Jodhpur: Nearly 24 children fell sick of dehydration during the state-level Independence Day function at Barkatullah Stadium here Friday morning. The incident triggered panic among the administration, and 13 of the sick children were rushed to MDM Hospital.
Intense humidity and dehydration due to lack of drinking water were said to be the reason for the children falling sick.
CM Bhajan Lal Sharma hoisted the flag at 9am in the main ceremony, which was followed by a cultural programme. Around 11am, during a performance by school children, the condition of about 24 kids worsened. "We tried to restore them by providing first aid on the spot. However, health of 13 of them did not improve, so they were rushed to MDM Hospital by ambulance," said an official.
Superintendent (MDM Hospital) Vikas Rajpurohit said 13 children were of both genders, aged 13 to 18 years. "They had mild dehydration, so they were treated accordingly and discharged in about an hour," he said. tnn

CM hosp visit after heat lays kids low at I-Day event

Kolkata: Heat and humidity on Friday led to 39 girl students falling ill immediately after the I-Day Red Road parade in which they participated. All children were taken to the SSKM hospital, prompting a worried CM Mamata Banerjee to rush there and tend to the children personally. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now All children are safe and have been discharged, with only one girl requiring saline infusion. Kolkata was warm and humid on Independence Day with the maximum temperature touching 32.2°C. Humidity was high at 94%, and outdoor conditions were uncomfortable. It was humid and warm since there has been no consistent rain over the last five-six days, barring occasional short spells, and the cloud cover has moved away from the city. This has made the mercury to shoot up again, after a short respite, said weathermen. Speaking to reporters on Friday after meeting the girls at the SSKM hospital, the CM said: "They were given breakfast, but many of them did not have food. Also, there was this performance anxiety in their mind. Several had dehydration tendencies. The psychological effect of seeing one of their friends fall ill led to the unease among them. Only one girl – Fatema – was unwell. She had to be administered saline. Her oxygen saturation is at 99%. But she is also recovering. Everyone will be discharged once the doctors give their nod. A medical team is on standby. The teachers are with them, the parents have been informed." At the hospital, CM personally fed the students sweets. Noticing that some girls had their hairs tied up, she untied them. "They were all sweaty. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now I untied their hair, and loosened up their uniforms. But I spoke to everyone. They were all sitting when I left," the CM said, informing the students were from the schools in Malda and Alipurduar, and from Sakhawat Memorial and Bhowanipore Girls in Kolkata. The CM also had to comply with multiple selfie requests by the students who spoke with her holding on to her hands. The doctors have advised caution due to the heat and humidity in Kolkata. Prolonged exposure to the heat and humidity can trigger heat-induced unconsciousness, nausea and vomiting, said intensivist Sauren Panja. "The body loses fluids quickly in the prevailing conditions, and the body temperature rises. Once it crosses the threshold level, the heat-control mechanism fails, and our system starts malfunctioning. It can lead to heatstroke and even death," warned Panja.

Doctors warn of rising dual infections during monsoon

1 2 Pune: City doctors have warned patients contracting multiple infections simultaneously like typhoid, influenza and dengue this monsoon, leading to severe symptoms and increased complication risk, making management more challenging. Infectious disease experts said such "dual infections" were not uncommon at this time of year. Dr Mahesh Kumar Manohar Lakhe, infectious diseases expert with Sahyadri Hospitals, said, "I've seen cases of typhoid and dengue co-infection, confirmed through NS1 antigen and blood culture tests. In one instance, a traveller even had dengue and malaria together. These dual infections can be challenging, as both diseases can impact the liver, exacerbating the condition. " Dr Devashish Desai, consultant for infectious diseases at Ruby Hall Clinic, said dengue admissions were significantly lower this year compared to 2024, but the admitted patients were often in critical condition with severe dehydration and capillary leak. "Over the past three weeks, Pune has seen a surge in influenza cases, particularly the H3N2 strain of Influenza A. Many patients are presenting with symptoms like fever, sore throat, runny nose and cough. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo What's notable is that some patients are developing sequential or co-infections. Some are catching influenza right after recovering from dengue, or vice versa. I've seen dengue patients develop influenza-like symptoms just as they're about to be discharged, while others with persistent fever after influenza are later diagnosed with dengue. These co-infections are still relatively rare, about one case a week." "This includes avoiding mosquito bites by using repellents, wearing full-sleeved clothing and eliminating stagnant water around homes. People should drink only boiled or filtered water to prevent typhoid, wash hands before eating and avoid street food during the monsoon," a specialist said. Dr Ameet Dravid, infectious diseases expert at Noble and Poona Hospitals, told TOI, "We have had an H1N1 and Covid-19 co-infection case this season. The patient, who presented with upper respiratory tract symptoms, was vaccinated against both influenza and Covid-19 and therefore experienced only a mild illness. In unvaccinated individuals, however, one of the viruses can dominate, potentially leading to viral pneumonia and a poorer prognosis.
