Creighton breezes to 11-4 victory over Kansas in nightcap of Fayetteville Regional

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — Nolan Sailors drove in four runs and fell a single shy of hitting for the cycle as No. 3 seed Creighton rolled to an 11-4 victory over second-seeded Kansas in the nightcap of the Fayetteville Regional on Friday.
Creighton (42-14) will play No. 1 seed Arkansas on Saturday. Kansas (43-16) plays an elimination game against No. 4 seed North Dakota State to begin the day.
Sailors had a two-run double in the middle of a seven-run sixth inning to help the Bluejays pull away from a 3-3 tie. He drew a bases-loaded walk when Creighton scored twice in the third to grab a 3-2 lead. He hit a two-out solo homer in the seventh for Creighton's final run. Sailors tripled leading off the fifth but was stranded.
Creighton's top three batters in the order — Tate Gillen, Matt Scherrman and Sailors — had three hits apiece and combined to go 9 for 15 with six RBIs and five runs scored.
Ian Koosman (9-4) allowed one run on two hits in four innings of relief to get the win. Dominic Cancellieri started and allowed three runs on four hits in four innings.
Dominic Voegele (7-5) surrendered seven runs on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings in the loss.
Kansas is playing in the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time and first since 2014. The Jayhawks first appearance came in 1993 when they advanced to their only College World Series.
Creighton has played in 12 tournaments with one CWS appearance in 1991.

The 13th-seeded Svitolina, who is from Ukraine, is a three-time Grand Slam semifinalist — getting that far twice at Wimbledon and once at the U.S. Open — but is 0-4 so far in the quarterfinals at Roland-Garros. In the ensuing tiebreaker, Paolini once again was a single point from winning — and once again failed to come through, this time when Svitolina ended a 14-stroke exchange with a volley winner. From there, Svitolina was in control, racing to a 4-0 lead in the third set. She is quite comfortable on clay, where she has earned a tour-leading 16 of her 27 wins this season. Road accident in northern Nigeria kills 22 athletes returning from a sports festival
ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — A bus veered off a bridge in Nigeria's northern state of Kano, killing at least 22 athletes returning home from a sports festival and leaving several other passengers injured, the state's governor said. The cause of the accident, which happened on Saturday, was not immediately known. The athletes had taken part in the Nigerian National Sports Festival in the southern state of Ogun over the last week. The driver appeared to lose control of the bus and the vehicle, with over 30 passengers, plunged off the Chiromawa Bridge on the Kano-Zaria expressway, according to Abba Kabir Yusuf, the governor of Kano. Survivors of the crash were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Yusuf said the athletes, who were accompanied by their coaches and sporting officials, were representing Kano at the sports festival, a major multi-sports event that bringing together athletes from the country's 35 states every two years. The governor declared Monday a day of mourning for the state. The families of the victims are to receive 1 million naira (about $630) and food supplies as support, Kano's deputy governor, Aminu Gwarzo, said. Road accidents are frequent in Africa's most populous country, in part due to poor road conditions and lax enforcement of traffic laws. In March, at least six people died near Nigeria's capital of Abuja after a trailer crashed into parked vehicles and burst into flames.
