Contenders to replace Thomas Frank as Brentford boss after his move to Tottenham

Brentford are on the hunt for a new head coach after Thomas Frank left to take over at Tottenham.
Here, the PA news agency takes a look at the candidates to replace Frank, who had held the position since 2018.
Kieran McKenna
Town fans,
Thank you. 💙
Today marks the end of a challenging season, but tomorrow marks day one of a challenge we will attack, together.

Relegation from the Premier League has failed to tarnish McKenna's reputation as one of the brightest British coaches around. The fact McKenna guided Ipswich into the top flight after they were in League One as recently as 2023 highlights his undoubted talent. With the ability to mix free-flowing football with pragmatism, the 39-year-old could be a good fit for Brentford and was linked with several prestigious vacancies last summer.
Kjetil Knutsen
Bodo/Glimt boss Knutsen has earned admirers for his work at the Norwegian club, where he has taken them from Scandinavian minnows to Europa League semi-finalists. Knutsen has won four Eliteserien titles during his seven-year spell and been mentioned as a candidate for roles at Rangers, Celtic and Leeds in recent seasons. Could the prospect of a Premier League job tempt Knutsen to leave Bodo?
Kasper Hjulmand
If Brentford want to keep some Danish continuity at Gtech Community Stadium, they could try to replace Frank with compatriot Hjulmand. The former Denmark boss has been out of work since he left the national team last summer, but is a familiar face to certain members of the Bees' squad. Captain Christian Norgaard, Mathias Jensen and Mikkel Damsgaard were all regulars under Hjulmand, who impressively managed his nation to the Euro 2020 semi-finals under emotional circumstances after Christian Eriksen's cardiac arrest.
Danny Rohl
A left-field option given his lack of Premier League experience, but Danny Rohl has masterfully navigated his first managerial role. Sheffield Wednesday were destined for relegation before Rohl, 36, turned around a sinking ship and last season helped them finish a respectable 12th place. The German coach has been linked with a string of Bundesliga jobs.
Ange Postecoglou
Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties.
— Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) June 6, 2025
Ange Postecoglou may be due a deserved break after a roller-coaster two years at Tottenham and even though him switching jobs with Frank seems unlikely, stranger things have happened. Postecoglou was dismissed by Spurs after a poor Premier League campaign, but ended the club's 17-year trophy drought and has won silverware in virtually every job. Would the Australian be tempted by an instant return to England's top flight?

Gary Neville responds to Marcus Rashford comments on Man Utd with hostile reaction

Gary Neville has taken Ruben Amorim's side after Marcus Rashford criticised Manchester United by claiming they have struggled due to a lack of a coherent long-term plan Gary Neville has told Marcus Rashford to concentrate on Barcelona rather than comment on Ruben Amorim's work at Manchester United. Rashford has left behind his boyhood club to join Barca on loan for the 2025-26 season, but couldn't help giving his take on the rebuilding job Amorim has on his hands at Old Trafford. ‌ Rashford had some damning criticism for United, claiming they can't hide behind the excuse of being a club in transition. 'To start a transition you have to make a plan and stick to it,' he said last week on The Rest is Football Podcast. ‌ 'This is where I speak about being realistic about what your situation is. We've had that many different managers, ideas and strategies in order to win that you end up in no man's land.' ‌ His words came up during a conversation on Sky Sports ' Monday Night Football as Neville spoke about Amorim's situation. 'This season I think the manager to watch is the United manager,' Neville said. 'All eyes are on him. Can he do it? He had a horrible start to his United career. He didn't want the job part way through last season.' Presenter David Jones interjected: 'Do you not think because of that he gets this season, whatever happens?' 'Oh no I don't think it'll be that easy,' responded Neville. 'I think if he's down in the bottom half of the table he'll be under massive pressure.' Again Jones interjected, this time asking: 'What about what Marcus Rashford said the other day, that Manchester United have got to come up with a plan and stick with it somewhere, haven't they?' ‌ HAVE YOUR SAY! What do you make of Gary Neville's comments? Comment below. Neville held up his hand, waved it, and, somewhat damningly remarked: 'Let's ignore that, because I don't want to go into Marcus Rashford comments tonight. He was there at the club for 10 years and had his opportunity to impact the club. Ruben Amorim, this year, I think will do a good job. Marcus should concentrate on Barcelona.' Continuing more broadly on Amorim's United, and what he'd seen from their opening game of the season – the 1-0 defeat by Arsenal on Sunday – Neville offered: 'Yesterday was the first time I watched that formation out on Old Trafford, where I thought 'right, we've got a chance here, that worked'. ‌ 'He'd got a few different players in, he'd got [Mason] Mount back, got Luke Shaw in at left centre-back, that helped and I think it was the first time, it's a difficult, rare system, it needs specialists, but when you saw [Matheus] Cunha play, saw Mount play, saw Shaw at left centre-back - there was a balance! Casemiro looked a better player all of a sudden! Just straight away he looked a better player.' Laughing, Jamie Carragher interrupted: 'It was one game!' United continue their Premier League campaign against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday.

