The Doobie Brothers can still stir up a bit of naughtiness

Telegraph20-07-2025
If a concert can be measured by how quickly a seated audience rises as one to dance, at the O2 Arena on Saturday night, The Doobie Brothers left things a little late. The crowd that more-or-less filled the venue's lower bowl – the top deck was curtained off – responded with only warm applause to the first dozen songs of a 19-song set. But as keyboardist and co-vocalist Michael McDonald struck up What A Fool Believes, a US number one in 1979, the atmosphere changed in an instant. Suddenly, the crowd were up and at 'em.
Half an hour later, as the eight-piece band closed their account with Takin' It to the Streets and Listen to the Music, in section 112, I even detected the distinctive aroma of marijuana. The scene may not have rivalled the days in the early 1970s when The Doobie Brothers were beloved of North Californian chapters of the Hells Angels, but at least they can still inspire a little bit of misbehaviour.
Melding hard-rock riffs, Latin rhythms, blue-eyed soul, and the musicianship of a great jam-band, their music defies categorisation. For this final date on the Doobie Brothers' UK tour, even the visuals were rather odd: a static stage backdrop featuring trees and fields and mountains made them look as though there were performing in front of a box containing the world's biggest jigsaw puzzle. The production, with its minimalist lighting rig, was easily the smallest I've ever seen at the O2.
Nevertheless, the songs filled the room with unerring ease. As befits a group bearing two members who look like wizards, when it comes to superlative musical alchemy, the Doobie Brothers are in a league with Steely Dan, Little Feat and The Allman Brothers Band. Somehow, they manage to combine three lead guitarists and four lead vocalists without once stepping on each other's toes. They can sing five -part harmonies. Watching in wonder as they swerved from Bossa Nova (Dependin' on You) to American roots rock (Rockin' Down the Highway) to light jazz (a tastefully stripped-down version of Amazing Grace), I could only marvel at the virtuosity of it all.
With the music doing all the talking, between songs, the group's rapport with the room stuttered like a nervous teenager on a first date. Time and again, the audience at the O2 were told how much their attendance was appreciated and how, you know, amazing it was for the band to be playing in London once more. For an outfit that has been performing live, off and on, for more than half a century, the almost total absence of quality chat was so inexplicable as to be strangely charming.
As the night entered its final throw, however, The Doobie Brothers at last found their speaking voice. In a summer in which British audiences have already seen Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder and Green Day all publicly address the goings on in the United States, Patrick Simmons, one of the band's founding members, spoke of his pleasure that the international tour 'had got us the hell out of' America. 'We believe in inclusivity, we believe in NATO, we believe in all of that stuff,' he said. Faint though it may have been, for a moment at least, 'the Doobies' showed just a glimpse of their old countercultural edge. Evidently, there's life in the old gods yet.

Lindsay Lohan shows off her taut complexion as she dazzles in a sequin gown while Jamie Lee Curtis wears an elegant red cape dress at the Freakier Friday UK premiere

