NASA's supersonic X-59 jet that could slash NYC-London flight time in half taxis closer to take off

Breakfast in New York, midmorning snack in London.
Taxi tests are underway on a highly anticipated supersonic plane designed to quietly break the sound barrier — and slash flight time between New York and London in half.
The X-59 jet, dubbed the 'son of Concorde,' is one step closer to takeoff after the experimental aircraft taxied on a California runway at low speed using its own power for the first time on July 10, NASA said in a press release.
The ground maneuvers at the US Air Force's Plant 42 in Palmdale mark the final series of trials for the 100-foot-long, 30-foot-wide jet before its maiden voyage, which is slated for sometime this year, according to the space agency.
'Over the coming weeks, the aircraft will gradually increase its speed, leading up to a high-speed taxi test that will take the aircraft just short of the point where it would take off,' officials said.
The high-tech plane, unveiled by NASA and Lockheed Martin last year, is the centerpiece of the space agency's QueSST mission to produce a quieter sonic boom for communities below and revolutionize air travel, potentially cutting transit time down significantly for commercial flights.
It could possibly fly from New York to London flight in three and a half hours, the agency previously said.
The new aircraft's innovative design and shape will cause it to produce a quiet 'thump' sound as it reaches speeds of up to 925 miles per hour, officials said.
Supersonic flights have been banned in the US and other countries for the past half-century due to the thunderous sound generated when planes exceed the speed of sound — 767 miles per hour.
But the X-59's thin, tapered nose is expected to break up shock waves that would cause the high-speed roar on a conventional aircraft, NASA previously boasted.
The latest innovation will succeed the British Airways Concorde, which reached speeds of around 1,350 miles per hour and completed its fastest transatlantic flight in just under three hours on Feb. 7, 1996.
The aircraft, which debuted in 1976, was plagued by costly maintenance and a fatal 2000 crash. It was retired from commercial service in 2003.

Walmart bets on AI super agents to boost e-commerce growth

By Siddharth Cavale NEW YORK (Reuters) -Walmart unveiled plans on Thursday to roll out a suite of AI-powered "super agents" designed to improve the shopping experience for customers and streamline operations. The world's largest retailer said the four agents powered by agentic AI - designed for Walmart shoppers, store employees, suppliers and sellers, and software developers - would soon be the primary way people engage with Walmart. The super agents will be the entry point for every AI interaction these groups have with Walmart, replacing several existing agents and AI tools, along with new ones yet to be built, the company said. Walmart is betting on AI to drive its e-commerce growth, aiming for online sales to account for 50% of its total sales within five years. The company reported annual sales of $648 billion last year. By harnessing AI to streamline the shopping process - from discovering new products and helping with returns to improving delivery speeds - the retailer hopes it can attract more shoppers away from Amazon, which has also introduced a range of AI-powered tools for sellers and shoppers. Walmart's push comes as the short-term financial payoff of AI remains uncertain and concerns over how it might affect jobs across the industry. One of the agents, Sparky, is already available for shoppers on Walmart's app as a Gen-AI powered tool. Currently it assists customers with getting product suggestions for an athletic activity, finding the right ink for their printer, or summarizing product reviews, among other options. In its "super agent" form it will be able to reorder items, plan an event such as a "unicorn-themed party" and through computer vision be able to offer product recipes by just looking at the contents of a shopper's fridge, Hari Vasudev, Walmart's U.S. chief technology officer, said at an event in New York. Agentic AI is the next iteration of generative AI, in that it needs minimal human intervention to make decisions and achieve specific tasks. Walmart is also developing an "Associate" super agent, to be rolled out in the coming months, which will allow workers and corporate staff to do things such as submit an application for parental leave or give store managers immediate information on sales data for a certain category or a product with minimal input. Employees now use separate AI tools to handle those queries, a company spokesperson said. For sellers, suppliers, and advertisers, Walmart is developing a super agent called "Marty" to streamline the onboarding process, manage orders and create ad campaigns. It is also working on a "Developer" super agent, which will be the platform on which all future AI tools will be tested, built, and launched, the company said. "Agents can help automate and simplify pretty much everything that we do," Suresh Kumar, Walmart's chief technology officer said. He added that the company chose to launch these super agents now because "customers are ready, they are using AI in pretty much everything they do." The company declined to say whether the super agents would replace jobs. Dave Glick, senior vice president of enterprise business systems, said it would create new jobs without elaborating further. On Wednesday, Walmart had two AI-related announcements: it hired former Instacart executive Daniel Danker as executive vice president (EVP) for AI acceleration, product and design and created a new EVP, AI role that is yet to be filled. While retail has largely avoided AI-related layoffs, the tech industry has been hit hard, even in a historically strong market and resilient economy. In June, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said generative AI and agents will reduce its total corporate workforce over the next few years. Microsoft has emphasized that AI will boost productivity, but it has laid off thousands of employees, while Google has laid off hundreds of employees. Walmart has not linked any job cuts directly to AI, but it has been downsizing its corporate staff and is modernizing e-commerce fulfillment centers with automation, resulting in some workforce reductions. See the 8-slide pitch deck AI video calling platform Lyra used to raise a $6 million seed round from Y Combinator and 468 Capital

Lyra has raised $6 million to expand its AI-native video meeting platform. The San Francisco and New York-based startup lets customers turn sales calls into real-time whiteboards and keep all their conversations about a project in one place. The product was born when its 23-year-old founder, a marketing consultant, said he realized that go-to-market strategies are repetitive and manual. He thought they could be optimized with AI. "We basically just took a huge bet that everyone is wrong, all the AI note takers are wrong," said Courtne Marland, Lyra's cofounder and CEO. "Instead, you actually need to rebuild the conferencing platform itself because then you can control the entire screen." Once a meeting is scheduled in a virtual calendar, a link for a Lyra meeting is created, just like it is for existing meeting platforms. A team then has a call in which participants can collaborate on a screen share. Lyra's AI generates notes that can be shared after the meeting. The startup, which is now valued at $40 million, was part of Y Combinator's spring 2025 batch. From its November launch, the company's revenue climbed from $20,000 to $700,000 in six weeks. Marland said Lyra is now powering over 200 hours of calls per week and competes with Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams. The $6 million seed round was led by 468 Capital, with participation from Rebel Fund, Y Combinator, and executives from companies like Ramp, Gusto, and Zapier. The round is Lyra's second, following a small pre-seed round in November with contributions from three angel investors. Lyra's product is priced on a pay-per-minute basis. Packages start at $6,000, which gets users about 200,000 minutes. Pricing is customized after this amount, but gets cheaper with more minutes. With the cash injection, Maland wants to invest in the startup's infrastructure, which is under stress because of quick growth. "It's a mission-critical software, which means people don't ever rip it out of their business," he said. "So it needs to work 100%, all the time." Marland said that the company also wants to expand its go-to-market team by hiring engineers, product designers, and a head of growth. The company has a total of 5 employees, including the two cofounders. Check out the pitch deck Lyra used to secure the fresh funding.
