Jobless after Supreme Court verdict, Bengal teacher dies amid protests

India Todaya day ago

A sacked school teacher in West Bengal, affected by the fallout of the SSC recruitment scam, has died of a stroke, triggering fresh outrage among the protesters. Prabir Karmakar, 34, a former English teacher, was among those who lost his job after the Supreme Court annulled 25,753 school appointments made through the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) in 2016.Karmakar, who used to teach at Amuipara Udbastu Vidyapith in Murshidabad, passed away late Wednesday night at his residence in Raghunathganj. Protesters said Karmakar was battling kidney-related issues and was in severe mental distress after losing his job. They claimed the anxiety surrounding his medical treatment and uncertain future led to his death.advertisementThe protesting teachers alleged that they have been completely ignored by both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, despite weeks of demonstrations.
The forum Yogyo Shikshak Shikshika Odhikar Mancha, which has been leading demonstrations demanding the reinstatement of qualified teachers, released a statement blaming the state's handling of the issue for Karmakar's death.Amid the rising tensions, the state government on Friday officially published a gazette notification to initiate a fresh round of SSC examination, setting in motion the process for new teacher recruitments."Karmakar was unable to cope with the stress caused by the cancellation of the appointment panel and the ongoing political indecision... the Chief Minister's recent suggestion of re-testing dismissed teachers only intensified the emotional burden, which many were already carrying," a protester, Chinmoy Mondal said.advertisementEarlier in the day, nearly 50 jobless teachers were detained at two locations while they were on their way to the West Bengal state secretariat to stage a protest. The group had assembled to demand the permanent reinstatement of eligible teachers, opposing the state's directive to retake recruitment exams. On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the West Bengal government of destroying the state's education system and betraying thousands. In response, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the Centre of hypocrisy and alleged that corruption was far more rampant in BJP-ruled states.Must Watch

Sanjay Raut: Deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde should resign over Supreme Court strictures on twin tunnel tender

Nashik: Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut called for deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde's resignation from his position as minister for public works (public enterprises), following Supreme Court's strictures on the MMRDA tender process. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now During his visit to Jalgaon on Saturday, Raut said, "If Prime Minister Narendra Modi stands against corrupt practices, he should immediately call for the resignation of Eknath Shinde over the issue." The Supreme Court passed strictures on the tender related to the Thane Ghodbunder Bhayandar twin tunnel. Raut said, "There was a direct appreciation of Rs 3,000crore in the Rs 14,000crore contract for the twin tunnel. L&T challenged the tender in the Supreme Court, which passed strictures." Raut expressed concern about chief minister Devendra Fadnavis's inaction towards state corruption. "After the Supreme Court's strictures, all that Fadnavis said was that he would not tolerate corruption in the bureaucracy. How did Fadnavis fail to see the corruption in this case and fail to take any action against it?" he asked. Addressing NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar's potential alignment with BJP, Raut assured that Pawar's supporters were certain he would not join communal forces. "Pawar has been the torchbearer of Shahu, Phule, and Ambedkar ideologies, and all those who are with Sharad Pawar are confident that he will never join hands with such forces," said Raut. Raut criticised the three ministers from Jalgaon regarding a tribal woman's roadside delivery. "The world knows how the three parties won the elections by manipulating EVMs, electoral rolls, and using administrative force. The govt benches still are unable to believe they won elections. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now They are not grounded and, hence, they fail to understand the needs of the people. We fail to understand why a tribal woman was forced to deliver a baby on the roadside due to a lack of medical facilities despite three cabinet ministers coming from the district," he said. Core committee to decide candidates During a meeting with party functionaries in Jalgaon, Raut announced the formation of a six-member core committee. This committee would analyse the Jalgaon Municipal Corporation situation and compile a list of potential candidates for the upcoming corporation elections.

