HAWANA: Sarawak Govt Prepared To Send Journalists For Executive Course At Cambridge

KUCHING, May 29 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak government has expressed its willingness to send media practitioners who are also natives of the state to participate in an executive course related to journalism in Cambridge, United Kingdom.
Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg stated that the approach was taken to enhance the quality of news reporting, thereby elevating the prestige of the country's journalism industry.
'If we can provide free tertiary education, of course, I have an allocation to send journalists for this executive programme.
'The selection of journalists to attend this executive course involves the collaboration of journalist associations in Sarawak to see the qualifications of candidates… I hope this effort will improve the quality of reporting, and specifically for media practitioners from Sarawak who have new ideas for the future of journalism,' he said.
He told reporters after the Carbon Asia 2025 Conference, here, today.
Earlier, Abang Johari was reported to have said that Sarawak plans to send two journalists to Cambridge, United Kingdom to participate in an executive course related to journalism to improve the standard of local news reporting to be on par with international standards.
In conjunction with National Journalists Day (HAWANA) 2025, he also expressed his appreciation to the country's media practitioners.
The HAWANA 2025 Main Event, scheduled to take place on June 14 at Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre (KLWTC), will be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and is expected to be attended by approximately 1,000 media practitioners from around the world.
HAWANA, organised by the Ministry of Communications with the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) as the implementing agency, will feature various events including the Pantun Festival on May 31 and a pre-launch event with strategic partners at Wisma Bernama on June 3, as well as a media forum jointly organised with the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) on June 14.

Ringgit opens higher against greenback amid weaker US economic data
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opens marginally higher against the US dollar on Thursday, amid weaker-than-expected United States (US) economic data and tariff uncertainties, an analyst said. At 8 am, the local note inched up to 4.2410/2495 versus the greenback from Wednesday's close of 4.2435/2490. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the US Dollar Index (DXY) was down by 0.44 per cent to 98.787 points, as economic indicators surprised on the downside. He said the US Institute for Supply Management (ISM) Index for the services sector fell below the 50-point demarcation line to 49.9 in May, defying consensus estimates of 52.0 points. "Based on the survey response by the ISM, import tariff was the major source of uncertainties among businesses as it has raised the raw material prices, and some suppliers are holding back inventory given the tariff uncertainties. "This may lead to stronger emerging market currencies, including as the traders and investors would be reassessing the strength of the US economy, and therefore, Friday's Nonfarm Payroll will be another important barometer to look at," he told Bernama. He also noted that the upcoming Federal Open Market Committee meeting on June 16-17 would be another critical milestone, as the US Federal Reserve staff will issue their latest macroeconomic forecast for the next three years. At the opening, the ringgit traded lower against a basket of major currencies. It slid against the Japanese yen to 2.9705/9767 from Wednesday's close of 2.9444/9486, fell vis-a-vis the euro to 4.8428/8525 from 4.8300/8362, and depreciated against the British pound to 5.7466/7581 from 5.7427/7502 previously. The local note also traded mostly lower against its ASEAN peers. It traded flat versus the Philippine peso at 7.60/7.62, unchanged from its close on Wednesday. He said the figure remains below the 40 per cent target outlined in the National Transport Policy 2019–2030. 'The national transport policy from 2019 to 2030 is already in place.
