The CDC is sounding the alarm on prediabetes in adolescents. The latest report suggests that about 1 in 3 kids has prediabetes. This means they have elevated blood sugar levels that could lead to Type 2 diabetes if not addressed.
This number is even more concerning when compared to previous estimates. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey found that only 28% of adolescents showed these signs in the 2015-2016 survey, and only 20% in the one before that, according to StatNews.
At this stage, the disease may exhibit no symptoms, making it easy to miss. This is crucial because at this stage it can still be reversed with intervention, so parents should be alert.
What Should Parents Watch For?
The latest numbers say that about 1 in 3 adolescents is at risk, and more sedentary lifestyles are likely a factor. Prediabetes doesn't always progress into full-blown diabetes, but when it does, the effects can be very serious, so early intervention is key.
Your child's doctor may raise concerns about blood sugar levels at their regular checkups, but there are risk factors that you can be aware of, too.
Simply being in adolescence can be a risk factor, as hormone changes (which occur in all teens, but particularly in girls) can affect how effectively the body uses insulin, according to the CDC. Being overweight is another risk factor, even if the teen is otherwise healthy.
One currently prevalent risk factor, and one that's relatively easy to address, is inactivity. Few kids get sufficient physical activity, and that's a significant health risk.
The Genetic Factor In Diabetes
Some risk factors for diabetes and prediabetes are outside your and your child's control.
Some people have a greater genetic predisposition to diabetes. If there is a family history of diabetes, you should be aware, because it means an increased risk for your child (and yourself).
Some ethnic and racial groups also have a higher risk, including Black, Native American, Hispanic, Asian American, and Pacific Islander.
A child is also at higher risk if their mother had gestational diabetes during pregnancy.
If any of the above applies to your child, you'll want to use heightened vigilance.
What Should You Ask Your Pediatrician?
Pediatricians may start testing your child's blood sugar at around age 10, or at puberty if it comes earlier. Then, a typical schedule involves checking every three years.
However, if your child has risk factors, your doctor may perform this test more frequently. Alternatively, if you're concerned, you can request a screening.
You should also consult your pediatrician before making any drastic changes to your diet and exercise regimen. While getting active is important, and healthy eating can help reduce the risk, your child also needs nutrients for their growing and developing body. Therefore, any changes should be made cautiously and with guidance.
What Sort Of Lifestyle Changes Should We Consider?
As mentioned, no major lifestyle changes should be made without consulting your doctor.
However, everyone can make an effort to be a little healthier, and changes for your child will work best if they're done as a family. These changes can be simple and gradual, and don't have to be onerous.
One tiny change that can make a significant difference is having family meals without screens. Eating in front of a screen and eating alone change our intake and make us more likely to ignore our body's cues when it's sated.
Changing food choices helps, too. That doesn't mean you need to eliminate all snacks, treats, and sugar at once! You can set limits on sodas and other sugary drinks, and start providing more vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Plan ahead for shopping — it's hard to impulsively eat foods that aren't in the house!
You can also work on getting your whole family up and moving. If Mom and Dad are on board together, it will be easier to get the kids active. This can mean going hiking or biking as a family, or it can mean playing catch, or taking a dance class. Whatever it looks like for your family, joining in together will make it easier for your child.