The cast of Freakier Friday hit the red carpet in London on Thursday for the UK premiere of the hotly-anticipated film. Lindsay Lohan showed off her taut complexion as she joined her co-star Jamie Lee Curtis at the ODEON Luxe in Leicester Square, London. Continuing their promotional tour, the actress, 39, dazzled in a sequin gown while Jamie, 66, opted for an elegant red cape dress. Lindsay teamed her show-stopping dress, which featured an embellish bust, with a quirky guitar handbag - a nod to her character in the film. Meanwhile, Jamie looked incredible in the flowing bright red number that skimmed her ankles. She teamed it with a pair of classic black stiletto heels and shielded her eyes with aviator sunglasses. Freakier Friday - which is a sequel to the 2003 film - sees Lindsay Lohan and Jamie embroiled in quadruple chaos as they swap bodies again - 22 years after they first traded places. Shortly before the premiere Jamie revealed the real reason behind the long 22-year wait for a sequel to Freaky Friday. Fans had long hoped for a sequel to the iconic comedy but had an agonising wait as Freakier Friday is only now hitting cinemas. Now, Jamie Lee has revealed why there was such a long gap between the two releases as she admitted she has long had her eye on a follow-up movie. Appearing on Wednesday's The One Show, Jamie revealed they had to wait until was old enough to have a teenage child for the sequel premise to work. 'The truth is that Lindsay had to be old enough to have a 15-year-old daughter, people would ask me about the movie over and over again,' she shared. 'And finally someone in Australia said, ''well she is'' and I was like ''what do you mean?'' because I know her as this young girl so I don't know how old she is. 'So someone told me and I was, like ''Oh! well maybe we can make the movie. Let's go!''' Freakier Friday - which is a sequel to the 2003 film - sees Lindsay Lohan and Jamie embroiled in quadruple chaos as they swap bodies again - 22 years after they first traded places Lindsay was just 15 years old when she first portrayed Anna Coleman in Freaky Friday alongside Jamie Lee, who played her on-screen mother Tess Coleman. It follows the bickering mother and daughter after a Chinese restaurant fortune cookie mishap causes them to switch bodies, forcing them to live the other's life. Despite barely having been able to see eye-to-eye, the magical switch eventually allows them to see things from the other's point of view. The sequel will see the iconic pairing switch places once again, though this time there is quadruple chaos in store. Anna (Lindsay) is preparing to tie the knot with to Eric Davies (Manny Jacinto), but things are proving difficult as her teenage daughter Harper (Julia Butters) despises Eric's teenager Lily (Sophia Hammons). Harper highlights her disgust as she's heard reciting mock wedding vows, in which she brands her soon-to-be step-sister 'a little demon thing with an obnoxious accent'. A flash forward to Anna's bachelorette party sees her and mother Tess Coleman sit down with a fortune teller (Vanessa Bayer), who warns them they may learn another lesson by 'walking in each other's paths'. Laura Anderson put on a quirky display in a cut-out lilac gown Fans had an agonising wait for a sequel as Freakier Friday is only now hitting cinemas 22 years later, with Jamie Lee revealing it was because of Lindsay's age Anna and Tess then find themselves caught up in yet another 'freaky' body swap incident - only this time, it's not just between the two of them. The next morning, Anna discovers she's swapped bodies with daughter Harper, while Tess, aka 'Grandma', is now in the body of Anna's step-daughter Lily. Quadruple chaos then ensues as the foursome try to navigate their new roles with just days to go until the wedding. Chad Michael Murray is also returning to his role as Jake as the two teenage girls also hatch a plot to try and get Anna to reunite with her first love amid the wedding chaos.

Katie Price reveals her family's fears about her weight loss as her stepdad Paul voices his concern

Katie Price has revealed her family are worried about her drastic weight loss with her stepfather Paul voicing his concerns. The former glamour model, 47, has sparked concerns among fans over her rapid weight loss in recent months, revealing she weighed just 7st 12lb back in June. Speaking on her podcast The Katie Price Show, Katie has revealed that her family have echoed the concerns, but she insisted she is 'happy'. Katie appeared on the episode with her sister Sophie and her stepfather Paul, who voiced his concerns about her weight. 'Look how thin them legs are, terrible they are, my hand can go round them,' he worriedly shared. However, Katie replied: 'They're obsessed with my weight,' before Sophie also voiced her worries, adding: 'You are thin.' Katie then insisted that she is 'happy' but Paul replied: 'No it's not right, it's probably that vaping c**p.' The TV personality admitted her parents have shared their concern that she might have an eating disorder - which she denied. Sophie then told Katie that their mother Amy had called her to share her worries over her continuing weight loss. Sophie said: 'Mum called me the other day and said I'm going to have a word with Kate because she's too thin. I think mum saw a picture on Instagram and she wasn't happy.' However, Katie again replied: 'My legs do look thin, but I like it,' putting an end to the conversation. Katie has an extremely close relationship with her stepfather Paul, who has been in her life since she was three years old and she now shares his surname, Price. She has a distant relationship with her biological father Ray Infield, who left the family when she was an infant. Katie's mother Amy has previously admitted she believes her daughter suffers from body dysmorphia amid concerns over the star's weight loss. Body dysmorphia, or body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), is a condition where a person obsessively worries about apparent flaws in their appearance. Speaking to Vanessa Feltz on her TalkTV show in 2023, Amy confessed that she 'absolutely hates it' when Katie goes under the knife. When Vanessa asked her for her feelings on Katie's surgeries, Amy said: 'I absolutely hate it and she knows it. 'I think she, and I got her to admit it the other day, "you've got body dysmorphia". I don't know what it is. 'You know you look all right but why do you think you need to tweak this, tweak that or have a tattoo or change her hair?' Last year, Katie explained that she has never been happy with her body while speaking on The Louis Theroux Podcast. 'I always said I haven't got body dysmorphia but there's definitely something, I don't know what it is,' she shared. 'I've never looked in the mirror and thought I'm pretty or whatever.' Katie has undergone an array of procedures over the years, including rhinoplasty, a silhouette facelift, 3D, veneers, a face lift, and lip fillers and Botox. But the media personality admitted that a botched Brazilian butt lift (BBL) remains her most painful and regrettable procedure to date. Opening up to Katherine Ryan on her What's My Age Again? podcast in June, she said: 'I tried that BBL abroad where they take your own fat and put it in your bum.

