeli government – the idea that these students could also be denied the chance to take up the university places in Scotland they have worked so hard to attain is not acceptable to me. 'I am aware that other countries including France, Ireland and Italy have managed to successfully evacuate students, so the UK Government cannot simply duck its responsibilities here. 'Where there is a political will, a resolution can be found – and failure to act is quite literally putting these people's lives at risk.' Scotland's Education Secretary Jenny Gilruth has written to the UK Home Secretary and UK Secretary of State for Education calling for action to support the students impacted and for urgent discussions. Mr Swinney said: 'I am clear that the international community must put a stop to Israel's killing in Gaza and that we must see the immediate recognition of a sovereign, independent Palestine. 'But until that point, the UK Government must do everything it can to ensure ordinary Gazans are not punished further. 'Scotland looks forward to welcoming students from Gaza seeking to take their places at our universities – the UK Government must do the right thing and do everything in its power to allow them to get here.' A UK Government spokesperson said: 'We are aware of these students and are actively considering how we can best support. 'Of course, the situation on the ground in Gaza makes this extremely challenging but we are doing everything we can to find a solution.' The normal arrangements for non-British nationals requiring a visa are to make an online visa application and submit their biometrics at a Visa Application Centre, prior to travel to the UK. The UK Government said biometrics are an essential part of the immigration process as they enable it to confirm the identity of the person and assess whether they pose a risk to public safety. Where an applicant cannot travel to a Visa Application Centre (VAC) to enrol their biometrics, they can contact the UK Government to explain their circumstances, so it can consider all the options. SNP councillor hits back at 'lie' he defected to Reform UK
Alexander McLellan was listed as a member of Nigel Farage's party on the local authority's website. It has now been changed back to list the Tillydrone, Seaton and Old Aberdeen representative as a member of the SNP. The glitch emerged after Luis Cook, a right-wing influencer, posted on Twitter/X that McLellan was the 'first (direct) defection from the SNP to Reform'. Cook's post has since been deleted. READ MORE: Police Scotland 'breaching human rights to subdue Palestine protests' McLellan was quick to hit back at the claims as a 'lie' and told the Herald the issue had been 'reported to senior officials and is being investigated'. On Twitter/X, McLellan wrote: 'These people are so desperate for attention that they will fabricate nonsense about whatever, and whomever, they can. 'The problem they have is that defamation laws exist in the UK for a reason, and if this post isn't taken down then they will likely find that out.' Reform UK Scotland also responded to the post, writing: 'Absolute nonsense. We have never spoken with this councillor and have zero knowledge of his wish to defect.' So far, 13 councillors in Scotland have defected to Reform – the overwhelming majority from the Scottish Conservatives. Jamie McGuire became the first councillor to defect from Scottish Labour to Farage's party in June. He serves the Renfrew North and Braehead ward on Renfrewshire council. McGuire announced the move during Farage's visit to Scotland ahead of the Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse by-election, where the Reform UK leader hid from the Scottish press and faced protests outside of the party's local campaign offices. In April, Reform claimed that their membership numbers in Scotland had passed 10,000 people, making them the country's third largest party. Polling published in May suggested Farage's party could overtake Scottish Labour at the Holyrood 2026 election, suggesting they could return 19% of the vote on the constituency ballot and 20% on the regional list.