India does not send dossiers any more, we only give a befitting reply, says Nadda

Bharatiya Janata Party national president J.P. Nadda on Saturday (May 31, 2025) said a safe and strong India is marching ahead under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership after the display of the nation's power during Operation Sindoor. 'The operation has only been halted, while the fight against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism will continue,' Mr. Nadda said. Mr. Nadda was on a day's visit to Jaipur to participate in the celebrations marking the 300th birth anniversary of Ahilyabai Holkar, the former queen of the Malwa kingdom, attend the BJP's 'Tiranga Yatra', and interact with the party workers. He spoke at two functions at the Rajasthan International Centre (RIC) and the Entertainment Paradise Hall, besides addressing the BJP workers at the Sanganer airport. Mr. Nadda said India had made it clear through its surgical strikes [in Pakistan], air strikes and Operation Sindoor that a 'befitting reply' would be given to the attackers by entering their own territory. 'India does not send dossiers [to Pakistan] any more, like the one after the 26/11 attack. Modi ji doesn't complain, he executes what he says,' he said. The new normal The BJP president said the Operation Sindoor, which had demonstrated India's military capability, had handed down a punishment to Pakistan 'beyond its imagination', as promised by Mr. Modi. 'Nine terror hotspots, including the headquarters of the Lashkar-e-Taiba and the Jaish-e-Mohammed, were destroyed in 22 minutes. Eleven air bases [in Pakistan] were also destroyed. This is the new normal,' he said. While affirming that Operation Sindoor would continue as long as Pakistan nurtures terrorism, Mr. Nadda called upon the BJP workers to apprise the people of the party's national security policy, and come forward to defend the nation. Disburses aid At the women's empowerment programme at RIC, Mr. Nadda flagged off 150 Kalika patrolling units of the Rajasthan Police and transferred financial assistance to the beneficiaries of Lakhpati Didi Yojana, Lado Protsahan Yojana, SC/ST pre-matric scholarship scheme, and the distance education scheme. He also launched the Swasth Nari Chetana Abhiyan and the Garbh Pathshala Yojana on the occasion. Mr. Nadda, who holds the Health & Family Welfare portfolio as a Minister in the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre, said the culture of politics had changed in the country after 2014. 'Instead of blame game, every section of society is being empowered now,' he said. 'Modiji has made accountability and responsibility the new definitions of politics. We are willing to give report cards for our work… The double-engine government in Rajasthan is engaged in public service with its new schemes for all sections of society,' Mr. Nadda said. Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, Union Ministers Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Bhagirath Choudhary, former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, and BJP State president Madan Rathore were among those who attended functions along with Mr. Nadda. Mr. Nadda also visited the Raj Bhavan to meet Governor Haribhau Bagade.

‘Serious errors' in SSC evaluation a blot on the government, say student organisations

Leaders of student organisations have slammed the TDP-led coalition government for 'serious errors' in the evaluation of SSC answer sheets, and have accused it of failing the student community. All India Student Federation (AISF) State vice-president Sai Kumar said, in the haste to release the SSC results in record time and gain mileage out of it, the persons handling the evaluation task lost focus and delivered inaccurate results. He said, for the first time in history, as many as 66,363 students applied for re-evaluation and, out of them, over 11,000, who were earlier declared failed, now passed. Their percentage of marks also significantly increased. Stating that the inaccurate results caused immense disappointment to many students, he said there were reports of a few distraught students attempting suicide. Mr. Sai Kumar said it was unfortunate that despite such gross mistake, HRD Minister Nara Lokesh had not made any statement on the issue so far. Student Federation of India State president P. Rammohan Rao and secretary K. Prasanna Kumar accused the government of finding scapegoats in teachers for its own failures. They alleged that the authorities were in a hurry to commence Intermediate classes in favour of the corporate institutions. They said drifting from the usual practice of allocating 15 days' time for completion of evaluation, the government brought pressure on teachers to wind up in a week, leading to the errors. Citing examples, they said a student named Mokshitha secured 21 marks in Social Studies initially, but scored 84 after re-evaluation, another student from Bapatla scored 23 marks in Social Studies, but secured 96 after re-evaluation, and in Eluru, a student wrote a 14-page answer, but only eight pages were evaluated. Stating that the students suffered immensely due to the government's negligence, they demanded that action against teachers should be dropped and the re-evaluation fees collected from students should be refunded.
