Joaquin Buckley rips Ian Machado Garry's 'trash' UFC Kansas City win over Carlos Prates Welterweight standout has fight booked vs. ex-champ Usman
Joaquin Buckley was not impressed with Ian Machado Garry's performance at UFC on ESPN 66.
Machado Garry (16-1 MMA, 9-1 UFC) survived a late scare to defeat Carlos Prates (21-7 MMA, 4-1 UFC) by unanimous decision in Saturday's main event at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo.
Machado Garry was in firm control throughout the fight, until he was reversed on the ground and ate some hard ground and pound late in Round 5. Prates tried to swarm Machado Garry for the finish, but it was too little, too late.
"I think it was trash," Buckley told Inside Fighting of Machado Garry's in. "I really think Ian Garry had the potential to really put it on Prates, but he tried to play it safe the whole time, tried to keep from getting knocked out. Obviously, we've seen that Prates, in that fifth round, he was trying to get to him, and he turned Ian Garry into a booty boy – my man trying to wrestle, my man trying to hold on for dear life. But I feel like Ian Garry played himself. He really could have had a Performance of the Night-type ending, but you know, too scared."
Machado Garry was asked about Buckley (21-6 MMA, 11-4 UFC) in the post-fight news conference, but dismissed him immediately.
"That man is an absolute p*ssy," Machado Garry said. "I don't care for anything he has to say. Leave him to be him, and let's move on."
Buckley will look to emerge as a title contender when he takes on former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman (20-4 MMA, 15-3 UFC) in the UFC Fight Night 257 main event June 14 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.

Darren Till warns fellow Smesh Bro Khamzat: DDP can ‘give him hell'

Former UFC title challenger Darren Till has unique insight into UFC 319's main event between Dricus Du Plessis vs. Khamzat Chimaev. Back in 2022, Till began training often with Khamzat in Las Vegas, Nevada. The two became fast friends and were soon ripping around the Strip together, driving fast cars and shooting machine guns. Just like that, the 'Smesh Bros' were born, a bromance that has spawned at least one questionable tattoo. On a more professional level, Till cornered Chimaev for his chaotic brawl against Gilbert Burns. Later that year, Till went to war with 'DDP' in December, ultimately getting submitted in the third round after a competitive start (watch here). In the second round, Till actually had some of the best success on the feet of any 'Stillknocks' opponent. It's still a fight the English talent wants to get back, though that's rather unlikely given du Plessis is UFC champion and Till isn't even signed with the promotion currently. Given his experience with both men, Till's insight into the match up is worth noting. Contrary to some, Till expects Du Plessis to give his former training partner hell and make it difficult, but he believes Chimaev and his conditioning will rise to the occasion anyway. 'DDP will be facing the highest level of wrestling, especially in MMA,' Till explained to 'Can Khamzat beat him early on? Most definitely. But can DDP give Khamzat hell? Most definitely. 'I think it's 60-40 in Khamzat's favour, but I just say, when it gets into later rounds, does Khamzat have it [the stamina] to go that? But I think he's training with Arman Tsarukyan, so I think it's going to be a demolition job, well I hope it is. But don't be surprised if DDP gives him problems because he is a phenomenal fighter. I think he's going to drag Khamzat into deep waters, but I think Khamzat is going to be prepared, so I do see Khamzat winning any which way. But you cannot look past DDP.' Currently, Till is more focused on boxing than MMA. He's next scheduled to face former Middleweight champion Luke Rockhold at in upcoming Misfits Boxing 22: 'Ring of Thrones' pay-per-view (PPV) co-main event on DAZN on Sat., Aug. 30, 2025, at AO Arena in Manchester, England.
