OXON HILL, Md. (AP) — Faizan Zaki nearly threw away his opportunity to go from runner-up to champion at the Scripps National Spelling Bee with a shocking moment of overconfidence. Given a second chance, he seized the title of best speller in the English language.
The 13-year-old from Allen, Texas, who lost in a lightning-round tiebreaker last year, outlasted eight other accomplished spellers to win the title on Thursday night, including two that he let back into the competition after his own careless flub.
Told to take a deep breath before his final word, 'eclaircissement,' he didn't ask a single question before spelling it correctly, and he pumped his fists and collapsed to the stage after saying the final letter.

(AP) — Nolan Sailors drove in four runs and fell a single shy of hitting for the cycle as No. 3 seed Creighton rolled to an 11-4 victory over second-seeded Kansas in the nightcap of the Fayetteville Regional on Friday. Creighton (42-14) will play No. 1 seed Arkansas on Saturday. Kansas (43-16) plays an elimination game against No. 4 seed North Dakota State to begin the day. Sailors had a two-run double in the middle of a seven-run sixth inning to help the Bluejays pull away from a 3-3 tie. He drew a bases-loaded walk when Creighton scored twice in the third to grab a 3-2 lead. He hit a two-out solo homer in the seventh for Creighton's final run. Sailors tripled leading off the fifth but was stranded. Creighton's top three batters in the order — Tate Gillen, Matt Scherrman and Sailors — had three hits apiece and combined to go 9 for 15 with six RBIs and five runs scored. ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Marcus Semien hit a two-run homer and matched his career high with four hits, Jack Leiter pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings for the first time in 15 major league starts and the Texas Rangers routed the St. Louis Cardinals 11-1 on Friday night. Leiter (4-2) allowed three singles and matched a career high with six strikeouts, throwing a career-high 96 pitches. Semien drove in three runs. He was 10 for 70 in his previous 21 games. Sam Haggerty tied his career best with three hits and had three RBIs, Josh Jung also had three hits and three RBIs, and Wyatt Langford hit a two-run home run.
