M4 takedown nabs syndicate behind break-ins across Ballito and Durban
A high-speed takedown on the M4 last Friday led to the arrest of six men believed to be behind a string of housebreakings along the North Coast and greater Durban area.
The group – allegedly part of a sophisticated housebreaking syndicate – were apprehended during a coordinated operation involving Marshall Security's Special Operations Team, the Durban North Saps Trio Crimes Unit, Crime Intelligence and Durban North Crime Prevention.
The arrests followed months of surveillance and intelligence gathering. The suspects are linked to more than ten break-ins across Ballito, Salt Rock, Glenashley, La Lucia, Greenwood Park and Umbilo.
According to Marshall Security, the group used professional tactics to access homes – climbing through roofs, disabling alarm systems and ransacking properties while residents were away. Stolen items typically included jewellery, laptops, safes, televisions, firearms and watches.
Marshall Security began tracking the suspects on Friday when they entered Ballito. Officers followed their movements south toward Glenashley and La Lucia. Once their identities were confirmed, two vehicles were intercepted on the M4 near the Virginia off-ramp.
A search uncovered housebreaking tools, gloves and backpacks filled with jewellery and watches, believed to be stolen. Investigations are ongoing, with police working to link the group to additional cases.
Locally, Ballito Neighbourhood Watch chairman Morné Steffens confirmed a recent spike in opportunistic crime, particularly in Marion, Zen and Sandra Roads.
'A repeat offender, previously arrested several times, is suspected of several incidents,' said Steffens.
'This individual typically enters through unlocked doors or windows and flees before detection. In many cases, residents had failed to activate alarms or perimeter beams.'
Vehicle theft is also on the rise, with high-end SUVs, particularily Toyota Fortuners, being targeted. Criminals reportedly gain access by removing front passenger windows. Steffens urged residents to be cautious about where they park and to invest in added security.
Despite the increase in incidents, Steffens praised the partnership between police, private security, the Community Policing Forum (CPF) and the Neighbourhood Watch.
'Ballito is fortunate to have excellent security services and committed volunteers. However, our patrollers are stretched thin. We urgently need more residents to volunteer for just two hours a week or every second week,' he said.

Vehicle recovered after Avoca hijacking
TRACKER SA and members of Marshall Security's Special Operations Team helped in the recovery of a Mercedes-Benz that was hijacked in Mill Road in Avoca on Saturday (July 26) at about 07:00. 'The victim was approached by four armed suspects wearing balaclavas and robbed of her vehicle. 'At approximately 16:25, we were alerted by a vehicle tracking company to assist in locating a white VW Polo reported stolen last month from the Cornubia area. Our response team began tracking the vehicle using real-time location updates provided by the tracking company,' explained Swift Private Security spokesperson Sanveer Sooklall. 'With co-ordinated efforts the vehicle was successfully located, and one suspect was apprehended on the scene. Members of Greenwood Park SAPS arrived and took custody of the suspect and the recovered vehicle for further investigation and processing.' Police captain commits suicide after killing girlfriend and her brother
Gauteng police have opened an inquest docket in Protea after a police captain committed suicide after he allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend and her brother. The incident happened in Protea, Soweto, on Saturday night, 26 July. South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in Gauteng, colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said it is alleged that the group was at home celebrating the birthday of the captain's girlfriend, who is also a police officer. 'The captain reportedly called the girlfriend to the side, and that is when people saw him draw a firearm, and shoot her and her brother dead while three other civilians sustained injuries. He then turned the gun on himself,' Nevhuhulwi explained. Two counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder and an inquest docket were opened at Protea police station for further investigation. Meanwhile Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni expressed his sadness at this incident and sent his heartfelt condolences to the affected families. 'We give our members these tools to protect themselves against criminals, so it is very disheartening to see the very same tools being used to kill their loved ones. I urge our members to make use of employee health and wellness facilities to assist them to deal with any problems they may be facing, whether work or personal, EHW is always there', Mthombeni said. Recently, the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) called on the SAPS to strengthen its mental health and wellness support programmes for officers, following a tragic incident involving one of its own. A female police constable, Ntombethemba Mgidi, appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate's Court on Monday, 22 July, after being arrested in connection with the fatal shootings of two fellow officers in the Mbayimbayi area near Murchison on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast last week. #Letter: Pickpocketed and robbed of R4 000
Sheffield resident Guy Daines writes: On Sunday, July 13, at about 11.30am, I went to the Capitec branch ATM at Ballito Lifestyle Centre with my son's card. While in the queue to take a balance and draw cash, I was pushed from the front and back and before I knew it, the card was missing. It was a very professional hit job. I went to a security guard for help but he looked on helplessly. Five minutes later, R4 000 was taken from the account via an ATM at the Shell garage. On Monday, I went into the bank and reported the incident after cancelling the card on Sunday. The bank said I must report it to police and centre management and I acted accordingly, returning to the bank after I received a police case number. The bank also said they have to wait for the crime division of Saps to contact them. How long will that take? The banks are the ones that have moved their queues from inside their banking halls to outside. In the interim, Marc from Lifestyle Centre contacted me and said they will call for CCTV footage. As of Friday, July 18, I am still waiting. So I am left R4 000 short at this time of the month, with no camera evidence and no timeframe – unlikely to get my money back. Pissed off to say the least. Capitec Ballito Lifestyle Centre declined to respond. Lifestyle Centre management responds: We regret that Mr Daines has experienced the reported theft of his son's bank card. It is our understanding that Marc, Client Services Manager from our security company, Excellerate, has updated Mr Daines on the camera footage.