MAFS feud explodes as exes demand they're kept apart at boozy bash – and groom cosies up to Love Island star girlfriend

A MARRIED At First Sight feud completely exploded as a pair of exes demanded that they be kept apart at a boozy bash. A number of stars from the Channel 4 reality show attended the National Reality Television Awards last night. 6 6 6 On the ninth series of MAFS UK UK, Lacey Martin and Nathan Campbell made it all the way to the final renewal ceremony. However, the duo split up after the show came to an end and Nathan then claimed she told him to "fake" their romance for fame. Following their acrimonious split, he then coupled up with former Love Island star Abi Moores, 26. Now, as all three of the reality stars attended the glitzy ceremony, it seems things are more awkward than ever between all the personalities. As Nathan cosied up to his new girlfriend, organisers were forced to separate him from Lacey by seating him on a different table. A source told The Sun: "Lacey and Nathan had to be kept away from each other at the National Reality TV Awards. "It was chaos as he was supposed to be on the MAFS table but she wouldn't have sat there if he was there. "He was all over his girlfriend Abi, so they had to be sat at a separate table." The eyewitness added: "It was daggers across the room the whole night." The pair also nearly ran into each other on the red carpet earlier in the evening. MAFS UK's Nathan reveals first date with Love Island star Abi Moores almost ended in disaster as they go public with romance Nathan himself remarked that it was "awkward" to The Sun just after she made her way past him and Abi to get to another part of the venue. Nathan and Lacey continued to swerve each other throughout the star-studded event which was attended by stars including Vanessa Feltz and Strictly pro Nadiya Bychkova. During one part of the ceremony at London 's Porchester Hall, the MAFS cast went to get some fresh air outside of the venue. Nathan and Abi couldn't keep their hands off of each other as they looked cosy at one end of the smoking area. Mafs couples that have stood the test of time Loved-up Tayah Victoria and Adam Aveling of series six fame had the first Mafs baby. The pair couldn't keep their hands off each other on the programme and quickly found their feet in the outside world, moving into Adam's Doncaster home. Just 18 months after meeting, the couple welcomed their daughter Beau. Season five couple Michelle Walder and Owen Jenkins also managed to make their marriage work away from the cameras and had their first child in December. Teacher Michelle, 29, has no regrets about taking part in the experiment. She told us: 'I just feel very lucky and thankful that it has worked out - and excited for everything to come.' Michelle and Owen were both sick of dating apps when they applied in 2019. Owen recalled: 'I had been out for some drinks with a friend after work. "While he was out for a cigarette I was scrolling on Instagram waiting for him to come back in. 'The MAFS advert was the last thing I saw, and I joked, 'Wouldn't it be funny if I signed up?' 'A few beers later when I was back at home I sent in the application, and the rest is history.' Another couple to make Mafs UK history is Zoe Clifton and Jenna Robinson. Despite a slight rocky start, where they clashed over Jenna's vegan lifestyle, the show's first same sex pairing are still going strong. They even have a successful podcast together called Life With a Pod. Jenna shed light on being involved in the show earlier this year when she told us: "We're not legally married, and I never felt like we were. I definitely feel the process makes you take the relationship a lot more seriously and having the help of the experts… if you can survive that process it sets a firm foundation for a long-lasting relationship." However at the other end, Lacey was present as she spoke to a mystery pal on the phone. She puffed on a cigarette as she held her mobile device next to her ear as Nathan and Abi tentatively chatted to pals. In a picture sent to The Sun, only one person was seen to be standing between the former cast members as they attempted to separate. An additional source told us: "Lacey was on the phone in the smoking area, and it looked as though Nathan and Abi were actively keeping their distance from her. "She previously made her way past him on the red carpet in what looked like an extremely uncomfortable situation for everyone involved. "Nathan was being interviewed as she scooched past him and made a little quip as a distraction from the situation. The eyewitness added: "Things looked even worse when they were just steps from each other in the smoking area. "It was just so awkward for all of them throughout the evening and it was clear from all their actions that there is still bad blood there." The Sun has approached representatives of both Lacey and Nathan for comment. 6 6 6