Tuesday's briefing: Leeds win opener and Cristian Romero extends Tottenham stay

Tottenham ended rumours around new captain Cristian Romero by securing him on a new deal while Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest were among those to splash the cash. Meanwhile, Russell Martin insists Rangers have it in them to seal a place in the group stages of the Champions League despite a distinctly underwhelming start to their domestic campaign. Lukas Nmecha converted a controversial late penalty on his debut as Leeds made a winning return to the Premier League by beating Everton 1-0 at Elland Road. Second-half substitute Nmecha held his nerve to fire home an 84th-minute winner from the spot and seal Leeds a deserved win after Everton captain James Tarkowski was adjudged to have handled. Everton strongly protested against the penalty decision, which came after Anton Stach's thumping shot struck Tarkowski on the arm, but referee Chris Kavanagh's decision was quickly upheld by VAR. Tarkowski described the decision as 'bizarre', while Everton boss David Moyes, who confronted Kavanagh at full-time, said on Sky Sports: 'The goal's completely wrong and really harsh. 'It took a deflection, and.. Tarky would have had to get his arm chopped off. It was a poor decision. VAR had a chance to get that decision right and fair, and I felt like it wasn't fair.' Tottenham captain Cristian Romero has ended uncertainty over his future by signing a new long-term contract at the club. The 27-year-old Argentina centre-back, who had been heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid earlier this summer, was named as Spurs' new skipper on Wednesday following the departure of Son Heung-min. Romero had entered the final two years of his previous deal, but has signed new terms running until 2029, the PA news agency understands. Romero, who starred in Tottenham's Europa League triumph in May, said: 'I'm very happy here in the club. For me this club is the best in the world. 'After winning the Europa League, it's like a special season now. We want to win. Maybe why not win again this season? Another trophy with the club is important for everyone.' Ben Gannon Doak. The newest recruit at #afcb 🍒 — AFC Bournemouth 🍒 (@afcbournemouth) August 18, 2025 Bournemouth have completed the signing of winger Ben Doak from Premier League rivals Liverpool in a deal worth up to £25million. The 19-year-old Scotland international has agreed a five-year contract. Doak spent last season on loan at Championship club Middlesbrough, scoring three goals and registering seven assists in 24 appearances. Bournemouth are understood to have paid an initial £20m and could spend a further £5m in add-ons as they reinvest some of the funds received from a series of lucrative summer departures. Russell Martin insisted Rangers should not be fazed by the prospect of joining Europe's elite in this season's Champions League as he rallied his players for the first leg of their play-off tie against Club Brugge at Ibrox. Gers have had a difficult start to the campaign and it was suggested that – after proving out of their depth when they last qualified in 2022 – they are ill-equipped for the continent's premier competition and would be better suited to dropping into the Europa League instead. Martin dismissed any such notion and only sees positives associated with making it into the Champions League within three months of his appointment. 'I think the belief it would give the players would be massive,' he said. 'I think what it would do for the football club financially would be huge. 'So I think if we were able to do it, which I really believe we can, if we can do it and qualify for it, I think it would be brilliant.' The start of a new story. I'm very proud to be joining Nottingham Forest. Thank you for your welcome, I can't wait to discover the packed City Ground! — Arnaud Kalimuendo (@a_kalimuendo) August 18, 2025 Nottingham Forest have taken their summer spending close to £100million in the space of three days with striker Arnaud Kalimuendo following Omari Hutchinson and James McAtee to the City Ground. Kalimuendo has signed a five-year deal after Forest concluded a deal with Rennes to sign the 23-year-old striker, who scored 18 goals for the Ligue 1 side last season, in a deal worth £25million. The deal comes after a weekend that had already seen Forest spend a club record £37.5m to sign Hutchinson from Ipswich and £30m to get midfielder McAtee from Manchester City. 'When I heard about the interest from Forest, I was honoured,' Kalimuendo said. 'This is a proud moment for me, joining a team who had a strong season last year and a club with great history.' Rangers look to move closer to a lucrative place in this season's Champions League as they face Belgian side Club Brugge in the first leg of their qualifying round clash at Ibrox. A busy League One programme includes Stevenage's bid to extend the division's last remaining 100 per cent record to four games when they travel to Port Vale. In League Two, pace-setters Crewe and Chesterfield look to keep winning with away games at Fleetwood and Gillingham respectively.