The San Francisco 49ers tight end broke the news on NFL Network Tuesday. He then shared that the ban has left him "distraught." Kittle did so while crashing the set of an NFL Network hit at 49ers training camp during an interview with his teammate Fred Warner. "Our team got a memo today that smelling salts and ammonia packets were made illegal in the NFL, and I've been distraught all day." Kittle then joked that he was contemplating extreme measures in response to the rule change. "I considered retirement," he said, with a smile. "We've got to come up with a middle ground here guys. Somebody help me out. Somebody come up with a good idea." So why is Kittle so "distraught?" "I'm an every drive guy," Kittle said regarding his smelling salts use. "I'm an every drive guy." Kittle drew the line on using smelling salts for each play, declaring that's "too much." So why the ban? NFL Network's Mike Garafolo later shared the memo that got Kittle so worked up. It appears that Kittle's use of smelling salts on "every drive" might not be a good idea. Citing a 2024 memo from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the NFL explained its reasoning for banning ammonia inhalants (AIs), an umbrella term that includes smelling salts. From the memo: "The FDA noted potential negative effects from AI use," the memo states. "AIs also have the potential to mask certain neurologic signs and symptoms, including some potential signs of concussion. "As a result, the NFL head, neck and spine committee recommended prohibiting the use of AIs for any purpose during play in the NFL." The memo clarified that the AI category encompasses 'any form of 'smelling salts'' and prohibits any member of a team from administering or providing AIs to players at any point during a game. The FDA memo that the NFL referenced detailed reported adverse effects of using unapproved AIs that include "shortness of breath, seizures, migraines, vomiting, diarrhea, and fainting from consumers after using these types of products, possibly purchased through various websites." Smelling salts are traditionally used to treat fainting victims, but have apparently become popular among athletes — particularly football and hockey players — as a perceived energy boost. This appears to be Kittle's preferred use. The NFL isn't the first sports organization to ban the use of smelling salts. Hockey Quebec, a branch of Hockey Canada that oversees amateur hockey in the province, banned smelling salts in February, citing concern over their use by youth players.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has canceled nearly $500 million of grants and contracts for developing mRNA vaccines, the Department of Health and Human Services announced on Tuesday. It is the latest blow to research on this technology. In May, the Department of Health and Human Services revoked a nearly $600 million contract to the drugmaker Moderna to develop a vaccine against bird flu. The new cancellations dismayed scientists, many of whom regard mRNA shots as the best option for protecting Americans in a pandemic. 'This is a bad day for science,' said Scott Hensley, an immunologist at the University of Pennsylvania who has been working to develop an mRNA vaccine against influenza. The health department said in its release that the cancellations affected 22 projects managed by the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, or BARDA. With this move, the department is 'undermining our ability to rapidly counter future biological threats,' said Rick Bright, a flu expert who was ousted as chief of BARDA during the first Trump administration and resigned from a lesser position in protest. Unlike traditional vaccines, which can take years to develop and test, mRNA shots can be made within months and quickly altered as the virus changes. Mr. Kennedy has been sharply critical of the technology. In a video posted on social media on Tuesday, he claimed incorrectly that mRNA vaccines do not protect against respiratory illnesses like Covid and the flu, that they drive viruses to evolve and that a single mutation in a virus renders the vaccine ineffective. 'As the pandemic showed us, mRNA vaccines don't perform well against viruses that infect the upper respiratory tract,' he says in the video. 'By issuing this wildly incorrect statement, the secretary is demonstrating his commitment to his long-held goal of sowing doubts about all vaccines,' said Jennifer Nuzzo, director of the Pandemic Center at the Brown University School of Public Health. 'Had we not used these lifesaving mRNA vaccines to protect against severe illness, we would have had millions of more Covid deaths,' she said. The health department said it will favor other types of shots over those using mRNA, like whole-cell vaccines. That technology is more than 100 years old. The United States has not used a whole-cell vaccine for whooping cough since the 1990s because it was potent but harsh, often setting off high fevers and seizures. Mr. Kennedy himself assailed the leading international vaccine organization, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, for continuing to use the whole-cell vaccine in low-income countries, citing it as the reason he was pulling funding from the organization.

Jill Smola is a 75-year-old retiree who understands the power of human connection, having spent her working days as an aide taking care of the elderly. "We would play games, put puzzles together," Smola told CBS News. She said human interaction was important, "so that they had somebody to talk to. That they just weren't sitting in a chair doing nothing." But these days, it's Smola sitting in a chair — a widow with a lung condition who lives alone. She says she doesn't get that human interaction anymore. "I can go weeks on end" without seeing someone, she said. Smola can't drive anymore and rarely leaves her Orlando home. But recently, she did gain a new companion: an AI-powered chatbot. She uses the chatbot, called ElliQ, to "visit" exotic places and play trivia. Smola talks to the chatbot up to five hours a day, and says the connection is truly meaningful. She said that people who might find the situation sad "don't understand." "I'd rather talk to a human being, but that's not possible for me, except if I get on the phone, so I enjoy her," Smola said, jokingly adding: "I enjoy her better than my daughter." Several AI companions have recently hit the market, including ElliQ, which normally costs $59 a month to use. Smola received the chatbot for free with funding from a federal grant. Thalia Porteny, an ethicist at Columbia University who studies seniors and AI used in the medical space, told CBS News that "loneliness is rampant," with one in four older adults saying they feel isolated. But Porteny also said she's concerned about the possibility that reliance on these chatbots could backfire and create even more isolation. "This could really go the wrong way if it's not deployed in an ethical and responsible way," she said. But for now, Smola said ElliQ is "the best thing that happened to me, because I always have somebody around. Even though it may not be a human, it's good enough for me."
